Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Homoeopathic Materia Medica: Arranged Systematically and Practically A most interesting portion of the work are the contributions from Old-school literature. A history of the empirical use of the drug is given in every case, and it will be uniformly found, that, wherever a drug had the reputation of being a Specific in a certain disease, and really did effect, striking, rapid and permanent cures, such a result was invariably attributable to the homoeopathicity of the drug action with the nature of the malady. Book The Organic Materia Medica of the British Pharmacopoeia

Download or read book The Organic Materia Medica of the British Pharmacopoeia written by William Southall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Organic Materia Medica of the British Pharmacopoeia: Systematically Arranged, Together With Brief Notices of the Remedies Contained in the Indian and United States Pharmacopoeias This compilation is intended as a companion and key to the Materia Medica cabinets published by the firm of southall, son, and dymond. It contains brief descriptions of all the vegetable and animal substances contained in the British Pharmacopoeia of 1867, together with those since added in the appendix of 1874. For the convenience of students 'all the plants, which are in part or wholly employed, are arranged botanically. Descriptions are given of the more important natural orders, and of the classes and divisions to which they belong. These descriptions are worded as simply as possible consistently with clearness and the broader characteristics that would be best understood by the ordinary student are selected in preference to minuter distinctions. In addition to the plants contained in the British Pharmacopoeia, brief notices are given of the plants in the two other Pharmacopoeias in the English tongue, viz., the Indian Pharmacopoeia and that of the United States, both of which contain remedies that come increasingly under the notice of English Pharmacists. These notes are in small type, so that they maynot interfere with the text. The remedies derived from animal substances are also arranged in their scientific order. This work does not profess to be a Materia Medica, but it may do service as a handbook for the use of the student who follows the Linnaean maxim quoted on the title page, and endeavours to obtain a practical knowledge of the various substances with which it is his duty to become acquainted. Book A Text Book of Materia Medica Pharmacology and Therapeutics Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Text Book of Materia Medica Pharmacology and Therapeutics Classic Reprint written by George F. Butler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Materia Medica, Pharmacology and Therapeutics The book is the fruit of some twenty years' experience in teach ing therapeutics and clinical medicine, and many years of private and institutional practice. It has been my effort to embody as much as possible of this experience in a condensed, carefully classified, and usable form. Above everything else, I desire this book to be practical rather than theoretical. It is important not only that the student should acquire the largest amount pos sible of knowledge of the remedies which he expects to use in the practice of medicine, but also that this knowledge should be systematically and logically arranged, so that it may become immediately available. I believe that the classification which I have adopted particularly lends itself to that end, and that it will greatly facilitate the study of this important branch of medicine. While the needs of the student have been kept in the fore ground, I have not forgotten the demands which are made upon it by the practising physician. I have, therefore, endeavored to make the subject-matter as complete and as detailed as the size of such a work will permit, and to give Special prominence to the therapeutic sections. In this field I have drawn largely upon my own experience, not forgetting the larger mine of current medical literature.more or less widespread employment, have been accorded a place. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Organic Materia Medica, Comprising a Description of the Vegetable and Animal Drugs of the British Other With Other Non-Official Medicines: Arrange Systematically and Especially Designed for the Use of Students The Table of Contents in the present work has been fully and systematically arranged, with the view of bringing before the student at a glance the sources of the various drugs, as well as the orders and higher divisions of the Vegetable and Animal Kingdoms to which the plants and animals yielding them respectively belong, more especially those of vegetable origin, which constitute by far the larger proportion of the articles of the Materia Medica. The Author would therefore recommend that, before commencing the study of the drugs of any particular order, reference should be first made to the Table of Contents, when the position of the order will be seen, the names and number of medicinal plants treated of which it contains, and the parts and products of each which are used in medicine. By studying in this way the student will acquire not only a special knowledge of the several drugs, but also a general acquaintance with the several groups in which they are arranged and classified. Download or read book Materia Medica Or Pharmacology and Therapeutics Vol 1 written by William Tully and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-05 with total page 786 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Materia Medica, or Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Vol. 1: Part 1 Several different plans for the execution of the following work were contemplated and discussed a and the author finally Selected that which the publisher seemed to prefer, viz: the plan Of a systematic arrange ment, i. E. 