Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an ongoing battle between good and evil. The first battle was in the bible when Lucifer attempted to overthrow God and become a god himself. This resulted in him being banished from heaven along with one-third of the angels. Bring this event up to modern times and you have the story in this book. Dr. Allman, a gifted chemist and scientist and a righteous man, develops a serum that improves the mind and moral fiber of mankind and seeks to distribute it. He has a jealous employee named Lyle, who is a graduate of MIT, and also gifted in science. Lyle's goal is to overthrow Dr. Allman and take control of his laboratory in the World Trade Center during the 1970's. He accomplishes this by tainting the serum to cast a shadow of incompetence on Dr. Allman and his staff. His plan works and he becomes the President of Infinity Laboratories only to be fired when his diabolical plan is uncovered. Lyle and his ex-porn star wife sets about to start up their own lab and they join the Satanist Church. Fast-forward to 2001 when Lyle and Polly's world collapses on September 11. Next, go with Lyle through a literal hell and go with his nemesis, Emmanuel (Dr. Allman's son) in heaven. Be with them when they both are returned to earth for a final confrontation.

Download or read book At the End of Darwin Road written by Fiona Kidman and published by Penguin Random House New Zealand Limited. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An evocative memoir about the emergence of a pre-eminent writer in a changing world 'What I have to tell is largely a personal narrative about how I came to inhabit a fictional world' This absorbing memoir explores the first half of writer Fiona Kidman's life, notably in Kerikeri amid the 'sharp citric scent of orange groves, bright heat and . . . the shadow of Asia' - at the end of Darwin Road. From the distance of France, where Kidman spent time as the Katherine Mansfield Fellow in Menton, she reconsiders the past, weaving personal reflection and experience with the history of the places where she lived, particularly the fascinating northern settlements of Kerikeri and Waipu, and further south the cities of Rotorua and Wellington. Her story crosses paths with those of numerous different New Zealanders, from the Tuhoe prophet Rua Kenana, to descendants of the migration from Scotland led by a charismatic Presbyterian minister, to other writers and significant friends. We learn of Kidman's struggles to establish herself as a writer and to become part of different communities, and how each worked their way into her fiction. At the End of Darwin Road is a vivid memoir of place and family, and of becoming a writer: 'I was certain that . . . I would continue to write, if possible, every day of my life.'

Download or read book The Sharp End of Life written by Dierdre Wolownick and published by Mountaineers Books. This book was released on 2019-04-01 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wife and mother. Teacher and musician. Marathoner and rock climber. At 66, Dierdre Wolownick-Honnold became the oldest woman to climb El Capitan in Yosemite--and in The Sharp End of Life: A Mother’s Story, she shares her intimate journey, revealing how her climbing achievement reflects a broader story of courage and persistence. Dierdre grew up under the watchful eyes of a domineering mother and realized early on that her parents’ plans for her future weren’t what she wanted for herself. Later, what seemed like a storybook romance brought escape, with new experiences and eye-opening travel, but she quickly discovered that her husband was not the happy-go-lucky man he had first appeared. Adapting as best she could, Dierdre juggled work and raising two young children, encouraging them to be fearlessly confident. She noted with delight how her “little lady” Stasia took it upon herself to look out for her baby brother, and watched in amazement as Alex (Honnold of "Free Solo" fame) started climbing practically before he could crawl. After years of struggle in her marriage and her ultimate divorce, Dierdre found inspiration in her now-adult children’s passions, as well as new depths within herself. At Stasia’s urging, she took up running at age 54 and soon completed several marathons. Then at age 58, Alex led her on her first rock climbs. A world of friendship and support suddenly opened up to her within the climbing “tribe,” culminating in her record-setting ascent of El Cap with her son. From confused young wife and busy but lonely mother to confident middle-aged athlete, Dierdre brings the reader along as she finds new strength, happiness, and community in the outdoors--and a life of learning, acceptance, and spirit.

Download or read book The Old Man from Leftfield written by Neil McKee and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014-10-17 with total page 717 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I was a kid in the late 1950s, while I was a student at Paoli Elementary School, I read the famous children's book that talks about the Kid from Leftfield. Also around that time, I always said to myself, "What is it going to be like in the year 2000? I'll be fifty years old!" I couldn't comprehend being that old; the thought of it scared me, and I'd probably be in a wheelchair or something worse. I bet a lot of people my age thought the same thing. This is the story of what that kid did when he reached the age of fifty.
Download or read book More Readings From One Man s Wilderness written by John Branson and published by Skyhorse. This book was released on 2012-02-07 with total page 872 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history, many people have escaped to nature either permanently or temporarily to rest and recharge. Richard L. Proenneke, a modern-day Henry David Thoreau, is no exception. Proenneke built a cabin in Twin Lakes, Alaska in 1968 and began thirty years of personal growth, which he spent growing more connected to the wilderness in which he lived. This guide through Proenneke’s memories follows the journey that began with One Man’s Wilderness, which contains some of Proenneke’s journals. It continues the story and reflections of this mountain man and his time in Alaska. The editor, John Branson, was a longtime friend of Proenneke’s and a park historian. He takes care that Proenneke’s journals from 1974-1980 are kept exactly as the author wrote them. Branson’s footnotes give a background and a new understanding to the reader without detracting from Proenneke’s style. Anyone with an interest in conservation and genuine wilderness narratives will surely enjoy and treasure this book.
