Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mary's Meadow: And Letters From a Little Garden The Game of the Earthly Paradise was received with great delight by the readers of the story; one family of children adopted the word Mary-meadowing to describe the work which they did towards beautifying hedges and bare places; and my sister received many letters of enquiry about the various plants mentioned in her tale. These she answered in the Correspondence columns of the Magazine, and in July 1884, it was suggested that a Parkinson Society should be formed, whose objects were to search out and cultivate old garden flowers which have become scarce; to exchange seeds and plants; to plant waste places with hardy flowers; to circulate books on gardening amongst the Members; and further, to try to prevent the extermination of rare wild flowers, as well as of garden treasures. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Little Garden: And Your Little Garden Of course, we all know the quaint little old fashioned flower bed in the middle of the lawn is quite a thing of the past; in order to make a perfect landscape we must have a picture in a frame as it were, a lawn, a house, and a bor der. I can safely say, all flowers require sun shine; therefore we must follow Mr. Sun for a day or two, and see just where he casts his beams, for in just those spots must we use our greatest efforts. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Maryland Girls It was the quaintest of quaint towns, even at this late day when the rage for improvement seems to necessitate the cutting down of all venerable trees and the turning of smiling gardens into red clay banks. Where Nona lived there was a view of a rose garden from the front porch, an expanse of blue river to be seen from the upper windows on one side, and a glimpse of a winding creek on the other. But for the trees, one might have caught sight of the bay, and a knowledge of its nearness was cause for satisfaction in hot weather; though in winter Nona was glad to for get it. Book Tales of Old Maryland

Download or read book Tales of Old Maryland written by J. H. K. Shannahan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of Old Maryland: History and Romance on the Eastern Shore of Maryland I am one of those who think the Eastern Shore of Maryland the Garden Spot of the World - have been taught that from the cradle up. Many of the tales told here are some we have heard since childhood, and as this is an inquiring age, in recent years I have looked into them a little to ascertain just how much was fiction and how much was truth. I have concluded that it is difficult to draw a hard and fast line between them with the meagre information at hand, and have therefore let legend and fact go hand in hand with but one object in view, that of pre senting a series, of sketches, founded on fact. Book Variety in the Little Garden Classic Reprint

Download or read book Variety in the Little Garden Classic Reprint written by Mrs. Francis King and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-20 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Variety in the Little Garden The Puschkinia is another of these delicious little early things. Its nodding flower is held on a stem about four inches high, and is striped, bluish and white. On our ground it is fair to see, for it has spread itself about from the first sowing till long reaches of it now appear under lilacs, and the interesting thing is to see the amount of fine grass-like leaves among the newer blooming bulbs. All these leaves give promise of flowers within a year or two. In fact, when the blue-white mist of Puschkinia lies around a little semicircular brick platform, used as a sitting-place just at one side of the garden, -runs ofl' through pale yellow tulips, and rises through the handsome leaves of Euonymus skirting the curve of brick, I think this one of Spring's most endearing moments. Book excerpt: Jake Winroy had no looks, no education, and little else before he'd worked his way to the top of a million-dollar-a-month horse-betting ring. But when the state's latched onto his game, the feds take a bite and the lawyer fees eat away at the rest, all Jake's got left is the bottle and a beautiful wife whose every word is ugly. Jake's to be the top witness in a major case against organized crime -- if he hasn't already kicked the bucket before the trial has its day in court. But an enigmatic mafioso known only as The Man has a plan to make dead certain Jake never gets the chance to testify. The Man's hired Charlie "Little" Bigger, a hit man barely five feet tall, to infiltrate the Winroy residence as a tenant and murder Winroy in cold blood. To Little, it seems like the easiest job on Earth. Until he lays eyes on the beautiful and dangerous Fay and the Winroy's young housemaid Ruth, a woman as sensual as she is vulnerable. Savage Night is Jim Thompson at his most unpredictable and deeply suspenseful, in a claustrophobic thriller of one man's fractured mind.
