Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The production of jets in association with a Z/?* boson is an example of an important class of processes at hadron colliders, namely vector boson + jet (V + jet) production. Comparisons of measurements of this class of processes with theory predictions constitute an important, fundamental test of the Standard Model of particle physics, and of the theory of QCD in particular. While having a smaller cross section than other V +jet processes, Z/?*(→ e+e-) + jets production, with Z/?* → e+e-/?+?-, has a distinct experimental signature allowing for measurements characterized by low backgrounds and a direct, precise measurement of the properties of the decay products of the Z/?* boson. In this thesis, several new measurements of the properties of jets produced in association with a Z/?* boson in p$ar{p}$ collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV are presented. The cross section for Z/?*(→ e+e-) + N jet production (N ≤ 3) is measured, differential in the transverse momentum of the Nth jet in the event, normalized to the inclusive Z/?* cross section. Also, the cross section for Z/?*(→e+e-) + N jets (N ≥ 1) is measured, differential in the difference in azimuthal angle between the di-electron system and any jet in the event, normalized to unity. The data used in the measurements were collected by the D0 experiment located at the Tevatron Collider of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.04 fb-1. The measured jet transverse momentum spectra are compared with the predictions of perturbative calculations at the next-to-leading order in the strong coupling constant. Given the low sensitivity of the calculations to model parameters, these comparisons represent a stringent test of perturbative QCD. One of the main goals currently being pursued in particle physics is the discovery of the only particle predicted by the Standard Model which has so far no been detected experimentally, namely the Higgs boson. It is assumed that the ATLAS and CMS experiments located at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), a proton-proton collider at √s = 14 TeV, will be able to detect the Higgs boson, or rule out its existence, within the next few years. The collisions delivered by the LHC will also be used to perform a long range of searches for other new particles, for instance particles predicted by models based on the principle of supersymmetry. The associated production of vector bosons with jets has relatively large production rates at the LHC and can produce a long list of different final states which can include charged leptons, missing transverse energy, as well as light- and heavy-flavour jets. This makes V + jet production a major source of background events to many searches for new particles. Most techniques used for estimating the expected number of background events to searches rely on passing the stable final-state particles of simulated hadron collisions generated using a so-called event generator code, through a simulation of the experimental detector system. The development of event generators which are capable of reliably predicting the properties of jets produced in association with a core process, e.g. the production of a vector boson, has been the subject of a large amount of research activity during the last ten years. These efforts have led to the appearance of the CKKW and MLM algorithms which are implemented in several event generators, among them SHERPA and ALPGEN + PYTHIA. The large data sample collected by the D0 experiment during Run II offers an excellent opportunity for validating these new event generators against experimental measurements of V + jet production. As argued above, the Z/?*(→ e+e-) + jets process offers the combination of a clean experimental signature and large production rates, making it the process of choice for these studies.

Book Measurement of Jet Production in Association with a W Boson at Atlas

Download or read book Measurement of Jet Production in Association with a W Boson at Atlas written by Imai Jen-La Plante and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the associated production of jets with a W boson, identified by the decay W & rarr; enu. The measurement uses the full data sample collected by the ATLAS experiment during the inaugural year of proton-proton collisions with center-of-mass energy s = 7 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. Cross sections are presented for W & rarr; enu events with each jet multiplicity from zero through four or more jets and as a function of jet transverse momenta, the scalar sum of jet and lepton transverse momenta, the invariant mass of jets, and angular distributions. The results represent the first experimental test of perturbative QCD predictions with next-to-leading order precision for W + 4 jets.

Book Anomaly Collider Physics And The Quest For New Phenomena At Fermilab

Download or read book Anomaly Collider Physics And The Quest For New Phenomena At Fermilab written by Tommaso Dorigo and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2016-09-26 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Dorigo provides an engaging and insightful perspective on the pursuit of physics discoveries at CDF … Dorigo’s book is thus almost certainly going to be an important source for anyone interested in the history of CDF … It is a personal yet highly informative story of discovery and almost-discovery from the perspective of someone who saw the events firsthand.'Physics TodayFrom the mid-1980s, an international collaboration of 600 physicists embarked on the investigation of subnuclear physics at the high-energy frontier. As well as discovering the top quark, the heaviest elementary particle ever observed, the physicists analyzed their data to seek signals of new physics which could revolutionize our understanding of nature.Anomaly! tells the story of that quest, and focuses specifically on the finding of several unexplained effects which were unearthed in the process. These anomalies proved highly controversial within the large team: to some collaborators they called for immediate publication, while to others their divulgation threatened to jeopardize the reputation of the experiment.Written in a confidential, narrative style, this book looks at the sociology of a large scientific collaboration, providing insight in the relationships between top physicists at the turn of the millennium. The stories offer an insider's view of the life cycle of the 'failed' discoveries that unavoidably accompany even the greatest endeavors in modern particle physics.

