Book Neutrino nucleus Neutral Current Elastic Interactions Measurement in MiniBooNE

Download or read book Neutrino nucleus Neutral Current Elastic Interactions Measurement in MiniBooNE written by Denis Perevalov and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The MiniBooNE experiment at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) was designed to search for electron to muon neutrino oscillations at Delta m^2~1 eV^2 using an intense neutrino flux with an average energy of about 700 MeV. From 2002 to 2009 MiniBooNE has accumulated more than 1.0x10^{21} protons on target (POT) in both neutrino and antineutrino modes. MiniBooNE provides a perfect platform for detailed measurements of exclusive and semiinclusive neutrino cross-sections, for which MiniBooNE has the largest samples of events up to date, such as neutral current elastic (NCE), neutral current pi^0, charged current quasi-elastic (CCQE), charged current pi^+, and other channels. These measured cross-sections, in turn, allow to improve the knowledge of nucleon structure. This thesis is devoted to the study of NCE interactions. Neutrino-nucleus neutral current elastic scattering accounts for about 18% of all neutrino interactions in MiniBooNE. Using a high-statistics, high purity sample of NCE interactions in MiniBooNE, the flux-averaged NCE differential cross-section has been measured and is being reported here. Further study of the NCE cross-section allowed for probing the structure of nuclei. The main interest in the NCE cross-section is that it may be sensitive to the strange quark contribution to the nucleon spin, $Delta s$, this however requires a separation of NCE proton from NCE neutron events, which in general is a challenging task. MiniBooNE uses a Cherenkov detector, which imposes restrictions on the measured nucleon kinematic variables, mainly due to the impossibility to reconstruct the nucleon direction below the Cherenkov threshold. However, at kinetic energies above this threshold MiniBooNE is able to identify NCE proton events that do not experience final state interactions. These events were used for the $Delta s$ measurement. In this thesis MiniBooNE reports the NCE (n+p) cross-section, the measurement of the axial mass, $M_A$, and the $Delta s$ parameter from the NCE data.

Book Measurement of the Neutrino Neutral Current Elastic Differential Cross Section

Download or read book Measurement of the Neutrino Neutral Current Elastic Differential Cross Section written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We report a measurement of the flux-averaged neutral-current elastic differential cross section for neutrinos scattering on mineral oil (CH2) as a function of four-momentum transferred squared, Q2. It is obtained by measuring the kinematics of recoiling nucleons with kinetic energy greater than 50 MeV which are readily detected in MiniBooNE. This differential cross-section distribution is fit with fixed nucleon form factors apart from an axial mass, M{sub A}, that provides a best fit for M{sub A} = 1.39 ± 0.11 GeV. Using the data from the charged-current neutrino interaction sample, a ratio of neutral-current to charged-current quasi-elastic cross sections as a function of Q2 has been measured. Additionally, single protons with kinetic energies above 350 MeV can be distinguished from neutrons and multiple nucleon events. Using this marker, the strange quark contribution to the neutral-current axial vector form factor at Q2 = 0, [Delta]s, is found to be [Delta]s = 0.08± 0.26.

Book First Measurement of the Muon Anti Neutrino Charged Current Quasielastic Double Differential Cross Section

Download or read book First Measurement of the Muon Anti Neutrino Charged Current Quasielastic Double Differential Cross Section written by Joseph Grange and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-09-23 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a major step forward in experimentally understanding the behavior of muon neutrinos and antineutrinos. Apart from providing the world’s first measurement of these interactions in a mostly unexplored energy region, the data presented advances the neutrino community’s preparedness to search for an asymmetry between matter and anti-matter that may very well provide the physical mechanism for the existence of our universe. The details of these measurements are preceded by brief summaries of the history of the neutrino, the phenomenon of neutrino oscillations, and a description of their interactions. Also provided are details of the experimental setup for the measurements and the muon antineutrino cross-section measurement which motivates the need for dedicated in situ background constraints. The world’s first measurement of the neutrino component of an antineutrino beam using a non-magnetized detector, as well as other crucial background constraints, are also presented in the book. By exploiting correlated systematic uncertainties, combined measurements of the muon neutrino and antineutrino cross sections described in the book maximize the precision of the extracted information from both results.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MiniBooNE reports the first absolute cross sections for neutral current single [pi]° production on CH2 induced by neutrino and antineutrino interactions measured from the largest sets of NC [pi]° events collected to date. The principal result consists of differential cross sections measured as functions of [pi]° momentum and [pi]° angle averaged over the neutrino flux at MiniBooNE. We find total cross sections of (4.76 ± 0.05{sub stat} ± 0.40{sub sys}) x 10−4° cm2/nucleon at a mean energy of E{sub [nu]} = 808 MeV and (1.48 ± 0.05{sub stat} ± 0.14{sub sys}) x 10−4° cm2/nucleon at a mean energy of E{sub {nu}} = 664 MeV for {nu}{sub {mu}} and {bar {nu}}{sub {mu}} induced production, respectively. In addition, we have included measurements of the neutrino and antineutrino total cross sections for incoherent exclusive NC 1[pi]° production corrected for the effects of final state interactions to compare to prior results.

