Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Cursive Shorthand Hitherto the use of Shorthand has been chiefly confined to clerks and reports: it has as yet, to any appreciable extent, supplanted longhand for use in ordinary writing. The reason of this appears to be that the majority of existing system are either, like Talyor's, deficient in completeness (that is, they cannot distinguish words with sufficient accuracy), or, like Pitman's, involve too many ambiguities and refinements, and cannot be fully written at a reasonable speed (see p. 15). The conditions which a system of shorthand for general use should satisfy, are discussed at some length in the Introduction to the present work. The argument is briefly recapitulated on p. 40, to which the reader is referred for summary of the claims of 'Cursive Shorthand.' The chief features of 'Cursive' are facility, completeness, and freedom from it is therefore wanting in brevity. Book The Manual of Natural Shorthand

Download or read book The Manual of Natural Shorthand written by August Mengelkamp and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-31 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Manual of Natural Shorthand: Designed for Class or Self-Instruction Another point of greatest importance is that of the assignment of the shorthand characters to individual let ters. Anyone conversant with other connective vowel systems, will have observed that the simplest characters have not always been assigned to the most frequent let ters, but to such letters or rather, sounds, as insure the most facile combinations. In other words: the value of a stenographic character is determined not so much by its frequency, as by its combination with other letters. It is a principle that underlies the construction of every connective vowel system; it is a problem that can be solved only after years of arduous labor and experi ments. The most important consonants with reference to combination are t, d, r, l, and w. In Natural Shorthand, t and d not only readily join with all vowel strokes, but medially and finally connect with consonant and vowel strokes, and that with a single effort of the hand. This is a feature characteristic with Natural Shorthand only, and unhesitatingly and truthfully we put it forth as the most logical and successful solution of the Lengthening Principle in the history of English Shorthand. It more than compensates for the so-called Blends and Double Consonants of other systems, which because of their vague -and unsettled character, we do not consider a desideratum in modern shorthand writing. Book Manual of Syllabic Shorthand

Download or read book Manual of Syllabic Shorthand written by James Simson and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Syllabic Shorthand: A System of Brief Writing by Syllabic Characters, Based on the Common Alphabet, and Written According to the Sounds of Spoken Language The Author considers no apology necessary in issuing a Third Edition of Syllabic Shorthand. As noticed in the Preface to the Second Edition of the system, the First Edition of 500 copies, published in September 1883, was exhausted in six months; while the fact has now to be noted that, notwithstanding the publication of a Second Edition of 2000 copies in May 1884, a Third Edition is now called for. In compliance with the request of numerous friends and writers of the system, the Author has discarded lithographic work in favour of engraved shorthand type. More justice has thus been done to the beauty and symmetry of the system; while, owing to the clearness of the characters, the work of the Shorthand Student is rendered all the more easy. An additional advantage in this Edition is to be found in the fact that the whole system is comprehended in one, instead of being spread over several books; and the complete class-book now published is probably one of the cheapest and highly finished of any Shorthand system ever presented to the public. The Manual may be used either with or without a teacher. Should further and more extended exercises be required, they may be found in the Scottish Shorthand Journal, or be had on application to the Author. Dement, in a personal letter to Mr. Dougherty, reiterates his previous statements in regard to Shorthand speed. It does not come from, but is retarded by a multiplie ity of arbitrary forms. So long as we work from principle with which we are entirely familiar, the mind works quickly and with as much accuracy as our mastery of the princi ples permits; but when seeking arbitrary the mind must search for a particular symbol. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eclectic Shorthand: Writing by Principles Instead of Arbitrary Signs This system of shorthand writing has been before the public long enough to either demonstrate or refute the claim that it is the easiest to learn, the simplest in struct ure, the briefest, and yet the fullest phonetic writing of the language that has been devised, and it still lives. Its development has been the result of a single seed thought. In 1878, while teaching the alphabet of Taki graphy, I became strongly impressed with the fact that there was no law of motion in the phonographic alphabets, such as in the written Roman alphabet, and set about seeking a more facile and cursive set of characters to represent the alphabet for purposes of shorthand writing. In writing the Roman alphabet, the motion of. The pen is upward and downward alternately, except an occasional stroke to the right, which always occurs after an upward stroke. Hence the movement of the hand is only upward, downward, and to the right, and the mental action in writing, after a little practice, becomes very easy.
