One way students can gain such preparation is through exposure to work, which can come in two main forms: student-found employment and work-based learning experiences provided by a student's high school. Studies suggest that part-time work during high school is negatively associated with academic outcomes but positively associated with employment outcomes, while work-based learning participation is generally associated with positive academic and employment outcomes. Little research has considered the two types of work experience concurrently. I use data from the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002, a nationally representative sample of high school students in the United States, to compare students from the same high schools who participate in student-found work, work-based learning, and both activities to students who do not participate in either work experience. I examine the relationship between participation during the sophomore year of high school and academic and employment outcomes two years after high school (dropout status, postsecondary school attendance, postsecondary school persistence, employment, and wages). I find little evidence of an interaction between the two types of work experience.

Book excerpt: The National Education Longitudinal Studies (nels) program is a long-term effort that now encompasses the educational experience of youth from three decades, the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. The nels program studies the educational, vocational, and personal development of students at various grade levels, and the personal, familial, social, institutional, and cultural factors that may affect that development. The nels program currently consists of three major studies: (1) the National Longitudinal Study of the High School Class of 1972 (nls-72); (2) High School and Beyond (hs & b); and (3) the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988 (nels:88). This monograph discusses opportunities for drawing comparisons across the cohorts that comprise the three studies, as well as some of the differences in survey content and design that may limit the possibilities of drawing valid comparisons. The focus is on high school transcripts. When transcript information is coupled with other data about students, it permits the specification of complex models of educational processes and the measurement of high school program and course effects on post-high school outcomes. Comparison of transcript information among the three studies means attention to issues of content comparability and sample design. Content comparability is discussed in the "crosswalks" that form the final section of this report, and design comparability is discussed in some detail. Some other difference of note among the studies are discussed, but their general designs were quite similar. The attached crosswalks cover student-level and course-level comparisons. Book excerpt: The National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988 (NELS:88) is the third in a series of longitudinal studies sponsored by the National Center for Education Statistics. The NELS:88 is being conducted in several waves, beginning with a base year experience of approximately 25,000 eighth graders. This report profiles the family characteristics and the level of involvement reported by the parents of 1988 eighth graders, using the base year survey and dropout data from the first follow-up. About 93 percent of the parents of the first year sample were interviewed to provide information about home life and family experiences. The parent component is not, however, a representative sample of eighth graders' parents. Their inclusion is linked to the student participants. This study examined child-directed involvement, including activities such as parent-child discussions and school-directed involvement such as parent-teacher association membership and volunteering in the school. There was some indication that parent involvement was related to whether or not students scored below the basic level in reading or mathematics proficiency, but there was a strong relationship between parent involvement and whether or not a student dropped out of school between the 8th and 10th grades. There are 26 tables and 18 figures presenting study findings. (SLD)

Using data from the IEA’s Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) conducted between 1995 and 2015, it investigates grade four and grade eight data to assess trends in key teacher characteristics (experience, education, preparedness, and professional development) and teacher behaviors (instructional time and instructional content), and how these relate to student outcomes. Taking advantage of national curriculum data collected by TIMSS to assess changes in curricular strategy across countries and how these may be related to changes in teacher and student factors, the study focuses on the distributional impact of curriculum and instruction on students, paying particular attention to overall inequalities and variations in socioeconomic status at the student and country level, and how such factors have altered over time. Multiple methods, including regression and fixed effects analyses, and structural equation modelling, establish the evolution of these associations over time.
