Book A Walk From London to Land s End and Back

Download or read book A Walk From London to Land s End and Back written by Elihu Burritt and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Walk From London to Land's End and Back: With Notes by the Way The volume herewith presented to the reader is the sequel or companion to the one published last year under the title of "A Walk from London to John O'Groat's." It was the author's original intention to make the journey on foot from one end of Great Britain to the other in one season, and to make but one volume of his notes by the way. But, being obliged to postpone the commencement of the tour until midsummer, 1863, he was able to accomplish only the northern half of it during that year. This, however, furnished incident and observation enough to fill a pretty large book. The next spring, therefore, he set out on the other half of the journey, or "From London to Land's End and Back," a distance about equal to the tour of the preceding year. Knowing me to be temperate, you will of course not suspect my knowledge on this latter particular to be other than theoretical. Another error appeared in connexion with the Trelawny song, which, never having seen except in a written copy given to me by a Cornish maiden who sings it delight fully, I conceived to be the stirring ditty of the olden time referred to by historians; but the Rev. B. S. Hawker of Morwenstow kindly set me right by a letter, in which he explained With the sole exception of the chorus, this ballad was written by me in 1824-5, and was soon afterwards inserted in a Plymouth newspaper. It fell into the hands of Mr. Davies Gilbert, who reprinted it, under the impression that it was the old song of the seventeenth century. Sir Walter Scott, moreover, in similar mistake as to author and era, called it the only spirited ballad of that age. The recent error of Mr. Dickens on the same point has been lately acknowledged in Household Words. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Appreciating Physical Landscapes

Download or read book Appreciating Physical Landscapes written by T.A. Hose and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2016-02-01 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geotourism, as a form of sustainable geoheritage tourism, was defined and developed, from the early 1990s, to contextualize modern approaches to geoconservation and physical landscape management. However, its roots lie in the late seventeenth century and the emergence of the Grand Tour and its domestic equivalents in the eighteenth century. Its participants and numerous later travellers and tourists, including geologists and artists, purposefully explored wild landscapes as‘geotourists’. The written and visual records of their observations underpin the majority of papers within this volume; these papers explore some significant geo-historical themes, organizations, individuals and locations across three centuries, opening with seventeenth century elite travellers and closing with modern landscape tourists. Other papers examine the resources available to those geotourists and explore the geotourism paradigm. The volume will be of particular interest to Earth scientists, historians of science, tourism specialists and general readers with an interest in landscape history.
