Book Between a Man and a Woman

Download or read book Between a Man and a Woman written by Ludger H. Viefhues-Bailey and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a probing investigation of conservative Christianity and its response to an issue that, according to the statistics of conservative Christian groups, affects only a small number of Americans, Ludger Viefhues-Bailey alights on a profound theological conundrum: in today's conservative Christian movement, both sexes are called upon to be at once assertive and submissive, masculine and feminine, not only within the home but also within the church, society, and the state. Therefore the arguments of conservative Christians against same-sex marriage involve more than literal readings of the Bible or nostalgia for simple gender roles. Focusing primarily on texts produced by Focus on the Family, a leading media and ministry organization informing conservative Christian culture, Viefhues-Bailey identifies two distinct ideas of male homosexuality: gender-disturbed and passive; and oversexed, strongly masculine, and aggressive. These homosexualities enable a complex ideal of Christian masculinity in which men are encouraged to be assertive toward the world while also being submissive toward God and family. This web of sexual contradiction influences the flow of power between the sexes and within the state. It joins notions of sexual equality to claims of "natural" difference, establishing a fraught basis for respectable romantic marriage. Heterosexual union is then treated as emblematic of, if not essential to, the success of American political life--yet far from creating gender stability, these tensions produce an endless striving for balance. Viefhues-Bailey's final, brilliant move is to connect the desire for stability to the conservative Christian movement's strategies of political power.

In Man and Woman, One in Christ, Philip Barton Payne answers this question and more, injecting crucial insights into the discussion of Paul’s view of women. Condensing over three decades of research on this topic, Payne’s rigorous exegetical analysis demonstrates the consistency of Paul’s message on this topic and its coherence with the rest of his theology. Payne’s exegetical examination of the Pauline corpus is thorough, exploring the influences on Paul, his practice as a church leader, and his teachings to various Christian communities. Paul’s theology, instruction, and practice consistently affirm the equal standing of men and women, with profound implications for the church today. Includes a new preface, a new conclusion, four updated chapters, and two all-new chapters.

Book When a Woman Loves a Man

Download or read book When a Woman Loves a Man written by James Ford Jr. and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2011-03-01 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a woman loves a man it's like all the cliches you have ever heard. She "stands by her man." He has "sunshine on a cloudy day." She makes him feel like "a natural man." When a woman loves a man you are looking at how Christ loves. She puts his needs before her own. She focuses on what he needs and how he needs it. When a woman loves a man she is his biggest cheerleader and encourager. She will go to great lengths to protect him and promote him. Although Jezebel was definitely an ungodly woman she showed her love for Ahab, even though that love contributed to her death. When a woman loves a man she stands by him against all odds, in front of him against all foes, and behind him to protect his back. The Bible states that God took part of the man's rib and made the woman. This is significant for many reasons, one of which teaches us that the woman's love would be expressed in her protection of her husband emotionally. The ribcage protects the vital organs like the heart and the lungs. Yes, God has made man the physical protector of the woman but He's equaled the playing field by making the woman the emotional protector of the man. It has been said that man is the head, but it is the woman that turns the head. In Titus chapter 2 the older women are to teach the younger women how to love their husbands. When a Woman Loves a Man will explore and explain the characteristics that a woman demonstrates that expresses her love to her man in the way that God intended.

Book Play Like a Man Win Like a Woman

Download or read book Play Like a Man Win Like a Woman written by Gail Evans and published by Crown Currency. This book was released on 2001-09-11 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An honest and practical handbook that reveals important insights into relationships between men and women and work, Play Like a Man, Win Like a Woman, is a must-read for every woman who wants to leverage her power in the workplace. Women make up almost half of today's labor force, but in corporate America they don't share half of the power. Only four of the Fortune 500 company CEOs are women, and it's only been in the last few years that even half of the Fortune 500 companies have more than one female officer. A major reason for this? Most women were never taught how to play the game of business. Throughout her career in the super-competitive, male-dominated media industry, Gail Evans, one of the country's most powerful executives, has met innumerable women who tell her that they feel lost in the workplace, almost as if they were playing a game without knowing the directions. In this book, she reveals the secrets to the playbook of success and teaches women at all levels of the organization--from assistant to vice president--how to play the game of business to their advantage. Men know the rules because they wrote them, but women often feel shut out of the process because they don't know when to speak up, when to ask for responsibility, what to say at an interview, and a lot of other key moves that can make or break a career. Sharing with humor and candor her years of lessons from corporate life, Gail Evans gives readers practical tools for making the right decisions at work. Among the rules you will learn are: • How to Keep Score at Work • When to Take a Risk • How to Deal with the Imposter Syndrome • Ten Vocabulary Words That Mean Different Things to Men and Women • Why Men Can be Ugly, and You Can't • When to Quit Your Job

Book Becoming a Man

Download or read book Becoming a Man written by P. Carl and published by Simon & Schuster. This book was released on 2021-01-26 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “scrupulously honest” (O, The Oprah Magazine) debut memoir that explores one man’s gender transition amid a pivotal political moment in America. Becoming a Man is a “moving narrative [that] illuminates the joy, courage, necessity, and risk-taking of gender transition” (Kirkus Reviews). For fifty years P. Carl lived as a girl and then as a queer woman, building a career, a life, and a loving marriage, yet still waiting to realize himself in full. As Carl embarks on his gender transition, he takes us inside the complex shifts and questions that arise throughout—the alternating moments of arrival and estrangement. He writes intimately about how transitioning reconfigures both his own inner experience and his closest bonds—his twenty-year relationship with his wife, Lynette; his already tumultuous relationships with his parents; and seemingly solid friendships that are subtly altered, often painfully and wordlessly. Carl “has written a poignant and candid self-appraisal of life as a ‘work-of-progress’” (Booklist) and blends the remarkable story of his own personal journey with incisive cultural commentary, writing beautifully about gender, power, and inequality in America. His transition occurs amid the rise of the Trump administration and the #MeToo movement—a transition point in America’s own story, when transphobia and toxic masculinity are under fire even as they thrive in the highest halls of power. Carl’s quest to become himself and to reckon with his masculinity mirrors, in many ways, the challenge before the country as a whole, to imagine a society where every member can have a vibrant, livable life. Here, through this brave and deeply personal work, Carl brings an unparalleled new voice to this conversation.
