Book A Manual of Ancient History

Download or read book A Manual of Ancient History written by Leonhard Schmitz and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 649 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Ancient History: From the Remotest Times to the Overthrow of the Western Empire The object of the present work is to furnish a brief but complete summary of the history of antiquity, from the remotest times down to the overthrow of the Roman Empire in the West, in A.D.476. The history of Greece and Rome is taught in all schools professing to give a liberal education, but this is often done to the entire exclusion of the other nations of antiquity, which, though they did not exercise an equally powerful influence either upon their contemporaries or upon posterity, yet ought not to be passed over by any one desirous to obtain a complete view, and form a correct estimate, of the ancient world. The present manual, therefore, embracing the history of all the nations of antiquity, is designed to present to the student, besides the histories of Greece and Rome, an outline of that of the non-classical nations, and to devote to each of them as much attention as their historical importance may seem to demand. Book A Manual of the Ancient History of the East Vol 1

Download or read book A Manual of the Ancient History of the East Vol 1 written by Francois Lenormant and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-02 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of the Ancient History of the East, Vol. 1: To the Commencement of the Median Wars In the history of the Israelites two things run side by side one, the constant, direct, and supernatural interferen'ce of the Almighty with the destiny of that nation to whom He had entrusted the sublime mission of preserving religious truth, and from which the Redeemer was to come the other, events arising from ordinary and natural causes apart from this supernatural interference. In writing Sacred History, it would be natural to give prominence to this Divine government of Israel; but in introducing the Israelites into a picture of the whole civilisation of Ancient Asia, it was necessary to look more at the merely human aspect of their history, without, however, for a moment losing sight of the entirely exceptional character of that history. Book A Manual of Greek Historical Inscriptions Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Manual of Greek Historical Inscriptions Classic Reprint written by E. L. Hicks and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Greek Historical Inscriptions To a certain degree any and every object recovered from the ruins of antiquity will help in the illustration of ancient life. But the study of archaeology rises almost to an equality with the study of ancient literature, when we find in a work of art the interpretation of the spirit of a period, or when the excavation of an ancient site unlocks the secret of its history. It is true that the very richness of Greek literary records has deprived the evidence of Greek archaeology of some of its importance. Nevertheless the evidence of Greek coinage has never failed to engage the attention of historians; and any scholar may see at a glance how intimately Greek politics are illustrated by Greek coinage, by turning over the numismatic manuals lately issued by the British Museum 1. Book A Manual of Roman Antiquities Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Manual of Roman Antiquities Classic Reprint written by William Ramsay and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-23 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Roman Antiquities Tm: intrinsic value Of Professor Ramsay's Manual is proved by the fact that, although written more than forty years ago, it is still constantly in demand, not only as a Text-book for those commencing the study of Roman Antiquities, but as a book of reference for those who have grown grey in the prose cution of such studies. The great light which recent excavations have thrown on the field of Roman Topography, however, necessarily left the section of the work bearing on this part of the subject behind, and the desirability of bringing it up to date was evident. Under these circumstances it was mutually agreed that the task Q of revising the Manual, and placing it once more an courant with existing knowledge, should be entrusted to Professor Rodolfo Lanciani, of the University of Rome. The connection which this eminent Topographer has had, for more than a quarter of a century, with excavations in and near Rome, the great number of works which he has published on the subject, and his command of the English language, all combine to justify fully his selection as Editor. Prof. Lanciani has almost re written the first chapter, and illustrated it with new maps and views. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Outlines of Ancient History

Download or read book Outlines of Ancient History written by William C. Morey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Ancient History: For the Use of High Schools and Academies This book is intended to describe in a simple and compre hensive way the progress of civilization among the peoples of the ancient world. It seeks to illustrate the realhistor ical significance of these peoples, and to point out the contri butions which each has made to the progress of mankind. The significance of each country is estimated by the per manent elements of its civilization, or those elements which have survived after the nation has passed away. The purpose of the book is, therefore, not simply to describe the growth of separate countries, but to indicate in a general way the continuity of ancient history. The usual division of ancient history into Oriental, Greek, and Roman, has been followed not only as the most con venient arrangement, but as affording the means to illustrate in a satisfactory way the progressive stages in the growth of ancient civilization. A brief sketch of the Oriental countries is given to show the beginnings of man's industrial life and the initial stages in the development of government, art, science, and religion. The Greek world'is viewedas the historical field especially distinguished for the growth of political liberty and the development of a high intellec tual and aesthetic culture. In describing the Roman world, the attempt has been made to keep clearly in view that which has given to Rome its distinctive place in the world's history - the genius for organization, the growth of an imperial dominion, and the development of a universal system of government and law. Book A Manual of Ancient History Illustrations

Download or read book A Manual of Ancient History Illustrations written by M. E. Thalheimer and published by VAN ANTWERP, BRAGG & CO.. This book was released on 1872 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several causes have lately augmented both the means and the motives for a more thorough study of History. Modern criticism, no longer accepting primitive traditions, venal eulogiums, partisan pamphlets, and highly wrought romances as equal and trustworthy evidence, merely because of their age, is teaching us to sift the testimony of ancient authors, to ascertain the sources and relative value of their information, and to discern those special aims which may determine the light in which their works should be viewed. The geographical surveys of recent travelers have thrown a flood of new light upon ancient events; and, above all, the inscriptions discovered and deciphered within half a century, have set before us the great actors of old times, speaking in their own persons from the walls of palaces and tombs. Nor is the new knowledge of little value. If we look familiarly into the daily life of our fellow-men thousands of years ago, it is to find them toiling at the same problems which perplex us; suffering the same conflict of passion and principle; failing, it may be, for our warning, or winning for our encouragement; in any case, reaching results which ought to prevent our repeating their mistakes. The national questions which fill our newspapers were discussed long ago in the Grove, the Agora, and the Forum; the relative advantages of government by the many and the few, were wrought out to a demonstration in the states and colonies of Greece; and no man whose vote, no woman whose influence, may sway in ever so small a degree the destinies of our Republic, can afford to be ignorant of what has already been so wisely and fully accomplished. Present tasks can only be clearly seen and worthily performed in the light of long experience; and that liberal acquaintance with History which, under a monarchical government, might safely be left as an ornament and privilege to the few, is here the duty of the many. The present work aims merely to afford a brief though accurate outline of the results of the labors of Niebuhr, Bunsen, Arnold, Mommsen, Rawlinson, and others—results which have never, so far as we know, been embraced in any American school-book, but which within a few years have greatly increased the treasures of historical literature. While it may have been impossible, within our limits, to reproduce the full and life-like outlines in which they have portrayed the characters of ancient times, we have sought, with their aid, at least to ascertain the limits of fact and fable. With but few exceptions, and those clearly stated as such, we have introduced no narrative which can reasonably be doubted. The writer is more confident of justice of aim than of completeness of attainment. No one can so acutely feel the imperfections of a work like this, as the one who has labored at every point to avoid or to remove them; to compress the greatest amount of truth into the fewest words, and while reducing the scale, to preserve a just proportion in the details. To hundreds of former pupils, who have never been forgotten in this labor of love, and to the kind judgment of fellow-teachers—some of whom well know that effort has not been spared, even where ability may have failed—this Manual is respectfully submitted.
