Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Student's Manual of Geology The Author of this work had made some progress in the preparation of the present edition before the illness seized him by which he was removed from among us. Finding the task to be greater than, with his impaired health, he could accomplish, he asked me to relieve him of it; and I accord ingly undertook to prepare this re-issue. My labours, how ever, were unfortunately suspended for nearly a year in consequence of a fever caught among the volcanic islands of the Liparis. Hence the delay in the appearance of the work. The reader will observe, on comparing the present with former editions, that so many changes have been made that it may in some respects be regarded as a new book. A large mass of additional material has been added; but, by adopting a different mode of printing, this has been effected without adding to the bulk of the volume. Book Manual of Mineralogy and Geology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Manual of Mineralogy and Geology Classic Reprint written by Ebenezer Emmons and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-22 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Mineralogy and Geology A new edition of the following work having been call ed for, the author has been induced to remodel it, by the conviction that a method of teaching and studying the science different from, and superior to, that which had for merly been pursued in this country, ought to be adopted. That method is well known to have possessed too much of a traditionary character, and to have obliged the stu dent to depend more upon the ipse. Diorit of his instructor than his own investigation. In preparing this edition it has been the design of the author, so far as it was in his power, to furnish the student with a guide by means of which he might be satisfactorily conducted through the process of examining minerals, to the attainment of cor rect results. To accomplish this, sufficient information is given in the following pages, to enable him rightly to employ the characters of mineral substances and to trace the relations existing between them. Book A Manual of Elementary Geology

Download or read book A Manual of Elementary Geology written by Charles Lyell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Elementary Geology: Or the Ancient Changes of the Earth and Its Inhabitants He was soon informed by Mr. Logan, at that time engaged in the geological survey of Canada, that the white sandstone above Montreal was really much older than the Old Red, or Devonian. It had in fact been ascertained many years before, by the State surveyors of New York (who called it the Potsdam to lie at the base of the whole Silurian series. As such it had been pointed out to me in 1841, in the valley of the Mohawk, by Mr. James Hall, * and its position was correctly described by Mr. Emmons, on the borders of Lake Champlain, where I examined it in 1842. It has there the character of a shallow water deposit, ripple-marked throughout a considerable thickness, and full of a species of Lingula. The flat valves of this shell, of a dark color, are so numerous, and so arranged in horizontal layers, as to play the part of mica, causing the rock to divide into laminae, as in some micaceous sandstones. Book Manual of Geology Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book Manual of Geology Vol 1 of 2 written by John Phillips and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Geology, Vol. 1 of 2: Theoretical and Practical From the days when Geology began to develop into an exact science, the student has been encountered by guides in the form of books, of two kinds; one promising to "lead him the sweetest and easiest way;" the other demonstrating that "of things good and beautiful, the Gods give nothing to men without great toil." The earlier writers gathered facts from too wide a field to demonstrate the steps of geological evolution. In the words of Professor Suess: "It is an exceedingly difficult task to teach a science well, which grows as rapidly as ours. The difficulty is not caused by the enormous yearly increase of new observations, because this may be overcome by patience, and by a diligent study of every good memoir. But I find that many of our best men go wrong in hanging to details, and losing sight of the grand features of science, or in proclaiming popular theories, and forgetting the painful arts of observation amidst the applause of a short-sighted crowd." The difficulty of teaching has also been the difficulty of text-book writing. And among the few works which have aspired to achieve a noble ideal, probably the most honoured place must be given to the Manual of Professor John Phillips. As the nephew of William Smith, he knew the history and growth of geological ideas as well as facts; and as a public teacher was not unmindful of the aspects of geology which are of vital importance in unfolding thought and imagination for the learner. Book A Geological Manual Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Geological Manual Classic Reprint written by Henry T. De La Beche and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-30 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Geological Manual The Author has availed himself largely of the additions made by M. Von Dechen, with the assistance of the ce lebrated Von Buch and other German geologists, to the German translation of this Work, more particularly as respects the geology of Germany and the lists of or ganie remains. He has not been able to avail himself of any additions to the French translation of the Manual, made under the superintendence of M. Brochant de Vil liers, as it will not appear much before the present edition but the Author is informed that it will contain a further development, by M. Elie dc Beaumont, of his theory of the elevation of mountain chains, as also additions to the lists of organic remains. He has not seen a copy of the American edition of this Work, and is therefore not aware that any additions have been made to it. There can be little doubt that, from a strong desire to find similar organic remains in supposed equivalent de podts, even at great distances, and from an equally strong desire to discover new species, the same organic remains, particularly shells, often figure in our catalogues under two names, while difi'erent species are made to appear as one. Notwithstanding these difficulties, it will, how ever; be evident, from a glance of these catalogues, that a great mass of information has been gradually collected on this subject alone, from which the most important results must follow, even though the various lists may require very considerable correction. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Elementary Geology: Or the Ancient Changes of the Earth and Its Inhabitants as Illustrated by Geological Monuments The last, or fifth edition of this work, was published in February 1855, so that nearly ten years have since elapsed. I have allowed it to remain several years out of print, having been much occupied in travelling through various parts of Europe, and latterly in writing my Geological Evidences of the Antiquity of Man, as well as the appendices to the second and third editions of that treatise. In the interval since 1855 I have published several supplements to the Ele ments, the contents of which are now incorporated in this work. This and other new matter, illustrated by more than 50 new woodcuts, has added 130 pages to the volume, which has thus outgrown the dimensions usually assigned to a Manual. I have, therefore, restored to the book its original title of The Elements of Geology, under which name it first appeared in 1838, when it consisted of an expansion of the fourth book of my Principles of Geology, which had at that time reached a fifth edition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introductory d104-Book of Geology Outset, but it will be found as he advances to be the more pleasant as well as more profitable mode of procedure. Every science, like every manual art, has a style and mode of handling peculiar to itself a fact too often lost sight of in volumes professing to be Popular Treatises and Easy Introductions. A. Soldier does not acquire the ready use of his musket by being trained to handle a broomstick; neither can a student become familiar with the truths of his science, or be taught to apply them, unless through the medium. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Geology: A Laboratory Manual Based on Topographic Maps and Folios of the United States Geological Survey, for Use With Classes in Physiographic and Structural Geology This manual is a combination of the exercises now in use in the laboratories of the authors, with students of somewhat advanced grade. It is offered to teachers and students in the belief that a clear understanding of topographic maps contributes in an important way to a thorough knowledge of Physiography and physiographic geology, and that the use of these maps should be carried far enough to make them almost as familiar as the printed page. It is hoped that the manual may be useful to students who are under the direction of teachers who are familiar with modern methods of laboratory work in physiography and physical geology, as well as to those who are not so fortunate. The subject involved is not inherently difficult and may be mastered by any serious student, whether he be pupil or teacher, or altogether independent of schools. The work is based on topographic maps (and a few folios) of the United States Geological Survey, and on a key to the interpretation of topographic maps, published by the same survey. It is intended for the use of students how have some knowledge of physiography, or who are sufficiently mature to take up the subject in a somewhat thoroughgoing way. It might well be used, for example, by students using Chamberlin and Salisbury's Geology, Vol. I (Geologic Processes) for a text. While the outline follows the general order of this text, it may be adapted to courses based on any other standard text of similar scope.
