Book A Man A Pram

Download or read book A Man A Pram written by Mark Cundy and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2011-06-23 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People travel from London to New York every day - nothing unusual about that, but if your journey took you 14 months, you might rightly wish to seek compensation from the airline! However, Mark Cundy's journey was different; his was a walking odyssey of immense proportions, covering 5,500 miles between October 2004 and December 2005 across three continents, in aid of Cancer Research UK and its overseas equivalents. Facing a lonely, often gruelling trek, Mark encountered many setbacks and obstacles en route: limited resources, accommodation problems, language barriers, extremes of climate, red tape, cultural differences and health issues, and met plenty of ‘angels' and a few ‘devils’ as his journey pressed on through Europe, across Russia and on to Australia and finally the USA. There were many times he stopped to wonder, “What am I doing?” But in true Forrest Gump style, he just kept on walking. This is an extraordinary story, told with immense humour, of true grit and determination against the odds to fulfil a dream that had been many years in the making, one that took the ‘World Walker’ through every gamut of emotion, from fear to triumph and desperation to sheer joy. It was a defining achievement. And to what does the ‘pram’ in the title refer? He didn’t really take a baby with him, did he? Well, you’ll just have to read it and see!

Book excerpt: Andrew 'Cad' Cadigan is the only person to have walked solo around Australia also taking in Tasmania. He trooped 15,000km averaging 43km a day in honour of his mate 'Simmo' who died of a rare blood disorder at age 24. He was 29 when he quit his job, sold his home and, with little preparation, left Sydney two days after Christmas, pushing a pram with his provisions and headed south. In the ensuing 18 months he suffered depression, extreme loneliness and physical pain - at times walking 50km a day in 40 degree-plus heat - but refused to surrender, becoming only the third person to navigate the continent on foot without a support crew. Along the way he endeared himself to hundreds of people from all walks of life, and parts of the world, as he made new friendships almost daily during the expedition he called Oz on Foot. Four days after completing the trek and gaining national recognition, Cad left for Thailand to rest and turn his hand-written diaries into a book on his journey. A month to the day after crossing the finish line on the Sydney Harbour Bridge he suffered horrific injuries in a motor cycle accident, passing away after finally being returned to Australia. Neil Cadigan, a leading author who has penned the memoirs of rugby league Immortals Andrew Johns and Wally Lewis and Yellow Wiggle Greg Page, has completed a vow to his son to finish his book. It is a tragic yet inspirational and emotional story that only a father could adequately tell.

Book excerpt: For the first time in history, a book about pregnancy that men will actually be interested in. The concept for MAN WITH A PRAM was born (excuse the pun) from the authors observations that most men were not interested in the current pregnancy literature on the market. Added to this was the observation that many a pregnant partner seemed to be frustrated by this perceived lack of interest in pregnancy literature. Essentially, the current pregnancy literature isn t interesting for men because it s aimed at women, it s all a bit peaches and cream, a bit preachy, over-serious and well. . . Boring! Let s face it, most men would rather walk over broken glass (or watch sport) than read a book punctuated with fog lensed pictures of smiling pregnant women with chapters entitled How You re Feeling . The authors reasoned that for a pregnancy book to appeal to men it needed to state the facts of pregnancy issues while couching them in humour, science, statistics, trivia and male orientated advice: basically things that men like to read about.

Book The Changes Trilogy

Download or read book The Changes Trilogy written by Peter Dickinson and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2015-01-27 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three dystopian novels by an award-winning author that imagine a world where humankind has suddenly and violently rejected modern technology. Something has gone very wrong in England. In a tunnel beneath Wales one man opens a crack in a mysterious stone wall, and all over the island of Britain people react with horror to perfectly normal machines. Abandoning their cars on the roads and destroying their own factories, many flee the cities for the countryside, where they return to farming and an old-fashioned life. When families are split apart and grown-ups forget how they used to live, young people face unexpected challenges. Nicola Gore survives on her own for nineteen days before she’s taken in by a Sikh family that still remembers how to farm and forge steel by hand. Margaret and Jonathan brave the cold and risk terrible punishment in order to save a man’s life and lift the fog of fear and hate that’s smothering their village. And Geoffrey and his little sister, Sally, escape to France only to be sent back to England on a vital mission: to make their way north to Wales, alone, and find the thing under the stones that shattered civilization—the source of the Changes. Prolific author Peter Dickinson was known for “keeping up a page-turning pace,” and these adventure-packed novels are some of his most important contributions to science fiction (The Guardian). This ebook features an illustrated personal history of Peter Dickinson including rare images from the author’s collection.

Book Esoteric Symbols

Download or read book Esoteric Symbols written by June O. Leavitt and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2007 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this pioneering scholarly work on occult symbols in literature, the reader is offered a vivid look into how W.B. Yeats, T.S. Eliot, and Franz Kafka--three masters of symbolic expression--utilized Tarot cards in their poetry and prose. Focusing on the Tarot's ancient associations with divine knowledge, its pictorial representation of both the Jewish and Christian Cabala, and the Tarot's more recent pedestrian affiliation with the occult, June Leavitt skillfully demonstrates how Yeats, Eliot, and Kafka align themselves in their uniquely individual ways with the Tarot symbols' mapping of reality. Paying close attention to the mystical nuances of the Tarot, Ms. Leavitt shows how Tarot symbols allow for radically new readings of the texts in which they are situated, and play a transformative role in the three writers' search for God. This search remained indecisive for Kafka, resulted in Eliot's conversion to Anglo-Catholicism, and went hand in hand with Yeats' passion for pagan gods and angels. People who read this book made the following comments:- alex 13 April 2011 I found BILLY one of those rare books you read which you cant stop reading but you dont want to finishI hope Bill Green writes a sequel. elpokid 2 May 2011 BILLY What a great read. The book made me realise how hard and cruel life was during and after the war. My only disappointment was that the book had to come to an end. I found myself rationing my reading time just to stretch out the remaining pages. jobgre 9 May 2011 BILLY This book gives a very descriptive account of how life was for evacuees during World War 2. What is also apparent is that life for the author and his brother were not just hard when evacuated, but did not change when they returned to the care of their father and stepmother. An extremely good read which I would recommend
