Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual on Explosives Explosives may be simply explained as substances, either in'solid or liquid form, which by the action of heat or other cause are capable of very rapid conversion into gases, occupying a much larger Space than the original substance. The fact oi certain substances possessing such properties has been known for many centuries, and there is perhaps no substance which has wrought such important changes in the world's) history as Gunpowder; and yet its origin will always remain one of the mysteries of antiquity, for no one can say with certainty where, or by whom, it was first used. The invention of gunpowder is by various authorities attributed to the Chinese, the Arabs, the Hindus, and with a greater degree of certainty to several mediaeval monkish alchemists, and among the many legends surrounding its origin, the fact has been fairly well established that its properties were known to the great English pioneer of science, 'roger Bacon, who died in 1294, and who is, by'some, claimed to be the inventor. Artillery The following course of lectures is intended to serve as a manual and guide in the practical laboratory-work in the course of explosives at the U. S. Artillery School. The aim has been to present the subject systematically and logically, due consideration being given to the sequence in which the various classes of explosives are arranged, so that a certain degree of familiarity may be acquired in manipulating the less sensitive and dangerous mixtures before undertaking experiments with the high explosives. Particular attention has been given to the service tests of the various explosives, in the description of which all technical terms have been avoided as far as possible. While the bulk of the matter here presented is the result of compilation, it is believed that a portion at least appears i in print for the first time. In submitting these pages I wish to acknowledge my indebtedness for assistance and encouragement to Professor Munroe, and Lieutenant-Colonel R. T. Frank, 2d Artillery, Commandant of the Artillery School. With the permission of Professor C. E. Munroe, Chemist to the U. S. Moreover, it is not stated explicitly whether the explosives are intended for use in coal mines or for general blasting purposes. In the United States of America, explosives in tended for use in coal mines are examined by the Bureau of Mines, which, however, has no power to prevent the use of others because regulations on this matter are made by the individual states. If they pass they are placed on the list of Permissible Explosives. The compositions are not published, but the class of composition is stated. Until the second half of the nineteenth century, gunpowder was practically the only explosive used on a considerable scale, and it was employed for all purposes. Consequently it does not fall into any of the classes mentioned, or rather it could be placed in several of them.
