Alcuni risiedevano stabilmente a Roma, altri vi rimanevano fino al compimento dell’incarico assegnatogli. Armati solitamente di una buona conoscenza del diritto canonico e di una certa fluenza in latino e italiano, nonché di ottime capacità retoriche, dovevano far passare il caso affidatogli attraverso il labirinto della burocrazia papale. Come è cambiato questo ruolo nel XVIII-XX secolo? Gli agenti hanno allora continuato ad avere una funzione cruciale nei rapporti con la Curia Romana, rappresentando gli interessi di comunità e personalità ecclesiastiche e raccogliendo informazioni per queste e per il proprio Stato, oppure il loro lavoro è diventato del tutto invisibile, ripetitivo e amministrativo? Hanno continuato a risiedere nella Città eterna oppure hanno agito da e in altre città pontificie. Inoltre l’attività romana o italiana è stata solo un episodio della loro biografia oppure hanno svolto regolarmente questa funzione, trasformandola in un vero e proprio lavoro trasmesso in famiglia per più generazioni? Qualcuno di loro è riuscito a costruirsi una carriera in patria o a Roma e ha utilizzato a tal scopo la rete di relazioni forgiate come agente?
