Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Pathological Anatomy, Vol. 2 of 4 The principal hospital of the Austrian capital, the largest in the world, offers very extensive opportunities and unusual facilities for the cultivation of Pathological Anatomy. Exclusive of the Lying-in Hospital and the Lunatic Asylum, which occupy the same range of buildings, the Kaiserlich-Koniglich-Allgemeine-Krankenhaus (Imperial Royal General Hospital) contains 104 wards, capable of receiving 2214 patients; 1247 beds being destined for males, and 967 for females. We find that in 1838, the number of patients treated amounted to 20,545; of these, 2678 died, giving a mortality of 13.03 per cent., or one death in 7.6 cases. As I am not provided with tables of mortality for other years, I am unable to state the average annual mortality in the hospital; but it does not appear, by a comparison with the mortuary tables of the Viennese Foundling Hospital, that the year 1838 was marked by peculiar endemic or epidemic influences. These have been duly embodied in the five successive German editions that have appeared in the meantime. The work has accordingly been so altered and enlarged that in preparing a third English edition we have had entirely to rewrite the text, and to recast the bibliographical and other supplementary portions. The number of pathological papers and monographs to which reference might fitly be made is now so great that only the more recent and important can be dealt with. But the student of historical tastes will find ample references to the earlier literature in the previous English editions; and by omitting them in this much valuable space has been gained. The second volume, containing the sections on the alimentary tract with the liver and pancreas, the respiratory and genitourinary systems, the eye, and the ear, is already in the press and will shortly be published. We hope to follow it with a new version of the part on General Pathological Anatomy, prepared with the author's sanction and assistance from the latest German edition. We desire here to record our thanks to Dr W. G. Spiller, of Philadelphia, for his help in preparing the translation of Sections VI and VII. While the general arrangement remains the same, the various topics embraced in the work have been more thoroughly systematized, and, wherever it was practicable, the language has been rendered more concise and terse. One hundred and thirty new cuts have been added. They were drawn, for the most part, from my own specimens, and under my immediate superintendence, by Mr. Daniels, and engraved by Mr. Baxter. These, added to those in the former edition, make the num ber of original cuts nearly two hundred. The remainder have been copied from various sources, as Reynaud, Marcet, Lawrence, Miller, Curling, Churchill, Bird, and others. Not a few of the figures thus borrowed have become, as it were, the common property of the pro fession, and are no longer traceable to their respective authors.
