Book excerpt: Musings of a Madman is a compilation of poetry stretching from a meager existence in New York's East Village, with Allen Ginsberg and other such poets to Paris, and environs and finally Colombia. The poems sketch a life style of a lonely man to a final relationship with Adriana, muse, Colombian Princessa and finally wife and a life in Westchester as a jazz musician and poet. It is an dilemma of the very guts of the creative mind with its madness, its hunger its suffering, culminating in a crescendo within existence where the end justify the means. The poems are extremely diverse, some easygoing, some serious, most devouring the beauty of life and its prize and pain, yet all capturing the verve and passion of Greenwich Village in the early 60's.

Book Meditations of a Madman

Download or read book Meditations of a Madman written by Brian K. Woodson, Sr. and published by . This book was released on 2006-08-01 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To embrace the hope of some sense of the presence of God in the midst of benign persecution and overt degradation is to walk a jagged edge along a precipice, whose chasm is insanity. And yet there are those of us who make these often-solitary journeys in silence, with little medication, no adulation, and a naked hope of Divine vindication, which would bring eternal acceptance and appreciation. I am such a one. What follows is the result of a search for a sight of God through the lens prescribed by the paradox of life. It is sent to you in hope that together we might catch a glimpse of glory, that we may transcend the dimensions of torment, and, if only in snatches, to bask in freedom while yet alive. As you contemplatively read, may your life be changed in ways that inspire you to endure the hardships of your lives with hope. May you become more intimate with and dependent on Christ, as well as introspective in ways that make you generous to others.

Book excerpt: A captivating and evocative work, Memoirs of a Madman is one of Flaubert's earliest writings, and forms the basis for his highly renowned L'Education Sentimentale. As a young man looks back on the years that have brought him to "madness," he recalls the innocence of his boyhood and his fond belief that he was blessed with a mind of genius. Yet, painfully, wretchedly, he also recounts his all-too-sudden entry into the adult world. For the day he caught sight of a beautiful woman by the sea marked the end of his flamboyant philosophizing, and the beginning of a tragic coming of age.

Still to this day answers vary greatly depending on the worldview. Solomon, the wisest king in Israel's history, set all his energies to search for the ultimate meaning of life under the sun. His conclusions may shock and surprise you--vanity, chasing after the wind, absurdity, vanishing smoke. Are these the musings of a genius or of a mad man? If you are looking for a candy-coated appraisal of life then go ahead and put this book down. However, if you are looking for a no-frills, brutally honest, ragged-edged assessment of reality, then you have discovered an indispensable volume. In Journal of a Mad Man, pastor and author Derrick McCarson will carefully guide readers verse by verse through Solomon's meditations recorded in the Old Testament book of wisdom--Ecclesiastes. Not only will readers attempt to plumb the depths of some of mankind's most vexing questions, but they will also discover Solomon's secrets for wise living in a warped world.

Download or read book The Madman s Middle Way written by Donald S. Lopez Jr. and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gendun Chopel is considered the most important Tibetan intellectual of the twentieth century. His life spanned the two defining moments in modern Tibetan history: the entry into Lhasa by British troops in 1904 and by Chinese troops in 1951. Recognized as an incarnate lama while he was a child, Gendun Chopel excelled in the traditional monastic curriculum and went on to become expert in fields as diverse as philosophy, history, linguistics, geography, and tantric Buddhism. Near the end of his life, before he was persecuted and imprisoned by the government of the young Dalai Lama, he would dictate the Adornment for Nagarjuna’s Thought, a work on Madhyamaka, or “Middle Way,” philosophy. It sparked controversy immediately upon its publication and continues to do so today. The Madman’s Middle Way presents the first English translation of this major Tibetan Buddhist work, accompanied by an essay on Gendun Chopel’s life liberally interspersed with passages from his writings. Donald S. Lopez Jr. also provides a commentary that sheds light on the doctrinal context of the Adornment and summarizes its key arguments. Ultimately, Lopez examines the long-standing debate over whether Gendun Chopel in fact is the author of the Adornment; the heated critical response to the work by Tibetan monks of the Dalai Lama’s sect; and what the Adornment tells us about Tibetan Buddhism’s encounter with modernity. The result is an insightful glimpse into a provocative and enigmatic workthatwill be of great interest to anyone seriously interested in Buddhism or Asian religions.

Book Gustave Flaubert

Download or read book Gustave Flaubert written by William J. Berg and published by Macmillan Reference USA. This book was released on 1997 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William J. Berg and Laurey K. Martin offer a complete overview of Flaubert's fiction, from the early pieces to the major works: Madame Bovary, Salammbo, Sentimental Education, The Temptation of Saint Anthony, Three Tales, and Bouvard and Pecuchet. Through detailed readings based on stylistic and thematic analyses, the authors show how in each work Flaubert develops new literary forms and techniques that enable him to explore problems that plague humankind in a world devoid of sense and structure. In their thorough study, Berg and Martin consider many of the critical approaches applied to Flaubert's works in order to add new perspectives. Their cogent examination of the novelist's own innovative theories about literature demonstrates how Flaubert inaugurated new ways of reading the novel. In answer to the question "Why Read Flaubert?" underlying this study, Berg and Martin contend that Flaubert's writings present an uncannily modern painting of the human condition and confirm the redemptive power of art in dealing with the problems that beset humankind.
