Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Incorporated in 1739 on the east bank of the Cape Fear River, Wilmington lies 28 nautical miles from the Atlantic Ocean. The city grew to become the largest in the state before the Civil War, and it remained so until the second decade of the 20th century. In 1840, Wilmington became the terminus of the state's first railroad, and the port grew dramatically. From the Civil War until World War I, naval stores, cotton, and fertilizer were the major reasons for ships to call from all over the world. Since 1789, a US Coast Guard cutter has been docked in Wilmington on the government wharf in front of the US Custom House. People began to look to the river as a place of recreation after the US Battleship North Carolina found a permanent berth on the west side of the river in 1961. What was once a busy harbor is now a scenic draw for tourists and locals who enjoy visiting the old city.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Down the Wild Cape Fear, novelist and nonfiction writer Philip Gerard invites readers onto the fabled waters of the Cape Fear River and guides them on the 200-mile voyage from the confluence of the Deep and Haw Rivers at Mermaid Point all the way to the Cape of Fear on Bald Head Island. Accompanying the author by canoe and powerboat are a cadre of people passionate about the river, among them a river guide, a photographer, a biologist, a river keeper, and a boat captain. Historical voices also lend their wisdom to our understanding of this river, which has been a main artery of commerce, culture, settlement, and war for the entire region since it was first discovered by Verrazzano in 1524. Gerard explores the myriad environmental and political issues being played out along the waters of the Cape Fear. These include commerce and environmental stewardship, wilderness and development, suburban sprawl and the decline and renaissance of inner cities, and private rights versus the public good.

Book The Archaeology of Watercraft Abandonment

Download or read book The Archaeology of Watercraft Abandonment written by Nathan Richards and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-05 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The historical importance and archaeological potential of deliberately discarded watercraft has not been a major feature of maritime archaeological enquiry. While research on the topic has appeared since the 1970s as books, chapters, and articles, most examples have been limited in focus and distribution, and in most cases disseminated as unpublished archaeological reports (i.e. the “gray literature”.) So, too, has there been a lack of a single source representing the diversity of geographical, historic, thematic, and theoretical contexts that ships’ graveyard sites and deliberately abandoned vessels represent. In contrast with much of the theoretical or case-specific literature on the theme of watercraft discard, this volume communicates to the reader the common heritage and global themes that ships’ graveyard sites represent. It serves as a blueprint to illustrate how the remains of abandoned vessels in ships' graveyards are sites of considerable research value. Moreover, the case studies in this volume assist researchers in understanding the evolution of maritime technologies, economies, and societies. This volume is intended to expose research potential, create discussion, and reinforce the significance of a prevalent cultural resource that is often overlooked.
