Book Maternal Employment and Children s Development

Download or read book Maternal Employment and Children s Development written by Adele Eskeles Gottfried and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a review written in 1979, I noted that there was a paucity of research examining the effects of maternal employment on the infant and young child and also that longitudinal studies of the effects of maternal em ployment were needed (Hoffman, 1979). In the last 10 years, there has been a flurry of research activity focused on the mother's employment during the child's early years, and much of this work has been longi tudinal. All of the studies reported in this volume are at least short-term longitudinal studies, and most of them examine the effects of maternal employment during the early years. The increased focus on maternal employment during infancy is not a response to the mandate of that review but rather reflects the new employment patterns in the United States. In March 1985, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that 49.4% of married women with children less than a year old were employed outside the home (Hayghe, 1986). This figure is up from 39% in 1980 and more than double the rate in 1970. By now, most mothers of children under 3 are in the labor force.

Book excerpt: Despite the pervasive changes that have taken place in women’s lives in the past twenty-five years--increased participation in the labor force, the attainment of higher levels of education, and higher salaries--comparable changes in the division of family labor and in the roles of men have lagged considerably. In this timely book, the editors and other experts in feminism and family studies examine the effects of two decades of influence by the women’s movement on sex roles and child rearing. While applauding some positive changes, the contributors point to powerful forces of resistance to equality between the sexes, especially “the question of family”--the fear of depriving children of maternal attachment and the belief that working mothers are placing their own interests above those of other family members--as an issue that, until fully addressed, prevents genuine equality between the sexes.

Book The Changing Composition of the Workforce

Download or read book The Changing Composition of the Workforce written by Albert S. Glickman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Annual Scientist-Practitioner Conferences in Industrial Organizational Psychology were conceived by the Department of Psychology at Old Dominion University as a means to foster exchange of information, points of view, and insights among those who are engaged in research in the behavioral and social sciences, and those who, in various business, industrial, managerial, organizational, and educational roles, are actively engaged in work affording opportun ities to apply the findings and concepts generated by scientific study (many people do both). Our vested interest and our hope is that the stimulus provided by these exchanges will help us and our professional cohorts in psychology and other disciplines to advance the cutting edge of theory and application in problem areas of present and prospective importance. The first of these conferences took place in 1980, and had as its theme, "Performance Appraisal. " The papers here constitute the substantive contributions to the second conference which addressed issues pertinent to "The Changing Composition of the Workforce. " It should be noted that although industrial-organizational psychologists continue to claim parentage, this meeting can lay claim to an interdisciplinary lineage, validated by the presence on its panels and among the other invited participants of economists, labor officials, educators, personnel administrators, gerontolo gists, sociologists, business managers, and military officers, as well as others of unknown origins.

Download or read book Changes in Sex Role Behaviors Sex Role Attitudes and Marital Quality written by Esther Susan Schlessinger and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study proposes an integrative model of changes in sex role behaviors (employment, parent roles, and household labor roles), sex role attitudes (attitudes about women's roles), and marital quality. Separate path analyses of 729 married women and 467 married men from an 8 year longitudinal survey is used to test whether changes in: (a) egalitarian sex role behaviors are associated with egalitarian changes in sex role attitude, (b) changes in sex role behaviors and attitudes are associated with changes in marital quality, and, (c) whether a change in sex role attitude mediates the relationships between changes in sex role behaviors and changes in marital quality.

Book How Entry Into Parenthood Shapes Gender Role Attitudes

Download or read book How Entry Into Parenthood Shapes Gender Role Attitudes written by and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attitudes of women and men about how paid and unpaid work should be divided in the couple largely determine women's earnings and career prospects. Hence, it is important to understand how people's gender role attitudes are formed and evolve over the lifetime. In this paper, we concentrate on one of the most path-breaking events in life: becoming a parent. Using longitudinal panel data for the UK, we first show that, in general, entry into parenthood significantly shifts women's attitudes toward more conservative views, while leaving men unaffected. We also show that the impact on women emerges only after some time from the childbirth, suggesting that attitudes change relatively slowly over time and do not react immediately after becoming a parent. Finally, we show that the impact gets large and strongly significant for women and men whose prenatal attitudes were progressive. In particular, we find that the change in attitudes for such individuals increases as the postnatal arrangements are more likely to be traditional. Overall, these findings suggest that the change in attitudes is mainly driven by the emergence of a cognitive dissonance. Broad policy implications are drawn.

Book Status Enhancement and Fertility

Download or read book Status Enhancement and Fertility written by John D. Kasarda and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Status Enhancement and Fertility: Reproductive Responses to Social Mobility and Educational Opportunity provides a theoretical framework in which research findings on the socioeconomic determinants of fertility may be integrated. Starting with an introductory chapter on the substantive scope of the book, separate chapters provide a detailed review, appraisal, and synthesis of the complex research literature on social mobility and fertility; examine various statistical methodologies and suggest some fruitful avenues future research might pursue; and discuss the role of education in enhancing the status of women and the main intervening variables that link education to reproductive behavior. Subsequent chapters examines female labor force participation, the value of children, infant and child mortality, age at marriage and first birth, and family planning knowledge and practice. The final chapter discusses policy issues derived from models and assessments presented in the preceding chapters. This book may be used as an upper division or graduate level text in population courses.

Book Women s Changing Roles at Home and on the Job

Download or read book Women s Changing Roles at Home and on the Job written by United States. National Commission for Manpower Policy and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report contains proceedings of a 1978 conference on women's changing roles, based on data collected from a national longitudinal survey (begun in 1967 and still continuing) of 5,000 women aged 30-44. The keynote address was presented by Secretary of Labor Raymond Marshall, who noted the need for research to influence government policy. Papers delivered during the conference focused on four areas: (1) information available from the national longitudinal survey; (2) work and family roles--conflict and resolution, including sex-role attitudes and employment among women, women's employment, income, and family dissolution, and the economic consequences of marital dissolution; (3) how women fare in the labor market; and (4) how sociological research can be used by policymakers in government. A summary of conference proceedings and themes by Isabel V. Sawhill is included. Appendixes contain the conference agenda and a list of conference participants and attendees. (KC).
