Book Ten Feet Tall and Not Quite Bulletproof

Download or read book Ten Feet Tall and Not Quite Bulletproof written by Cameron Hardiman and published by Hachette Australia. This book was released on 2020-01-28 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cameron Hardiman lived a life most young boys could only dream of. Every morning he put on a navy blue police flight suit, grabbed his flight helmet, and prepared to work on the police helicopter. He could be called to anything during a shift, to search for a missing child, to pull an injured driver from a wrecked car, or a dangerous sea rescue. He saw his fair share of trauma and dealt with it like most coppers would: he quickly put each dangerous job out of his mind as soon as it was over. But one particular rescue in Bass Strait brought about a reckoning - and Cameron was never the same again. This is the brilliantly told, white-knuckle story of one cop learning every lesson the hard way - and coming to find out that being not quite bulletproof doesn't mean that you're not a good cop.

Book The Elements of Advanced Mathematics Second Edition

Download or read book The Elements of Advanced Mathematics Second Edition written by Steven G. Krantz and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2002-01-18 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gap between the rote, calculational learning mode of calculus and ordinary differential equations and the more theoretical learning mode of analysis and abstract algebra grows ever wider and more distinct, and students' need for a well-guided transition grows with it. For more than six years, the bestselling first edition of this classic text has helped them cross the mathematical bridge to more advanced studies in topics such as topology, abstract algebra, and real analysis. Carefully revised, expanded, and brought thoroughly up to date, the Elements of Advanced Mathematics, Second Edition now does the job even better, building the background, tools, and skills students need to meet the challenges of mathematical rigor, axiomatics, and proofs. New in the Second Edition: Expanded explanations of propositional, predicate, and first-order logic, especially valuable in theoretical computer science A chapter that explores the deeper properties of the real numbers, including topological issues and the Cantor set Fuller treatment of proof techniques with expanded discussions on induction, counting arguments, enumeration, and dissection Streamlined treatment of non-Euclidean geometry Discussions on partial orderings, total ordering, and well orderings that fit naturally into the context of relations More thorough treatment of the Axiom of Choice and its equivalents Additional material on Russell's paradox and related ideas Expanded treatment of group theory that helps students grasp the axiomatic method A wealth of added exercises

Book Primetime Blues

    Book Details:
  • Author : Donald Bogle
  • Publisher : Macmillan + ORM
  • Release : 2015-08-18
  • ISBN : 1466894458
  • Pages : 532 pages

Download or read book Primetime Blues written by Donald Bogle and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2015-08-18 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A landmark study by the leading critic of African American film and television Primetime Blues is the first comprehensive history of African Americans on network television. Donald Bogle examines the stereotypes, which too often continue to march across the screen today, but also shows the ways in which television has been invigorated by extraordinary black performers, whose presence on the screen has been of great significance to the African American community. Bogle's exhaustive study moves from the postwar era of Beulah and Amos 'n' Andy to the politically restless sixties reflected in I Spy and an edgy, ultra-hip program like Mod Squad. He examines the television of the seventies, when a nation still caught up in Vietnam and Watergate retreated into the ethnic humor of Sanford and Son and Good Times and the poltically conservative eighties marked by the unexpected success of The Cosby Show and the emergence of deracialized characters on such dramatic series as L.A. Law. Finally, he turns a critical eye to the television landscape of the nineties, with shows such as The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, I'll Fly Away, ER, and The Steve Harvey Show. Note: The ebook edition does not include photos.

Book Sidney Poitier

Download or read book Sidney Poitier written by Aram Goudsouzian and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2011-01-20 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first full biography of actor Sidney Poitier, Aram Goudsouzian analyzes the life and career of a Hollywood legend, from his childhood in the Bahamas to his 2002 Oscar for lifetime achievement. Poitier is a gifted actor, a great American success story, an intriguing personality, and a political symbol; his life and career illuminate America's racial history. In such films as Lilies of the Field, In the Heat of the Night, and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, Poitier's middle-class, mannered, virtuous screen persona contradicted prevailing film stereotypes of blacks as half-wits, comic servants, or oversexed threats. His screen image and public support of nonviolent integration assuaged the fears of a broad political center, and by 1968, Poitier was voted America's favorite movie star. Through careful readings of every Poitier film, Goudsouzian shows that Poitier's characters often made sacrifices for the good of whites and rarely displayed sexuality. As the only black leading man during the civil rights era, Poitier chose roles and public positions that negotiated the struggle for dignity. By 1970, times had changed and Poitier was the target of a backlash from film critics and black radicals, as the new heroes of "blaxploitation" movies reversed the Poitier model. In the 1970s, Poitier shifted his considerable talents toward directing, starring in, and producing popular movies that employed many African Americans, both on and off screen. After a long hiatus, he returned to starring roles in the late 1980s. More recently, the film industry has reappraised his career, and Poitier has received numerous honors recognizing his multi-faceted work for black equality in Hollywood. As this biography affirms, Poitier remains one of American popular culture's foremost symbols of the possibilities for and limits of racial equality.

Book Words of A Lifetime So Far

Download or read book Words of A Lifetime So Far written by K.M. Kirkpatrick and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014-07-30 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Those are words - only words". This was a comment I once heard in response to another's comments. The response to the responder came back quickly - "words are truly all we have - our words are WHO we are. They are everything." This author could not agree more. In writing "Words Of A Lifetime... So Far", I wanted to do just that - put words out there that reveal our meaning, our substance - that who we are and why we are, is so very important to our happiness in this life. That those things, those places, those people - their faces, (whoops! There I go again ...) are what make the journey that we are all on so very worth it. The only way we truly have to authentically express what that journey means to us and what we mean to each other, is through the WORDS. Our Words. With, full page, color photographs, many of them montages of photos taken around the world, I offer scope and dimension into my poetic works and use the personal stories of my experiences to introduce each poem. I am really excited to offer the experience of essay, poetry and photography for your reading pleasure in a single volume. I believe it will present the poetic genre from a whole new perspective and vision. Above all, I hope it helps us all to connect with each other just a little more. There is no such thing as an ordinary life. We are all extraordinary. All of us... each of us. So here's to US and to The Words Of A Lifetime... So Far. Thanks for visiting. Join me in the journey. What we Read, is Where we Go! KM KM Kirkpatrick or "kPat" for short, is a South Carolina native who resides in the low country haven of James Island in Charleston. A former Air Force member, he has lived throughout the Middle East, Asia and Turkey where many of the photographs from this book were taken. His passion for travel, exploration, language and culture have distilled a desire to write in unifiying themes that illumincate our human experience in ways that teach"beyond the moment". Book excerpt: This is the first book-length study of the 12 films starring African American Renaissance man Paul Robeson (1898-1976). Singer, actor, author, lawyer, athlete, pacifist and civil rights activist, Robeson was also the first African American to receive top billing in motion pictures, delivering unforgettable characterizations in such classics as The Emperor Jones (1933), Sanders of the River (1935), Show Boat (1936) and The Proud Valley (1940). Original research is provided from primary materials housed at the Schomburg Center for Black Culture in Harlem and the FBI archives in Washington, D.C., and from Robeson's family and friends, including his son Paul Robeson, Jr. Two appendices cover Robeson's film work as offscreen narrator and singer and his many stage appearances. Rare illustrations include never-before-published original studio materials.
