Book excerpt: I watch from the shadows of trees against the cars lining the street. Invisible to the three I keep under my anger filled glare. Dressed in black, I have the hood of my zip-up hoodie pulled over my head and drawn closed as I fade into the afternoon shadows to observe and plan my revenge. They probably wouldn't recognize me if they did see me standing here. I've changed a lot over the past nine years and I'm no longer the slightly chubby kid who wore overalls or t-shirts and jeans everyday of the week until I was thirteen and everything changed. Everything. When my best friends became my worst enemies.I watch as Seamus, Hayden, and Axel laugh and joke around in their front yard and toss a football back and forth between one another. We're only a five minute walk from the college we all attend, a college I just transferred to mid semester of our senior year. They don't know I'm here and that's the way I want to keep it for a little bit longer. I patiently watch, waiting for them to leave for the football game so I can begin my plan.I will get my revenge. Barretta Dawn Bowers thought she had the three best friends in the whole world. There was nothing and no one that could come between them. Never in a million years did she think that they would be the reason for their friendship to be torn apart and her heart to break. Having moved to Florida with her aunt when her whole life had been turned upside down it isn't until nine years of being gone and a family emergency calls her home does she return to Oklahoma. Transferring to the local college and moving into an apartment close to campus with her best friend who tagged along for support, old memories and anger start rising to the surface when she soon finds herself face to face with her ex-friends turned enemies. To keep her mind off the troubles at home she begins to plot the revenge she promised herself so long ago.*Trigger Warnings*This Contemporary college-age romance is a medium/fast burn RH and contains several themes that readers should be aware of: swearing (shocking, I know), flashbacks of bullying, present revenge, and sexual themes suitable for 18+

Book Losing It

  • Author : William Ian Miller
  • Publisher : Yale University Press

  • ISBN : 0300178379
  • Pages : 381 pages

Download or read book Losing It written by William Ian Miller and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-25 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Losing It, William Ian Miller brings his inimitable wit and learning to the subject of growing old: too old to matter, of either rightly losing your confidence or wrongly maintaining it, culpably refusing to face the fact that you are losing it. The “it” in Miller’s “losing it” refers mainly to mental faculties—memory, processing speed, sensory acuity, the capacity to focus. But it includes other evidence as well—sags and flaccidities, aches and pains, failing joints and organs. What are we to make of these tell-tale signs? Does growing old gracefully mean more than simply refusing unseemly cosmetic surgeries? How do we face decline and the final drawing of the blinds? Will we know if and when we have lingered too long?Drawing on a lifetime of deep study and anxious observation, Miller enlists the wisdom of the ancients to confront these vexed questions head on. Debunking the glossy new image of old age that has accompanied the graying of the Baby Boomers, he conjures a lost world of aging rituals—complaints, taking to bed, resentments of one’s heirs, schemes for taking it with you or settling up accounts and scores—to remind us of the ongoing dilemmas of old age. Darkly intelligent and sublimely written, this exhilarating and eccentric book will raise the spirits of readers, young and old.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating look at history's losers-the myths they create to cope with defeat and the steps they take never to be vanquished again History may be written by the victors, Wolfgang Schivelbusch argues in his brilliant and provocative book, but the losers often have the final word. Focusing on three seminal cases of modern warfare-the South after the Civil War, France in the wake of the Franco-Prussian War, and Germany following World War I-Schivelbusch reveals the complex psychological and cultural reactions of vanquished nations to the experience of military defeat. Drawing on responses from every level of society, Schivelbusch shows how conquered societies question the foundations of their identities and strive to emulate the victors: the South to become a "better North," the French to militarize their schools on the Prussian model, the Germans to adopt all things American. He charts the losers' paradoxical equation of military failure with cultural superiority as they generate myths to glorify their pasts and explain their losses: the nostalgic "plantation legend" after the fall of the Confederacy; the cult of Joan of Arc in vanquished France; the fiction of the stab in the back by "foreign" elements in postwar Germany. From cathartic epidemics of "dance madness" to the revolutions that so often follow battlefield humiliation, Schivelbusch finds remarkable similarities across cultures. Eloquently and vibrantly told, The Culture of Defeat is a tour de force that opens new territory for historical inquiry.

Book The Emotions of Protest

    Book Details:
  • Author : James M. Jasper
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2018-05-24
  • ISBN : 022656181X
  • Pages : 295 pages

Download or read book The Emotions of Protest written by James M. Jasper and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2018-05-24 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Donald Trump’s America, protesting has roared back into fashion. The Women’s March, held the day after Trump’s inauguration, may have been the largest in American history, and resonated around the world. Between Trump’s tweets and the march’s popularity, it is clear that displays of anger dominate American politics once again. There is an extensive body of research on protest, but the focus has mostly been on the calculating brain—a byproduct of structuralism and cognitive studies—and less on the feeling brain. James M. Jasper’s work changes that, as he pushes the boundaries of our present understanding of the social world. In The Emotions of Protest, Jasper lays out his argument, showing that it is impossible to separate cognition and emotion. At a minimum, he says, we cannot understand the Tea Party or Occupy Wall Street or pro- and anti-Trump rallies without first studying the fears and anger, moral outrage, and patterns of hate and love that their members feel. This is a book centered on protest, but Jasper also points toward broader paths of inquiry that have the power to transform the way social scientists picture social life and action. Through emotions, he says, we are embedded in a variety of environmental, bodily, social, moral, and temporal contexts, as we feel our way both consciously and unconsciously toward some things and away from others. Politics and collective action have always been a kind of laboratory for working out models of human action more generally, and emotions are no exception. Both hearts and minds rely on the same feelings racing through our central nervous systems. Protestors have emotions, like everyone else, but theirs are thinking hearts, not bleeding hearts. Brains can feel, and hearts can think.

Book Society of Fear

  • Author : Heinz Bude
  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons
  • Release : 2017-12-08
  • ISBN : 150951953X
  • Pages : 160 pages

Download or read book Society of Fear written by Heinz Bude and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-12-08 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the rise of terrorism to the uncertainties associated with economic crisis and recession, our age is characterized by fear. Fear is the expression of a society on unstable foundations. Most of us feel that our social status is under threat and our future prospects in jeopardy. We are overwhelmed by a sense of having been catapulted into a world to which we no longer belong. Tracing this experience of fear, Heinz Bude uncovers a society marked by disturbing uncertainty, suppressed anger and quiet resentment. This is as true in our close relationships as it is in the world of work, in how we react to politicians as much as in our attitudes towards bankers and others in the financial sector. Bude shows how this fear is not derived so much from a 'powerful other' but rather from the seemingly endless range of possibilities which we face. While this may seem to offer us greater autonomy and freedom, in reality the unknown impact and meaning of each option creates a vacuum which is filled by fear. What conditions lead people to feel anxious and fearful for themselves and others? How can individuals withstand fear and develop ways of making their fears intelligible? Probing these and other questions, Bude provides a fresh analysis of some of the most fundamental features of our societies today.
