Book Measurement of Quarkonium Polarization to Probe QCD at the LHC

Download or read book Measurement of Quarkonium Polarization to Probe QCD at the LHC written by Valentin Knünz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-07 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis discusses in detail the measurement of the polarizations of all S-wave vector quarkonium states in LHC proton-proton collisions with the CMS detector. Heavy quarkonium states constitute an ideal laboratory to study non-perturbative effects of quantum chromodynamics and to understand how quarks bind into hadrons. The experimental results are interpreted through an original phenomenological approach, which leads to a coherent picture of quarkonium production cross sections and polarizations within a simple model, dominated by one single color-octet production mechanism. These findings provide new insights into the dynamics of heavy quarkonium production at the LHC, an important step towards a satisfactory understanding of hadron formation within the standard model of particle physics.

This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors report on a measurement of the longitudinal polarization fraction in the decay B[sup 0][yields] J/[psi]K*[sup 0] using data collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. B[sup 0] mesons are reconstructed through the decay chain B[sup 0][yields] J/[psi] K*[sup 0], J/[psi][yields][mu][sup+][mu][sup[minus]], K*[sup 0][yields] K[sup+][pi][sup[minus]]. A sample of 65[+-] 10 events is used to obtain the result[Lambda][sub L]/[Lambda]= 0.65[+-] 0.10 (stat)[+-] 0.04 (sys). The first measurement of[Lambda][sub L]/[Lambda] in the decay B[sub s][sup 0][yields] J/[psi][phi] is also presented.

Book A Measurement of the Polarization of J Psi Mesons Produced in High energy Proton antiproton Collisions

Download or read book A Measurement of the Polarization of J Psi Mesons Produced in High energy Proton antiproton Collisions written by Robert J. Cropp and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation presents an analysis of the polarization of ' J'/ y mesons produced in 'pp¢' collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV. The collisions were produced by the Fermilab Tevatron collider, the world's highest energy particle accelerator. The data were recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab during Run 1 of the Tevatron in 1992-1995. The 'J'/ y meson consists of a charm quark and its antiquark, and is the best-known type of quarkonium, the bound state of a heavy quark-antiquark pair. The measurement of the production polarization of 'J'/ y mesons and other quarkonia provides a test of quarkonium production models. The study of quarkonium production is important for understanding the strong nuclear force between quarks. The strong force is one of the four known fundamental forces, being responsible for binding quarks into hadrons and holding atomic nuclei together. The polarization of centrally produced 'J'/ y mesons has been measured over the transverse momentum range 4-20 GeV/'c', using an analysis of the angular distribution of their decays to [mu]+[mu]-. Decay length measurements made by CDF's silicon vertex detector allowed the promptly produced ' J'/ y mesons to be separated from those produced in ' B'-hadron decays. The prompt and 'B'-decay polarization parameters, Ã'P' and Ã' B', have both been measured. The measured value of Ã' P' is positive at intermediate 'PT', but is consistent with zero above 12 GeV/'c', in apparent disagreement with predictions of the NRQCD factorization formalism.

Book Particle Polarization in High Energy Physics

Download or read book Particle Polarization in High Energy Physics written by Pietro Faccioli and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-17 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open-access book addresses the following questions: how does the polarization of a particle, i.e., the angular momentum state in which it is produced, manifest itself in nature? What are the concepts and tools needed to perform rigorous measurements providing complete and unambiguous physical information? Polarization measurements are important because they reflect the nature and coupling properties of a particle and provide unique insights into the underlying fundamental interactions, playing a central role in the study and understanding of the mechanisms of particle production. Besides gradually reviewing many fundamental notions, the book presents several case studies relevant to physics analyses underway at the LHC, including the lepton-antilepton decays of vector states (Drell–Yan, Z and W bosons, quarkonia, etc.). The book also offers a detailed discussion of cascade decays, where the vector particle is a daughter of another particle, as well as a survey of typical angular distributions of particles of any integer or half-integer spin. With a visual approach to the presentation of the concepts and frequent use of pedagogical examples, taken from real measurements, gedankenexperiments, or detailed simulations, the book focuses on aspects of polarization measurements that are sometimes underestimated or left unexplored in experimental analyses, such as the importance of the choice of the reference frame, the existence of frame-independent relations, and the shapes of the physically allowed parameter domains. Several examples are provided of pitfalls introduced when the intrinsic multidimensionality of the problem is neglected in exchange for a simplified analysis. Targeting an audience of graduate students, post-docs, and other researchers involved in analyses of LHC data, this book helps to establish a solid bridge between high precision data, existing or soon to be collected, and accurate measurements, including high-sensitivity tests of the Standard Model.
