Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Confession, or the Dogma of Confession Vindicated From the Attacks of Heretics and Infidels To the objections of the young lawyer, Father Guil lois replied in a series of letters, which originally were not intended for publication. He begins by demonstrating that confession was always in use, especially among the Jews; that it was in use also amongst the pagans; that it was instituted by Our Saviour; that it has always been practised in the Church, both in the West, and amongst the schismaticsof the East. He demonstrates from reason that it was impossible for men to establish confession, and, finally, shows the utility of this divine institution and refutes the objections advanced against it. Book An Examination Into the Doctrine and Practice of Confession Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Examination Into the Doctrine and Practice of Confession Classic Reprint written by William Edward Jelf and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Examination Into the Doctrine and Practice of Confession I have not sufficient reliance on myself to put forth a work upon Confession at the present moment, without expressing a hope that any auguries which I may entertain of its acceptance may be realised only so far as the views it contains are in harmony with God's Word and Will; that if, contrary to my own firm conviction, it be otherwise, it may be overruled so as to be of none effect; and with this hope, or rather prayer, I commit it to the judgment of my readers and God's good Providence. I have thought it best not to load my pages with numerous references to patristic books (not on the shelves of ordinary libraries) in support of facts, the authorities for which can be found almost exhaustively, certainly abundantly and sufficiently, in the pages of such works as Bingham and Usher, and the note in the translation of Tertullian in the Library of the Fathers. I have, therefore, referred my readers to these books, where they will find not only references to the original works, but generally full length quotations of the passages referred to. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Seal of History, Vol. 2: Our Inheritance in the Great Seal of "Manasseh," the United States of America; Its History and Heraldry; And Its Signification Unto "the Great People" Thus Sealed The Great Seal of the United States of America is as consummate a piece of Armorie as any blazonry that has ever been displayed among the nations. All Of its elements are homogeneous and, when conceived and realized correctly, their natural harmony is quite above any adverse criticism, whether it be taken from an artistic or an heraldic point of View. In the mean time, its perfect balance and comprehensive symbol ogy are so natural as to unite the exoteric and eso teric things involved into a perfect concert of Signifi cance adapted to all degrees of appreciation. As a matter of fact, it is such a compendium of truth, and so inexhaustible a teacher along all fundamental lines, that to some extent it is always understood at sight. We merely anticipate the assent of our readers to these averments, and furthermore, are satisfied that they will rise from the investigation to which we now invite their attention as fully convinced as we our selves are that t/zis Instrument Which we have imber ited from our ancestors is quite as remarkable from every point of View as if it actually purported to have come to us through direct Revelation unto them. Download or read book The Dark Box written by John Cornwell and published by Basic Books (AZ). This book was released on 2014-03-04 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confession is a crucial ritual of the Catholic Church, offering absolution of sin and spiritual guidance to the faithful. Yet this ancient sacrament has also been a source of controversy and oppression, culminating, as prize-winning historian John Cornwell reveals in The Dark Box, with the scandal of clerical child abuse. Drawing on extensive historical sources, contemporary reports, and first-hand accounts, Cornwell takes a hard look at the long evolution of confession. The papacy made annual, one-on-one confession obligatory for the first time in the 13th century. In the era that followed, confession was a source of spiritual consolation as well as sexual and mercenary scandal. During the 16th century, the Church introduced the confession box to prevent sexual solicitation of women, but this private space gave rise to new forms of temptation, both for penitents and confessors. Yet no phase in the story of the sacrament has had such drastic consequences as a historic decree by Pope Pius X in 1910. In reaction to the spiritual perils of the new century, Pius sought to safeguard the Catholic faithful by lowering the age at which children made their first confession from their early teens to seven, while exhorting all Catholics to confess frequently instead of annually. This sweeping, inappropriately early imposition of the sacrament gave priests an unprecedented and privileged role in the lives of young boys and girls—a role that a significant number would exploit in the decades that followed. A much-needed account of confession’s fraught history, The Dark Box explores the sources of the sacrament’s harm and shame, while recognizing its continuing power to offer consolation and reconciliation.
