Book A Magia de Pensar em Grande

Download or read book A Magia de Pensar em Grande written by David J. Schwartz and published by Leya. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

This book was released on with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: The first time we met was at a party. Your ex arrived to show off the person he'd left you for last month, and you asked me to pretend to be your date. I was more than happy to help. You were attractive, smart and witty--and that kiss we shared? It left me wanting you for days. The second time we met was in my office on campus where we were both surprised to discover you were the new master’s degree student in poetry that I would be working with. You promised to be professional. I did no such thing. The late nights and intense study sessions spent alongside you majorly throw me off my game. I want you, and I fight with myself daily over this fact. I know I'm crass, that my sexual innuendos and dirty mouth annoy you, but I live for those two bright spots of color in your cheeks. If that's the only reaction I can get out of you, I'll gladly take it. You hate Mondays so every Monday I slip an anonymous poem into your bag and your smile gets me through the week. I think I'm falling for you, and I know it's wrong. I know that I'm only supposed to be your adviser and nothing more, but here's the thing. I think you're falling for me too. xo, Zach

Book Notebook of Colonial Memories

Download or read book Notebook of Colonial Memories written by Isabela Figueiredo and published by . This book was released on 2015-05 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Isabela Figueiredo's literary memoir Notebook of Colonial Memories was originally published in Portugal in 2009 as Caderno de Memórias Coloniais. It traces the author's growing up in the 1960s and 70s in Mozambique, which was then still a Portuguese colony, and her "return" at the age of thirteen to Portugal (a country she had never seen) following Mozambique's independence. It offers an uncommonly candid and unsparing perspective on the realities of late Portuguese colonialism in Africa and on the political climate surrounding the "repatriation" to Portugal of hundreds of thousands of former colonial settlers, mainly from Angola and Mozambique. The critical introduction by Anna Klobucka and Phillip Rothwell describes these historical circumstances and contextualizes Figueiredo's text for the English-language reader, as well as commenting on the writer's complex exercise of remembrance, reconstruction and fictionalization of her experience in both Mozambique and Portugal. Keywords: Portuguese colonialism, Mozambique, decolonization, postcolonialism, memoir" --

Download or read book Tomorrow s Child written by Rubem A. Alves and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-05-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All theories of social change, says Alves, rest squarely on the economic and structural forces operative in society at any given moment in history. Thus many of the proposals offered by today's futurologists fall considerably short of social revolution. They are, in effect, extrapolations from the functional matrix of our society. Like the dinosaurs who "disappeared not because they were too weak but because they were too strong," our civilization is motivated less by the desire for internal growth and existential relevance than it is by blind outward expansion. We are determined by a triangle of interlocking systems, each deriving and giving life to the others: the power of the sword, the power of money, and the power of science. In this context, to be a realist is to accept the rules of the game, laid down by the power lords of our "rational" society, whose goals are war, production, and consumption. But the utopian mentality, argues Alves, wants to create a qualitatively new order in which economy must abandon the goal of infinite growth. The only way out, then, is to abort "realism" from the body politic and impregnate it with the power of the imagination. This book clears away the debris of realism and lays the groundwork for a constructive theory of creative imagination, moving us toward new forms of social organization where the community of faith can be found.

Book The Language of Plants

Download or read book The Language of Plants written by Monica Gagliano and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2017-04-25 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eighteenth-century naturalist Erasmus Darwin (grandfather of Charles) argued that plants are animate, living beings and attributed them sensation, movement, and a certain degree of mental activity, emphasizing the continuity between humankind and plant existence. Two centuries later, the understanding of plants as active and communicative organisms has reemerged in such diverse fields as plant neurobiology, philosophical posthumanism, and ecocriticism. The Language of Plants brings together groundbreaking essays from across the disciplines to foster a dialogue between the biological sciences and the humanities and to reconsider our relation to the vegetal world in new ethical and political terms. Viewing plants as sophisticated information-processing organisms with complex communication strategies (they can sense and respond to environmental cues and play an active role in their own survival and reproduction through chemical languages) radically transforms our notion of plants as unresponsive beings, ready to be instrumentally appropriated. By providing multifaceted understandings of plants, informed by the latest developments in evolutionary ecology, the philosophy of biology, and ecocritical theory, The Language of Plants promotes the freedom of imagination necessary for a new ecological awareness and more sustainable interactions with diverse life forms. Download or read book Children as Citizens written by Cathie Holden and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The social, moral and cultural development of children is a central concern for all schools. This book, which draws on the voices of children and practising teachers, demonstrates how such development can be promoted through children's readiness to discuss, debate and actively participate as young citizens. The various contributors, from Britain, other European countries and Australia, show how teachers can, as part of this process, develop young people's understanding of social justice, global responsibility, human rights, and, particularly, the rights of the child. In addition, contributors offer a critical appraisal of citizenship education with regard to such issues as disability, economics, the environment, racism and power sharing in schools. The book is thus timely, supporting teachers in the education of children for life as responsible adults, with social skills and values appropriate for the twenty-first century.
