Book Sustainable Hospitality and Tourism as Motors for Development

Download or read book Sustainable Hospitality and Tourism as Motors for Development written by Willy Legrand and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-09-10 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is now widely agreed that the climate is changing, global resources are diminishing and biodiversity is suffering. Developing countries – many of them considered by the World Tourism Organization to be 'Top Emerging Tourism Destinations' (UNWTO, 2009) – are already suffering the full frontal effect of environmental degradation. The challenge for developing countries is a triple-edged sword, how can economic prosperity be achieved without the perpetual depletion of nature’s reserves, the destruction of rural habitat and the dislocation of traditional societies? Many emerging nations are looking increasingly to the tourism industry as the motor for economic development, with hospitality businesses at the forefront. This book uses twenty-five case studies to demonstrate how it is possible to create income and stimulate regional socio-economic development by using sustainable hospitality and tourism attractions. These case studies focus on issues such as the protection of indigenous cultures as a source of touristic curiosity; the preservation of the environment and the protection of endangered species – such as the plight of turtles in Sri Lanka or butterflies in Costa Rica to encourage tourism. Some cases cover government supported projects, for example, the green parks venture and regional tourism development in the Philippines, an archaeological park initiative in Honduras and the diversity of nature tourism in St. Vincent. Sustainable Hospitality and Tourism as Motors for Development is designed to give students, academics and practitioners a guide for best practices of sustainable hospitality operations in developing countries. Based on case studies, it provides a road map of how to achieve the goals of sustainability giving benchmark examples. The book not only taps into a contemporary business subject, but aims to provide readers with a better understanding of how sustainable theories can be put into practice in hospitality and tourism industries in developing countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'This extraordinary book sets a new benchmark for science writing in India.' - RAMACHANDRA GUHA Tigers, elephants, lions and other large mammals have so far been central to India's conservation story. In spite of the country's vast coastline and millions being dependent on marine resources for their livelihoods, such species and habitats have been largely neglected in writings on wildlife. From Soup to Superstar provides the first comprehensive account of marine conservation in India, focusing on sea turtles, which are at once a fishery resource, a religious symbol and a conservation icon. Worshipped as Kurma, the incarnation of Vishnu, by several communities, these creatures have been part of folklore and mythology for over 2,000 years. Until the 1970s, there were large- and small-scale turtle fisheries in Odisha and the Gulf of Mannar, while eggs and meat were consumed along the rest of the coast. Since then, several conservation programmes have been led in these regions by naturalists, scientists, activists and concerned citizens with diverse, often conflicting, approaches. Globally, attention has centred on the mass-nesting beaches in Odisha, where over 1,00,000 turtles may nest simultaneously. New threats have emerged and elicited responses at local, national and international levels. Bringing together a range of issues and actors that have affected the world of sea turtles, filled with fascinating insights into scientific research and human-animal ecologies, this is a definitive chronicle of the efforts that have been made to protect these mysterious creatures in the last fifty years.

Book Marine Turtles of the Indian Subcontinent

Download or read book Marine Turtles of the Indian Subcontinent written by Kartik Shanker and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2007-01-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sea turtles belong to the most ancient line of living reptiles. However, there is a lack of up-to-date information on the regional status and conservation efforts of sea turtles on the subcontinent. Addressing this gap, Marine Turtles of the Indian Subcontinent documents the results of surveys carried out under the Sea Turtle project sponsored by the Indian government and the United Nations. With contributions from leading experts from a variety of disciplines, the book provides up-to-date information on the regional status and conservation efforts of sea turtles on the subcontinent. The book records the status of sea turtles along the east and west coasts of the Indian mainland, the Lakshaweep archipelago, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and surveys their status in Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.

Book Conservation of Pacific Sea Turtles

Download or read book Conservation of Pacific Sea Turtles written by Peter H. Dutton and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2011-07-31 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across the Pacific, populations of some species of sea turtles face extinction unless recent dramatic declines are reversed. The continuing decline of leatherbacks and loggerheads in particular illustrates the limitations of the current gradual and unilateral approach to conservation. Recovery requires instead a holistic solution that addresses all sources of mortality throughout the entire life history and habitat use of these transnational populations. Historically conservation efforts have focused on nesting sites to protect eggs and breeding females; mortality from coastal and highseas fisheries was not addressed. In the past five years, these recovery efforts have widened to include rigorously curtailing fishing and technological fixes that lower rates of incidental sea turtle deaths during fishing. Although each of these approaches shows promise, it has become increasingly clear that they alone will not recover severely depleted populations. Recognizing the urgency of the problem, this book presents ideas and case studies by conservation biologists, economists, marine life policy experts, fishing industry and fisheries professionals, management specialists, and development assistance researchers. It provides a new synthesis and blueprint for action that shifts the paradigm from piecemeal and unilateral conservation to a more holistic and multilateral approach to the recovery of Pacific sea turtle populations.