This book was released on 2011 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elucidating the nature of neutrino oscillation continues to be a goal in the vanguard of the efforts of physics experiment. As neutrino oscillation searches seek an increasingly elusive signal, a thorough understanding of the possible backgrounds becomes ever more important. Measurements of neutrino-nucleus interaction cross sections are key to this understanding. Searches for ?? → ?e oscillation - a channel that may yield insight into the vanishingly small mixing parameter ?13, CP violation, and the neutrino mass hierarchy - are particularly susceptible to contamination from neutral current single ?0 (NC 1?0) production. Unfortunately, the available data concerning NC 1?0 production are limited in scope and statistics. Without satisfactory constraints, theoretical models of NC 1?0 production yield substantially differing predictions in the critical E? ̃1 GeV regime. Additional investigation of this interaction can ameliorate the current deficiencies. The Mini Booster Neutrino Experiment (MiniBooNE) is a short-baseline neutrino oscillation search operating at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab). While the oscillation search is the principal charge of the MiniBooNE collaboration, the extensive data ( ̃106 neutrino events) offer a rich resource with which to conduct neutrino cross section measurements. This work concerns the measurement of both neutrino and antineutrino NC 1?0 production cross sections at MiniBooNE. The size of the event samples used in the analysis exceeds that of all other similar experiments combined by an order of magnitude. We present the first measurements of the absolute NC 1?0 cross section as well as the first differential cross sections in both neutrino and antineutrino mode. Specifically, we measure single differential cross sections with respect to pion momentum and pion angle. We find the flux-averaged, total cross sections for NC 1?0 production on CH2 to be (4.76 ± 0.05stat ± 0.76sys) x 10-40 cm2/nucleon at Esub?/sub” = 808 MeV for neutrino induced production and (1.48 ± 0.05substat/sub ± 0.23subsys/sub) x 10sup-40/sup cmsup2

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The physics of neutrinos--uncharged elementary particles that are key to helping us better understand the nature of our universe--is one of the most exciting frontiers of modern science. This book provides a comprehensive overview of neutrino physics today and explores promising new avenues of inquiry that could lead to future breakthroughs. The Physics of Neutrinos begins with a concise history of the field and a tutorial on the fundamental properties of neutrinos, and goes on to discuss how the three neutrino types interchange identities as they propagate from their sources to detectors. The book shows how studies of neutrinos produced by such phenomena as cosmic rays in the atmosphere and nuclear reactions in the solar interior provide striking evidence that neutrinos have mass, and it traces our astounding progress in deciphering the baffling experimental findings involving neutrinos. The discovery of neutrino mass offers the first indication of a new kind of physics that goes beyond the Standard Model of elementary particles, and this book considers the unanticipated patterns in the masses and mixings of neutrinos in the framework of proposed new theoretical models. The Physics of Neutrinos maps out the ambitious future facilities and experiments that will advance our knowledge of neutrinos, and explains why the way forward in solving the outstanding questions in neutrino science will require the collective efforts of particle physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics, and cosmology.

Book Measurement of Neutrino Induced Charged Current Neutral Pion Production Cross Section at SciBooNE

Download or read book Measurement of Neutrino Induced Charged Current Neutral Pion Production Cross Section at SciBooNE written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SciBooNE is a neutrino scattering experiment located in the Booster Neutrino Beam at Fermilab. It collected data from June 2007 to August 2008 to accurately measure muon neutrino and anti-neutrino cross sections on carbon around 1 GeV neutrino energy. In this thesis we present the results on the measurement of the muon neutrino cross section resulting in a [mu]- plus a single [pi]0 final state (CC- [pi]0 channel). The present work will show the steps taken to achieve this result: from the reconstruction improvements to the background extraction. The flux-averaged CC - [pi]0 production cross section measurement obtained in this thesis [sigma]CC- [pi]0 [Phi] = (5.6 ± 1.9fit ± 0.7beam ± 0.5int - 0.7det) × 10-40 cm2/N at an average energy of 0.89 GeV is found to agree well both with the expectation from the Monte Ca.

Book Testing Explanations of Short Baseline Neutrino Anomalies

Download or read book Testing Explanations of Short Baseline Neutrino Anomalies written by Nicolò Foppiani and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-11-02 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis, encompassing both theory to experiment, guides the reader in a pedagogical way through the author’s attempts to resolve the mystery of the so-called MiniBooNE anomaly, where unexpected neutrino oscillations were reported, potentially explainable by the existence of light sterile neutrinos, but in contradiction with several null results. Within this context, this thesis reports one of the first analyses searching for an excess of electrons in the MicroBooNE experiment finding no excess of events and narrowing down the possible explanations for the anomaly. Additionally, this thesis explores non-minimal heavy neutral leptons as potential explanations for the MiniBooNE excess. To search for evidence for this particle, the author performs an analysis using data from the T2K experiment, which searched for pairs of electrons using a gas argon time projection. This thesis provides a comprehensive explanation of the MiniBooNE anomaly and test of its possibile explanation with liquid and gas time projection chambers.

Book Neutrino Nucleus Interactions in the Few Gev Region

Download or read book Neutrino Nucleus Interactions in the Few Gev Region written by Geralyn P. Zeller and published by American Institute of Physics. This book was released on 2008-01-15 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NuInt07, the fifth in a series of international workshops, was held at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, IL. It was the successful continuation of a series of workshops focused solely on the understanding and measurement of low energy neutrino-nucleus interactions. Neutrino cross sections in the few-GeV energy range are an important ingredient for neutrino oscillation experiments as well as being interesting in their own right. Such measurements and their accompanying theoretical calculations had not been updated for decades. The goal of this workshop series has been to remedy this situation by providing an environment where both experimentalists and theorists in nuclear and high energy physics can come together to review and discuss recent progress in neutrino-nucleus measurements and calculations.
