Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual English History for the Use of Schools This "Manual of English History" has been prepared to meet the wants of those schools whose limited time forbids an extended course of study. The mere committal to memory of the names of kings and isolated events, however important, is in no proper sense a study of history. There should be enough of explanation and detail to make intelligible the relation which one event bears to another, that is, the cause and effect of events. The author has sought, therefore, in the preparation of this manual, to arrange the essential facts of English history in the briefest manner consistent with clearness and a proper understanding of causal relations. The most valuable lesson to be learned by American youth from the history of the mother country is the worth of liberty, civil and religious. The struggle between the king and the people, the one striving to maintain the royal prerogative and the other to secure their natural rights, was happily over long before we became an independent nation. The principles established by the Revolution of 1688 stand an enduring monument of the triumph of the people. Our constitution is but the matured product of that long and painful struggle, and a just conception of the one can be gained only by a careful study of the other. Download or read book Source Book of English History for the Use of Schools and Readers Classic Reprint written by Elizabeth Kimball Kendall and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Source-Book of English History, for the Use of Schools and Readers The purpose of this little book is stated elsewhere, but a few words of explanation are in place here. In the selection of materials I have endeavored to use extracts which were of real value for purposes of study, and yet of a nature to arouse the interest of the boy or girl of sixteen. No attempt has been made to treat of every important event or aspect of English history. I have rather sought to bring together extracts illustrating the dominant interest of each period. It may seem that a disproportionate share of the extracts is given to the later times. I have felt that this departure from the practice of most histories and text-books was justified by the great difficulty in gaining access to the original materials of the history of the last three centuries. Effort has been made to use the earliest or best edition available, and to reproduce the text with exactness. In some cases, however, the spelling has been deliberately modernised. This has been done wherever I feared that the difficulties of the original form might check the interest of the student. I am under much obligation to many writers, editors, and publishers, without whose generous courtesy the preparation of this book would have been impossible. Thus it is by the liberality of Mr. D. Nutt, and of Messrs. G. Putnam's Sons, and of the several editors, that I am able to print Extracts 22, 27, 31, 33, 37, and 41. Book A Topical Outline of English History Including References for Literature

Download or read book A Topical Outline of English History Including References for Literature written by Frederick James Allen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Topical Outline of English History, Including References for Literature: For the Use of Classes in High Schools and Academies History has more sides than the gold and silver shield. No writer has given us all that is best upon any period or subject. The method of the following pages, carefully developed, and tested in the class-room with gratifying results, enables the student to appropriate the best to be found in many books. It covers the entire field of English history, and aims to fill that place in its study which the laboratory manual fills in chemistry. The topics are more complete than can be found in any one text book. They are placed upon the left side of the page, with num bers upon the right referring to the pages of the latest editions of standard school histories. The arrangement is both chronological and related, special effort being made so to group facts that relation and result may be clearly understood. Careful attention has been given to dates, and constant sight of topic and date, rather than any committing to memory, fixes both in mind. In the case of sovereigns, the pages given mark only the beginnings of the reigns; in other cases the references include all of value to be found. This book is a result of practical teaching, and those teachers who have seen it in preparation have warmly advised its publication. Book Armstrong s Primer of English History for School and Family Use Classic Reprint

Download or read book Armstrong s Primer of English History for School and Family Use Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Armstrong's Primer of English History for School and Family Use An opinion has prevailed among able teachers that text-books are, as a rule, too large and too unwieldy. Experience has shown that beginners learn more rapidly and remember the facts much longer from small books containing the salient points of the subject logically arranged. This is especially true of the study of history. The student needs at first a clear, firm outline; and this once acquired, the subsequent fiUing-in can be accomplished with ease and without the aid of an instructor. It is now several years since the author of this little book saw with pleasure the announcement that a Primer of English History was in preparation for the admirable series edited by the late J.R. Green. But the feeling of pleasure was changed to disappointment when the announcement proved to be without foundation. Book Manual of English Literature

Download or read book Manual of English Literature written by N. K. Royse and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of English Literature: Designed for the Use of Schools of Advanced Grades If the matter of the present work shall fail to apologize satisfactorily for its appearance in the already numerous family of manuals of English literature, it is still hoped that the manner in which such matter is presented - the arrangement of the work - will commend it as something unlike and possibly superior to its sister manuals as a normal guide to the student. The author believes that the study of any literature properly begins with the writings of its living authors, and proceeds from these to those of modern, and from modern to those of early authors, the earliest coming last. And he rests his belief in this matter on the indisputable fact that the literature most readily comprehensible to any student is that of his own country and his own age; for the literary atmosphere - the peculiar idioms, the natural surroundings, the moral, aesthetical, social, and political ideas and sentiments - breathed by living, native authors is the same that is breathed by himself. An American student, therefore, should commence his study of literature with the writings of living American authors. This done, the student's next step evidently is to take up the writings of living English authors, and from them, as from its mouth, to ascend the successive levels of the great stream of English literature to its fountain head. To facilitate this accomplishment is the purpose of the present manual. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Epitome of English History: With Questions for Examination This little manual is offered to Teachers and Students of English History, with the hope that it may supply a want which the compiler has found unmet by any of the existing text-books. It is by no means designed to supersede the study of more comprehensive class-books of English History, but merely to act as a hand-maiden to them, by presenting in a condensed form the principal dates and facts which, when once fixed in the memory, will add greatly to the facility and enjoyment of more extended study. It was at first designed to limit the use of this little work solely to the pupils for whom it has been prepared, but the success which has attended its partial application in manuscript has induced its publication, in the hope that it may be profitable to others who are interested in this noble study.
