Measurement of the cluster lensing effect offers the exciting possibility of constraining the masses of galaxy clusters using CMB data alone. Improved constraints on cluster masses are in turn essential to the use of clusters as cosmological probes: uncertainties in cluster masses are currently the dominant systematic affecting cluster abundance constraints on cosmology. To date, however, the CMB cluster lensing signal remains undetected because of its small magnitude and angular size. In this thesis, we develop a maximum likelihood approach to extracting the signal from CMB temperature data. We validate the technique by applying it to mock data designed to replicate as closely as possible real data from the South Pole Telescope's (SPT) Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) survey: the effects of the SPT beam, transfer function, instrumental noise and cluster selection are incorporated. We consider the effects of foreground emission on the analysis and show that uncertainty in amount of foreground lensing results in a small systematic error on the lensing constraints. Additionally, we show that if unaccounted for, the SZ effect leads to unacceptably large biases on the lensing constraints and develop an approach for removing SZ contamination. The results of the mock analysis presented here suggest that a 4 sigma first detection of the cluster lensing effect can be achieved with current SPT-SZ data.

With the increased sensitivity and frequency coverage, the recent CMB experiments have allowed us to investigate subtle secondary e ects such as gravitational lensing. In this thesis, the theoret- ical background of CMB lensing is described, and the methods used to reconstruct a map of the gravitational lensing potential is outlined. The methodology is applied to temperature data ob- tained by the South Pole Telescope and Planck, and the resulting lensing map is presented. We perform numerous tests to verify that the lensing map is not dominated by systematic errors. This lensing map will be correlated with other probes of large-scale stucture, namely galaxy density and galaxy weak lensing. We simulate each of these data sets using Flask, a code that produces maps of correlated elds. Using the suite of simulation realizations, we calculate the correlations between the probes and estimate the covariance. The two-point correlation measure- ments for the individual probes are then combined to constrain cosmology. Finally we discuss the future landscape of multi-probe cosmological analyses." --

Book excerpt: We measure the cross-correlation between weak lensing of galaxy images and of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). The effects of gravitational lensing on different sources will be correlated if the lensing is caused by the same mass fluctuations. We use galaxy shape measurements from 139 deg$^{2}$ of the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Science Verification data and overlapping CMB lensing from the South Pole Telescope (SPT) and Planck. The DES source galaxies have a median redshift of $z_{\rm med} {\sim} 0.7$, while the CMB lensing kernel is broad and peaks at $z{\sim}2$. The resulting cross-correlation is maximally sensitive to mass fluctuations at $z{\sim}0.44$. Assuming the Planck 2015 best-fit cosmology, the amplitude of the DES$\times$SPT cross-power is found to be $A = 0.88 \pm 0.30$ and that from DES$\times$Planck to be $A = 0.86 \pm 0.39$, where $A=1$ corresponds to the theoretical prediction. These are consistent with the expected signal and correspond to significances of $2.9 \sigma$ and $2.2 \sigma$ respectively. We demonstrate that our results are robust to a number of important systematic effects including the shear measurement method, estimator choice, photometric redshift uncertainty and CMB lensing systematics. Significant intrinsic alignment of galaxy shapes would increase the cross-correlation signal inferred from the data; we calculate a value of $A = 1.08 \pm 0.36$ for DES$\times$SPT when we correct the observations with a simple IA model. With three measurements of this cross-correlation now existing in the literature, there is not yet reliable evidence for any deviation from the expected LCDM level of cross-correlation, given the size of the statistical uncertainties and the significant impact of systematic errors, particularly IAs. We provide forecasts for the expected signal-to-noise of the combination of the five-year DES survey and SPT-3G.

Book excerpt: We present maps of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization at 90 and 150 GHz measured with SPTpol and the first EE and TE CMB power spectrum measurements from SPTpol. We also describe the SPTpol instrument in detail. We discuss the development of the SPTpol camera including the cryogenic design and the transition edge sensor (TES) detectors developed at NIST and Argonne National Laboratory. The goals of the SPTpol project are to exploit the high resolution of the telescope (1 arcminute beam) and the high sensitivity afforded by the 1536 detector camera to measure the E-mode power spectrum of the CMB, characterize the B-mode polarization induced by the gravitational lensing of the primordial E-mode CMB polarization, and to detector set an upper limit on the level of the B-mode polarization from inflationary gravitational waves. This thesis is a first step toward accomplishing these goals. Measuring the E-mode power spectrum will allow us to improve constraints on parameters of the current cosmological models that are sensitive to the damping tail of the CMB.

Book excerpt: Precise measurement of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation holds the key to a surprising quantity of knowledge about cosmology and the early universe. Measurement of the power spectrum of the CMB yields information about inflation and gravitational waves in the early universe, the mass of the neutrino, and the number of effective neutrino species. As CMB photons pass through our universe, the interaction they have with its contents yield even more information. Scattering of the CMB photons off of the electrons in galaxy clusters can be used to extract the movement of those galaxy clusters, and gravitational lensing of the CMB photons tells the story of the evolution of massive structures in our universe. Extracting this information requires an extreme level of precision and care in the detection of these photons. This dissertation covers a number of subjects related to measuring CMB photons with telescopes in Chile. I first discuss the superconducting transition edge sensors used on some of these telescopes, and the testing and characterization of these sensors for the Simons Observatory. It is necessary to multiplex the detector signals to reduce thermal load on the cryostat cold stages, so I then discuss testing and characterization strategies for superconducting multiplexers. This begins with characterization of the time domain multiplexing chips used on Advanced ACTPol, and leads into characterization of microwave multiplexing chips like those that will be used in the Simons Observatory. Next, I present methods for designing and optimizing wide area CMB survey strategies from Chile, including the strategies that are used in Advanced ACTPol and the strategies that will be used in the Simons Observatory. I then describe recent results from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope that this work has contributed to. I conclude by summarizing the improvements we will see in measurements of the CMB from new observatories in the coming years.
