Book A Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Growth

Download or read book A Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Growth written by John M.H. Buckler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Growth reports the findings of a longitudinal study of the growth of 200 schoolboys and 100 schoolgirls through the course of adolescence. As well as height and weight, about a dozen other physical measures were studied or related to each other and to the staging of sexual characteristics. These values are analysed according to both the chronological age and age based on a common pubertal characteristic of peak height velocity. The range of magnitude and timing of pubertal events is described and compared for boys and girls. These recent data are compared with previous European and North American longitudinal studies, notably those of Tanner conducted over 20 years ago. In addition new information is provided which contrasts growth of two large cohorts of boys in different geographical and social settings, and compares the growth patterns of thin and exogenously obese subjects and of early and later maturers.

Book Adolescent Development

Download or read book Adolescent Development written by Wim Meeus and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking book provides students and researchers with a unique overview of the longitudinal study of the development of young people from the ages of 12 to 25. It offers a comprehensive introduction into the multiple theories on the development of the self, personal relationships and psychopathology in adolescence, alongside a non-statistical overview of the many longitudinal models used to study development. The book includes key topics such as the development of the self, adolescent identity and personality; the development of parent-adolescent relationships; friendships and the understanding of others; and the development of psychosocial problems such as anxiety, depression, delinquency, aggression, and substance use. Meeus highlights multiple findings showing how these processes are integrated and identifies eight fundamental patterns of adolescent development to help determine why most adolescents develop into mature and organized individuals towards the end of this life stage, whilst a substantial minority show an inability to mature. It is essential reading for graduate students and researchers in adolescent development and anyone seeking to use longitudinal research methodology in the social and behavioral sciences.

Download or read book The Promise of Adolescence written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-07-26 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescenceâ€"beginning with the onset of puberty and ending in the mid-20sâ€"is a critical period of development during which key areas of the brain mature and develop. These changes in brain structure, function, and connectivity mark adolescence as a period of opportunity to discover new vistas, to form relationships with peers and adults, and to explore one's developing identity. It is also a period of resilience that can ameliorate childhood setbacks and set the stage for a thriving trajectory over the life course. Because adolescents comprise nearly one-fourth of the entire U.S. population, the nation needs policies and practices that will better leverage these developmental opportunities to harness the promise of adolescenceâ€"rather than focusing myopically on containing its risks. This report examines the neurobiological and socio-behavioral science of adolescent development and outlines how this knowledge can be applied, both to promote adolescent well-being, resilience, and development, and to rectify structural barriers and inequalities in opportunity, enabling all adolescents to flourish.

Book Socioemotional Development and Health from Adolescence to Adulthood

Download or read book Socioemotional Development and Health from Adolescence to Adulthood written by Lea Pulkkinen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-07-03 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2006 book is based on two longitudinal studies of behavior development, both conducted in Finland, a living laboratory setting for longitudinal research. Much of the book reports results from a longitudinal study begun in Jyväskylä, Finland, in 1968, when its participants were school children. This longitudinal study is complemented by two Finnish twin-family studies, with parallel measures and overlapping aims, to yield insights into genetic and environmental sources of variation in early development and later outcomes. An array of findings from the two sets of longitudinal studies are presented, set within a theoretical framework of socioemotional development, and focused on both individual and familial predictors of health-related outcomes from childhood to early adulthood. Many contributors to this edited volume represent a second-tier of Finnish-USA collaborators. They analyzed data from the longitudinal studies as part of their advanced training, and their contributions to the book report results of such analyses.

Download or read book Protecting Youth at Work written by National Research Council and Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1998-11-18 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Massachusetts, a 12-year-old girl delivering newspapers is killed when a car strikes her bicycle. In Los Angeles, a 14-year-old boy repeatedly falls asleep in class, exhausted from his evening job. Although children and adolescents may benefit from working, there may also be negative social effects and sometimes danger in their jobs. Protecting Youth at Work looks at what is known about work done by children and adolescents and the effects of that work on their physical and emotional health and social functioning. The committee recommends specific initiatives for legislators, regulators, researchers, and employers. This book provides historical perspective on working children and adolescents in America and explores the framework of child labor laws that govern that work. The committee presents a wide range of data and analysis on the scope of youth employment, factors that put children and adolescents at risk in the workplace, and the positive and negative effects of employment, including data on educational attainment and lifestyle choices. Protecting Youth at Work also includes discussions of special issues for minority and disadvantaged youth, young workers in agriculture, and children who work in family-owned businesses.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique observational long-term study In a long follow-up period of 23 years about 600 teenagers were observed till their young adult age in order to investigate the longitudinal relationship between health and lifestyles considering physical activity, diet, smoking and alcohol consumption. Longitudinal studies with a follow-up lasting for a quarter of a century are very rare and the Amsterdam Growth and Health Longitudinal Study (AGAHLS) is indeed unique among them. The focus is multidisciplinary and involves both physical and psychological determinants in relation to a wide range of health outcomes. The multiple measurements were carefully standardized in nine waves of data collection, thus producing a high-quality data set, which has been analyzed by the application of advanced statistical techniques. The monograph provides not only an overview of 23 years of follow-up, it also summarizes over 200 scientific publications and 10 PhD theses. This publication is especially recommended to investigators planning longitudinal research, to health workers, and to authorities who like to implement health promotional activities in their community.
