Book excerpt: Ruti is Markless. In a society where worth is determined by the mark on your palm and the magic it grants you, this also deems her worthless. Except she’s also a hardened survivor, a protector of the Markless…and the most powerful witch in Somanchi. With a single song, she can pray to the many gods for unimaginable powers. Dekala’s Mark is strong, a Mark fit for the future queen of Somanchi, but it’s also unstable. She knows the only solution is to be bonded, but she also knows that this would mean relinquishing control over her throne and kingdom. So when she is witness to Ruti’s power, Dekala offers the witch a deal: She can be prosecuted for her crimes…or she can help Dekala ascend to the throne, unbonded. Dekala is cold and brutal and cares only about getting her way. She is also determined, intelligent, and compassionate. Ruti is torn between wanting her to fail or to emerge victorious. But as the gods are defied, new alliances are forged, and unexpected feelings are unearthed, Ruti realizes the fate of the kingdom––and the survival of the Markless––lies in her unmarked hands. P R A I S E “Fast-paced and thrilling, this magical fantasy brings the enemies-to-lovers trope to new heights while poignantly examining themes of poverty, discrimination, and sexuality.” —Kirkus “Malburi crafts an ambitious adventure teeming with surprises and romance” —Publishers Weekly

Download or read book Mud Book written by John Cage and published by Chronicle Books. This book was released on 2017-04-04 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid-1950s, legendary avant-garde composer John Cage and artist Lois Long created a truly marvelous object. Part artist's book, part cookbook, and part children's book, Mud Book is a spirited, if not satirical, take on almost every child's first attempt at cooking and making. Through the humble mud pie—add dirt and water!—Cage and Long encourage children to explore their imagination and to get their hands dirty, and they offer this warning: "Mud pies are to make and look at, not to eat." A unique hybrid of art book, unconventional cookbook, and inspiration for young makers, this new edition of Mud Book will delight children and parents alike, and makes a charming gift for all ages.

Book excerpt: Chicago was my home town, but I grew up in Green Bay, Wisconsin. We all loved those Packers. I went back to Chicago to study nursing. This was during WWII, when we all wanted to help in the war to end wars. What I had wanted to be was an English professor so I could read and write all the time. I found that nursing was a magic carpet in many ways. I married a doctor from North Carolina. We moved to Southern Pines and I was glad to raise my six children in a place where the winter wasnt nine months long. My first vision of North Carolina was in April. Everything was in full bloom and I remember feeling that I had died and gone to heaven. People have said that it must have been difficult to have six children, but my memories are of enjoying it-- most of the time. My husbands midlife crisis ended our marriage. At forty five, I went back to college to finish a graduate degree. I began a career in nursing which included teaching. My writing during my nursing career had more to do with work sheets and constructing tests than fun. I did enjoy writing long letters to my children and grandchildren as they came along. In those days people wrote letters. I have always loved to travel. When an opportunity came to circumnavigate the globe with a friend, I took it. We spent a wonderful month in Japan, Thailand, Nepal, India, Dubai, UK and Canada before returning. I remember well how grateful I was to be home in the US. Id heard about people kissing the soil of their homeland and I understood. I married a former Duke art professor who had decided to paint full time. He said he would find a place where a nurse and an artist could live happily. He found Key West. I rented my house, packed my car and started driving down the Keys. When I got there I found a houseboat named Miss Maggie and we lived on her. It was a real adventure for me. I worked in a mental health clinic and met some of the unusual people who inhabit Key West. A lot of stories were there to tell. After a year my story didnt include the artist. I returned to North Carolina and went back to Duke Medical Center where I was head nurse of the Family Medicine Center. Residents were there learning to be family docs, something I admired. After three years, I found myself ready for a change. My children were all self sufficient. I met a Peace Corps recruiter at a party and when I found I could go to Fiji I said, Yes, please dont give that place to anyone else. It was a wonderful two years of my life. I loved the people and the beauty everywhere. I taught a bit and learned a lot. One of the things I learned in Fiji was what they called diridiri. It meant slow down and enjoy the moment. When I returned I went back to Duke to work in psychiatry, but never full time. I arranged my work so I could take classes at the Duke school for older people, now called OLLI. I also facilitated classes on Reading Shakespeare and Great Books. I taught English as a second language at our library. Doing these things, slow and easy, gave me joy. OLLI gave me more than a place to teach and learn. A classmate, Mal, and I shared a number of classes. Finally we decided to share life. Mal and I traveled to many places. He had been in the diplomatic service and knew Europe well, so I got to see some special places off the beaten path. He left for heaven on a train in Budapest after saying that our three week river cruise had been the happiest time of his life Now, I live in a wonderful village called the Forest. I enjoy reading, writing, a bit of bridge, friends and family. This family now includes my four wonderful children, ten grandchildren with spouses, and twenty great grandchildren. Life is good
Download or read book The Pemberley Papers written by Yvonne Finnegan and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2020-11-30 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prepare yourself for dreadful revelations about Jane Austen’s most beloved fictional great house, Pemberley in Derbyshire! When contemplating the storyline of Pride and Prejudice, have you ever wondered how Mr. Darcy progressed from contemptuous indifference to irrepressible passion toward Eliza Bennet? Whether Mr. Wickham was truly so wicked as he was depicted to be? Why old Mr. Darcy was so fond of his steward’s son? Much is left untold in Pride and Prejudice. What cosmic influences brought Eliza Bennet and Mr. Darcy to their “final good understanding”? In The Pemberley Papers, the lives of Georgiana and Fitzwilliam Darcy and the swirling underworld of servants are brought to light. We learn in this fanciful interpretation of Pride and Prejudice how military spies, émigré French priests, midwives, music instructors, and Darcy’s dog contribute to the well-known happy ending for Austen’s most charming couple.
Download or read book From Hell on Earth to Sanctity in Heavens written by Odd Haugan and published by Strategic Book Publishing & Rights Agency. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Someday in the future, when terrorism, pollution, and global warming (with horrendous weather changes) force earthbound man to the precipice of existence, mankind will have to find sanctity from destruction. The answer may lie in adapting to living in space, or on man-made islands in the middle of the ocean. After living shoulder to shoulder in cramped quarters for years on end, survivors soon discover that all forms of religion and politics must be banned; otherwise, mankind is doomed. Laid off from Boeing, Don Ringo keeps trying to establish a business, but fails miserably. Only when he teams up with a retired con man does he succeed, by buying a bankrupt space shuttle manufacturer. The space shuttle he calls Earth Hopper is a resounding success, reducing launch costs to a fraction of his competitors. He decides to open a "Spaceshop" in Earth orbit that provides supplies and repair services to NASA, the International Space Station, International Moon Base, and to others. Teaming up with Zili Pedog in Sitnalta, their fortunes multiply, and space is conquered. The future of mankind is at stake. The assault comes from the failures of religion, the politics of capitalism, socialism, communism, autocracy, dictatorship, and democracy in not addressing global recession, and man-made ecological disaster. The Armageddon of tomorrow may well come long before earthlings take the precautions needed to survive as an intelligent species.
