Book Precision Measurement of the Boron to Carbon Ratio in Cosmic Rays with AMS 02

Download or read book Precision Measurement of the Boron to Carbon Ratio in Cosmic Rays with AMS 02 written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A precision measurement of the Boron to Carbon ratio in cosmic rays is carried out in the range 1 GeV/n to 670 GeV/n using the first 30 months of flight data of AMS-02 located on the International Space Station. Above 20 GeV/n, it is the first accurate measurement. About 5 million clean Boron and Carbon nuclei are identified. The experimental and analysis challenges in achieving a high precision measurement are addressed. Boron is exclusively produced as a secondary particle by spallation from primary elements like Carbon in collisions with interstellar medium. The unprecedented precision and energy range of this measurement deepen the knowledge of cosmic ray propagation. Using this measurement, the diffusion coefficient in Gal-Prop model is determined to be (6.05 ± 0.05)10^28 cm2/s, and the Alfven velocity is (33.9 ± 1.0) km/s. This makes the prediction of secondary anti-proton background in dark matter search one order of magnitude more accurate.

Book A Measurement of the Energy Spectra of Cosmic Rays from 20 to 1000 Gev Per Amu

Download or read book A Measurement of the Energy Spectra of Cosmic Rays from 20 to 1000 Gev Per Amu written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-08-09 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the report period the BUGS-4 instrument was completed, and the maiden voyage took place on 29 September from Fort Sumner, New Mexico. The successful flight of a large spherical drift chamber is a unique first for the sub-orbital balloon program. Unfortunately the instrument was consumed by fire after striking a power line during landing. However, while at float altitude, circa 24 hours of data were telemetered. The pre-flight preparations, and flight operations are described. Gregory, John C. and Smith, Arthur Unspecified Center NASA-CR-195246, NAS 1.26:195246 NAGW-2023...

Book Measuring the Cosmic ray Energy Spectrum Composition and Anisotropy at PeV Scales Using the IceCube Observatory

This book was released on 2019 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the discovery of cosmic rays over one hundred years ago, many experiments have studied their properties. However, a definitive answer to the questions of where cosmic rays originate and how they are produced is still not known. Over the last several decades, a much more detailed understanding of high energy cosmic rays has begun to materialize. In particular, the cosmic-ray energy spectrum, with its transitions at 3 PeV (the "knee") and 3 EeV (the "ankle"), has been extensively investigated. Based on magnetic confinement arguments, it's generally believed that the energy range between the knee and ankle is where the transition from Galactic to extragalactic sources of cosmic rays. The ability to distinguish between high energy cosmic rays of different composition and study the relative mass abundances of cosmic rays in this transition region can provide invaluable insight in answering the open questions surrounding the origins of cosmic rays. This work focuses on measuring the composition-resolved cosmic-ray energy spectrum at and above the all-particle knee using one year of data collected by the IceCube Observatory. Sepcifically, we focus on making a two mass group spectrum measurement from 10^6.4 GeV to 10^7.8 GeV. The first mass group, referred to as the "light" mass group, is modeled using proton and helium cosmic rays, while the second, "heavy" mass group, is modeled using oxygen and iron cosmic rays. We observe a clear softening of the light spectrum near 3 PeV, while the energy spectrum for the heavy mass group follows a power-law like structure with a spectral index of ~2.7 throughout the entire energy range considered. The observed transition from a primarily light to a heavy-dominant spectrum takes place near 10^7.1 GeV. This feature is characteristic of a potential rigidity-dependent cutoff, or Peters cycle. The change in relative mass abundance could also indicate a possible transition in the source population of cosmic rays. In addition, a study to determine whether or not the light, heavy, or all-particle cosmic-ray energy spectra vary as a function of arrival direction is also presented. This marks the first time an analysis of this kind has been conducted using the IceCube Observatory. No statistically significant spectrum deviations were observed. The results from this analysis can be used to set a limit on the range of possible spectral deviations.

Book Measuring the Cosmic ray Proton Energy Spectrum with the Fermi Large Area Telescope

Download or read book Measuring the Cosmic ray Proton Energy Spectrum with the Fermi Large Area Telescope written by Patrick Douglas Smith and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope was launched in June 2008 and the onboard Large Area Telescope (LAT) has been collecting data since August of that same year. The LAT is currently being used to study a wide range of science topics in high-energy astrophysics, one of which is the study of high-energy cosmic rays. The LAT has recently demonstrated its ability to measure cosmic-ray electrons, and the Fermi LAT Collaboration has published a measurement of the high-energy cosmic-ray electron spectrum in the 20 GeV to 1 TeV energy range. Further cosmic-ray studies with the LAT involve measuring the cosmic-ray proton energy spectrum. A method for performing this measurement of proton energy spectrum will be presented. The event selections will be described, and the instrument response for protons will be characterized. An emphasis will be on unfolding the measured proton energy to overcome the instrument's poor energy resolution, and this procedure will be detailed. Finally the spectrum will be calculated and systematic errors will be estimated.

Download or read book An Instrument to Measure the Charge and Energy Spectrum 20 1000 GeV a of the Cosmic Ray Species Oxygen to Iron written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-08-16 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BUGS-4 (Bristol University Gas Scintillator-4) made its maiden engineering flight from Fort Summer (NM) on the 29th of September 1993. The instrument was consumed by fire after striking a power line during landing following 24 hours at float. The analysis of the telemetered data from this sophisticated instrument is a demanding task. Early analysis was compromised by electronic artifacts. Unravelling these problems has been difficult and time consuming, especially as the flight hardware was burned beyond salvage, but is is an essential preliminary to analysis. During this report period we have concentrated on a small sub-set of data (the first 30,000 events; 90 minutes at float), and developed software algorithms to correct systematic errors. Using these corrected events we have begun to develop the analysis algorithms. Although the analysis is preliminary, and restricted to the first 30,000 events, the results are encouraging, and suggest the design concepts are well matched to this application. Further work will refine the analysis, and allow quantitative evaluation of the concepts employed in BUGS-4 for applicability to future instruments. We believe this work will justify fabrication of a new instrument employing techniques deployed on BUGS-4. Gregory, J. C. and Smith, A. E.