Book Measurements of the Associated Production of a Z Boson and B Jets in Pp Collisions at sqrt s

Download or read book Measurements of the Associated Production of a Z Boson and B Jets in Pp Collisions at sqrt s written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements of the associated production of a Z boson with at least one jet originating from a b quark in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV are presented. Differential cross sections are measured with data collected by the CMS experiment corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.8 inverse femtobarns. Z bosons are reconstructed through their decays to electrons and muons. Cross sections are measured as a function of observables characterizing the kinematics of the b jet and the Z boson. Ratios of differential cross sections for the associated production with at least one b jet to the associated production with any jet are also presented. The production of a Z boson with two b jets is investigated, and differential cross sections are measured for the dijet system. Results are compared to theoretical predictions, testing two different flavour schemes for the choice of initial-state partons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is focused on an inclusive search of the t{bar t} --> E{sub T} + jets decay channel by means of neural network tools in proton antiproton collisions at (square root)s = 1.96 TeV recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). At the Tevatron p{bar p} collider top quarks are mainly produced in pairs through quark-antiquark annihilation and gluon-gluon fusion processes; in the Standard Model description, the top quark then decays to a W boson and a b quark almost 100% of the times, so that its decay signatures are classified according to the W decay modes. When only one W decays leptonically, the t{bar t} event typically contains a charged lepton, missing transverse energy due to the presence of a neutrino escaping from the detector, and four high transverse momentum jets, two of which originate from b quarks. In this thesis we describe a t{bar t} production cross section measurement which uses data collected by a 'multijet' trigger, and selects this kind of top decays by requiring a high-P{sub T} neutrino signature and by using an optimized neural network to discriminate top quark pair production from backgrounds. In Chapter 1, a brief review of the Standard Model of particle physics will be discussed, focusing on top quark properties and experimental signatures. In Chapter 2 will be presented an overview of the Tevatron accelerator chain that provides p{bar p} collisions at the center-of-mass energy of (square root)s = 1.96 TeV, and proton and antiproton beams production procedure will be discussed. The CDF detector and its components and subsystems used for the study of p{bar p} collisions provided by the Tevatron will be described in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 will detail the reconstruction procedures used in CDF to detect physical objects exploiting the features of the different detector subsystems. Chapter 5 will provide an overview of the main concepts regarding Artificial Neural Networks, one of the most important tools we will use in the analysis. Chapter 6 will be devoted to the description of the main characteristics of the t{bar t} --> E{sub T} + jets decay channel used to train our neural network to discriminate the top pair production from background processes. We will discuss the event selection method and the technique used for background prediction, that will rely on b-jets identification rate parameterization. Finally, Chapter 7 will provide a description of the final data sample and a detailed discussion of the systematic uncertainties before determining the cross section measurement by means of a likelihood maximization.

This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This thesis presents the measurement of the production cross sections of jets in association with a Z boson in proton-proton collisions at √s = 8 TeV with an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb−1 recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Inclusive and differential Z/[gamma]∗(→ e+e−)+jets cross sections are measured for jets with a transversemomentum pT(jet) > 30 GeV and rapidity |y(jet)| 4.4. Z boson candidates are identified by their decay into electron pairs. In order to stringently probe the modelling of Z/[gamma]∗+jets production by Monte Carlo generators in regions of high-pT phase space typical for Higgs boson decay and searches for new physics, events with high-pT final states are investigated. High-pT final states are defined as events with either pT(Z) 300 GeV or pT(leading jet) > 300 GeV. A set of four observables, sensitive to the topology of the event, are measured for the standard event selection as well as in the regions of high-pT phase space. The results from data are unfolded to particle level and compared to calculations of the matrix element from Monte Carlo generators Alpgen+Pythia and Sherpa interfaced to a parton shower. The results show that Sherpa tends to model Z/[gamma]∗+jets production in high-pT regions of phase space much better than Alpgen+Pythia." --

This book was released on 2014 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents the measurement of the rapidity distributions in events containing a Z boson and a jet in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of approximately 5 fb-11, recorded by the CMS detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).
