Book A Manual of Church History Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Manual of Church History Classic Reprint written by Heinrich Ernst Ferdinand Guericke and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Church History Guericke's Manual of Church History, of which the first division is now presented to the public in an English version, has passed through eight editions in Germany. The work was first published in 1833, and the last volume of the eighth edition appeared in 1855. The demand for so many re-issues of this hand-book, within the space of a little more than twenty years, in a country distinguished for the fecundity of its authorship, and the fastidiousness of its scholarship, affords strong presumptive evidence of its intrinsic merits. During the last twenty-five years, the German mind has been remarkably active in the department of Ecclesiastical History, and the growth of German literature in this direction has been luxuriant; and yet the manual of Guericke continues to hold a place certainly among the very first, as a book for students and lecture-rooms. A brief specification of the leading characteristics of this work may appropriately accompany its first introduction to the American and English public. Book A Manual of Church History Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Church History, Vol. 1 of 2 May be considered a probable fact, the episcopate of Peter a questionable explanation of his presence at Rome, and its twenty-five years' range a fable confuted by the Scripture history itself. The statement that the Apostles suffered in the fourteenth year of Nero need not clash with Tacitus' record of the attack on mm the Christians in his tenth year. A per scontion, at first prompted by Nero's desire to attach the stigma of the great fire to the already odious sect of Christians, may have begun in an. 64 and continued with intermissions till the emperors death in a.d. 68. The accounts represent Nero's victims as suffering fearful cruelties. They were crucified, cast to wild beasts in the arena, and even smeared with pitch and burnt as living torches to light the public gardens. It is uncertain whether the persecution extended beyond Rome. N 0 other is recorded till that of Domitian. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Compendium of English Church History: From 1688 to 1830, With a Preface Several years ago I promised the publishers of this Volume to prepare for them a Manual of the History of the English Church between 1688 and 1830. Other duties arose and claimed all my time, and I found myself unable to perform my promise. But for two or three years I was in great hope that the work would be done, in my stead, by a member of the University who would, I am sure, have provided an excellent handbook on this subject. He however was called away to other labours, and finding himself unable to make such progress with the volume as he desired at last withdrew' from the work. Soon after this disappointment, both to the publishers and myself, the following pages were offered me, and on perusing them I thought them not unsuitable to the purpose for which they were prepared. I therefore undertook to look them over as they passed through the press and to introduce them by a short preface when they were in print. Book English Church Teaching on Faith Life and Order Classic Reprint

Download or read book English Church Teaching on Faith Life and Order Classic Reprint written by RIGHT REV H C G. MOULE and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Church Teaching on Faith Life and Order This manual is designed to aid students of our English Church system. It may also be found useful to clergymen and others who have to conduct classes on the History and Doctrines of our Church, and who desire to follow the lines laid down by our Reformers. The need of some such manual has been widely felt, but it has not been easy to do exactly what was sought. Some of the topics touched upon are large and complicated, and brief utterances on them are liable to be misunderstood. The writers are conscious that in many respects they have fallen short of their own ideal, and that they may not have fulfilled the expectations and requirements of those whose interests the have at heart. But they have sought to face the varied aspects of this subject fairly, if not fully, and clearly, if not completely. Though they have worked in general harmony, each writer if answerable only for his own portion of the manual. Book English Church History

Download or read book English Church History written by Alfred Plummer and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Church History: From the Death of Archbishop Parker to the Death of King Charles I Two things need to be stated respecting these four lectures: (1) they were not written with a view to publication; (2) they were not written with the expectation of supplying anything that was very original. (1) The lectures were written to excite the interest, or refresh the memories, of those who asked for them and came to listen to them; in the hope that some might thereby be induced to begin, or return to, independent study of the momentous period in which the lectures attempt to point out some leading features. They were not produced with the anticipation of making a permanent addition to the abundant literature on the subject: and when the project of publishing them was first urged upon the lecturer by some of those who heard him, he put aside the proposal on the ground that the lectures were probably of too ephemeral a character to merit preservation after they had served their immediate purpose. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Church of England The Church of England is a portion of that Corporate Organisation of Christianity which our Lord Jesus Christ founded, which His Apostles built up, which was gradually extended by them and their successors from city to city and from land to land, and which has lived in unbroken continuity to the present time. At what time, by what channels, this Divine Organisation was extended to this land, is the subject of this first chapter. Book History of the Christian Church Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the Christian Church Classic Reprint written by J. H. Kurtz and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Christian Church Little, it is believed, requires to be said either by way of intro duction to, or apology for, the appearance of the present volume, which carries the narrative to the Reformation. In another volume it is proposed to continue this history down to our days. But in order to adapt the work to the wants of British readers, it will be necessary for the Editor, while following Professor Kurtz in his accurate researches on the German Reformation, to detail with the same care and fulness the History of the Calvinistic Churches. The want of a manual like the present, at once so comprehensive as to serve for reference, and so condensed as to form a suitable text book for students, has been long and increasingly felt. On a comparison of various works of this kind, that by Professor Kurtz has appeared to the Editor best adapted for reproduction in English. It has been sought to make the Translation faithful without being slavish. Throughout, the book has been anew and carefully compared with standard works on the subject in English and German. Where necessary, slight modifications have been made, and expressions altered or omitted, when Dr Kurtz's Lutheran predilections have led him beyond the limits of strict historical evidence. Such alterations, however, are not material; they have been requisite only in few instances, and do not in any case change the character of the book. The Literature of the subject has also undergone careful revision, and been to a considerable extent supplemented. The Editor alone is responsible for the following portions of the volume - viz., the Life of Wycliffe, the Theology of Wycliffe, the Lollards, the Sketch of the System of Hus, the Bohemian Brethren, and Humanism in England and Scotland. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Church, Vol. 3 of 3 WE take pleasure in congratulating Rev. Doctor Pubisch, President of St. Mary's Seminary, and Rev. Thomas S. Byrne, on the completion of their great work, the translation into English of the Manual of Universal Church History, by Rev. Dr. John Alzog, Professor of Theology in the University of Freiburg, Brisgan, Baden. The Additions and Notes appended to this confessedly great work by our American translators give it, in the judgment of Catholic and non-catholic readers and scholars, a character of originality, and stamp it as worthy of taking rank with the best produc tions on the important subject of which it treats, and of sup plying a want which, we say it with due reverence, our best historians, or biographers, or hagiographers have, for various reasons and circumstances, left unsatisfied.
