Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of the Anatomy of Vertebrated Animals The present work is intended to provide students of comparative anatomy with a condensed statement of the most important facts relating to the structure of vertebrated animals, which have hitherto been ascertained. Except in a very few cases, I have intentionally abstained from burdening the text with references; and, therefore, the reader, while he is justly entitled to hold me responsible for any errors he may detect, will do well to give me no credit for what may seem original, unless his knowledge is sufficient to render him a competent judge on that head. About two-thirds of the illustrations are original, the rest are copied from figures given by Agassiz, Bischoff, Burmeister, Busch, Carus, Duges, Flower, Gegenbaur, Hyrtl, Von Meyer, Muller, Pander and D'Alton, Parker, Quatrefages, and Traquair. A considerable portion of the book has been in type for some years; and this circumstance must be my excuse for appearing to ignore the views of several valued contemporaries. I refer more especially to those contained in recently-published works of Professors Flower and Gegenbaur. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Comparative Anatomy To domestic animals, and to such as the sports of the field bring most frequently under our notice, I have paid particular attention; partly, because such animals are most easily procured for dissection, and partly on account of the great interest which is likely to be taken in a correct knowledge of their structure. With regard to foreign animals, I have uniformly adverted to their most striking peculiari ties. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of the Anatomy of Invertebrated Animals The present volume on the Anatomy of Invertebrated Animals fulfills an undertaking to produce a treatise on comparative anatomy for students, into which I entered two-and-twenty years ago. A considerable installment of the work, relating wholly to the Invertebrata, appeared in the Medical Times and Gazette for the years 1856 and 1857, under the title of "Lectures on General Natural History." But a variety of circumstances having conspired, about that time, to compel me to direct my attention more particularly to the Vertebrata, I was led to interrupt the publication of the "Lectures" and to complete the Vertebrate half of the proposed work first. This appeared in 1871, as a "Manual of the Anatomy of Vertebrated Animals." A period of incapacity for any serious toil prevented me from attempting, before 1874, to grapple with the immense mass of new and important information respecting the structure, and especially the development, of Invertebrated animals, which the activity of a host of investigators has accumulated of late years. Book Artistic Anatomy of Animals Classic Reprint

Download or read book Artistic Anatomy of Animals Classic Reprint written by Edouard Cuyer and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Artistic Anatomy of Animals A few lines will suffice to explain why we have compiled the present volume, to what wants it responds, and what its sphere of usefulness may possibly embrace. In our teaching of plastic anatomy, especially at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts - where, for the past nine years, we have had the very great honour of supplementing the teaching of our distinguished master, Mathias Duval, after having been prosector for his course of lectures since 1881 - it is our practice to give, as a complement to the study of human anatomy, a certain number of lessons on the anatomy of those animals which artists might be called on to represent. Now, we were given to understand that the subject treated in our lectures interested our hearers, so much so that we were not surprised to learn that a certain number repeatedly expressed a desire to see these lectures united in book form. To us this idea was not new; for many years the work in question had been in course of preparation, and we had collected materials for it, with the object of filling up a void of which the existence was to be regretted. But our many engagements prevented us from executing our project as early as we would have wished. It is this work which we publish to-day. Putting aside for a moment the wish expressed by our hearers, we feel ourselves in duty bound to inquire whether the utility of this publication is self-evident.