'a' regular classification, under which all the Operations and effects that pertain to a whole class are to be stated, explained and enforced in the form Of a proem to the class; instead of doing it in con nexion with each individual article. Again, the several articles were to be distributed into groups subordinate to the class, and every thing peen liar-to each group was to be said in connexion with the group, and not in connexion with each individual article; while only'the peculiarities of each article, when it happened to have any, were to be mentioned under the individual article. Upon this plan all the individual articles were to have been fully treated Of in their respective classes and of course were to have been mentioned only in one single place, viz: immediately fol lowing the proem to the class into which they were reduced. Under this method, nothing but the peculiarities of the article in comparison with other articles of the same group, would have remained to be said under the individual article itself; and in many instances this would have been scarcely any thing. What medicinal peculiarities, in comparison with each other, that can be specifically described, have Sulphate of Potassa, Sulphate of Soda, Sulphate of Magnesia, Tartrate Of Potassa and Soda, etc? Again, what medicinal peculiarities have a large number of the simple bitter Tonics in comparison with each other? If this plan had been adhered to, it would have been the briefest of any that was contemplated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 754 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Eclectic Materia Medica and Therapeutics We claim to be a free and liberal class of physicians, and we do not recognize the right of any man either inside or outside of the Eclec tic ranks to dictate what we shall use or how we Shall use it. Every practitioner is personally responsible for the results of his practice. If he does a patient a wrong by large doses and poisonous effects, he is guilty to the extent of the wrong. If he fails to give relief or save life because of small doses and ineflicient remedies, he is equally guilty. A physician is responsible to his patients in that he agrees to furnish that knowledge and skill which comes from thorough study and close Observation. He can not claim that he has done his whole duty, unless he has been eclectic in fact, choosing from all sources that which to him seems best. Book Therapeutics and Materia Medica Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book Therapeutics and Materia Medica Vol 1 of 2 written by Alfred Stille and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 1006 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Therapeutics and Materia Medica, Vol. 1 of 2: A Systematic Treatise on the Action and Uses of Medicinal Agents, Including Their Description and History Sous years have elapsed since the present work was undertaken and announced, but its completion has been delayed by several causes, the chief of which were the author's election to the chair of Theory and Practice of Medicine in the Medical Department of Pennsylvania Col lege, and the onerous duties which that ofiice imposed upon him during a period of five years. The studies which they rendered necessary have tended greatly to enlarge the original plan of his treatise, and have also, it is hoped, rendered it more worthy than it would otherwise have been of a favorable reception by physicians and students of Medicine. Intended for those who desire to learn the surest methods of curing disease, it has seemed not only allowable, but imperative, that in the form of the work scientific unity and precision should be subordinated to practical utility. At the same time, it would have been unpardonable to leave out of sight those fragments of scientific knowledge which may one day serve to bridge the chasm between theory and practice, and convert the precepts of therapeutics into laws. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Materia Medica and Pharmacy In revising White's Materia Medica and Therapeutics to bring it into harmony with the United States pharmacopmia so much additional matter has been introduced into the five American editions that it seemed advisable to re-write the book. The forthcoming revision of the Pharmac0paeia has given the Opportunity. The many advances in the subjects here treated have necessitated the division of the work into two distinct parts; this, the first, being devoted to Materia Medica and Pharmacy and the second to Pharmacology and Therapeutics. It is hoped that this natural separation of the subjects will be acceptable to the physician and the student. In the present work full atten tion is given to pharmaceutical processes, to the various kinds of preparations, with their dosage, and to the art of prescrib ing; after which the description of remedies is taken up in detail. The list of therapeutic agents is divided into two main parts, under the heads of Inorganic and Organic Materia Medica, and the general classification adopted is one based on the grouping of the articles according to the class and chemical division or natural order to which each belongs. In order to make the book more complete, condensed descriptions of the action and therapeutic use of all the remedies have been ap pended. Book excerpt: Excerpt from d104 Book of Materia Medica This work was originally prepared for the use of those attending the Lectures on the Materia Medica, in the Homoeopathic Medical College of Pennsylvania, and at their request. It contains the characteristic and most prominent special symptoms of the best proved and most used of our Medicines. The distinction of symptoms, as the result of provings on the healthy (pathogenetic, ) or as the result of clinical observations on the sick (cura ti've, ) or as belonging to both these classes, has not been retained m this work. Such distinctions belong exclusively to the complete Materia Medica, the study of which the present d104-book is intended to facilitate, not to supersede. And to a more thorough and satisfactory study and knowledge of Materia Medica than has been general of late years, it is sincerely hoped that this book may prove both an introduction and a guide.
