Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Little Book of Western Verse Ence, telling us of the happiness that was ours and comforting us with the ever recur ring thought of the pleasures of that travelled road. For it is happiness to walk and talk with a brother for forty years, and it is happi ness to know that the surety of that brother's affection, the knowledge of the greatness of his heart and the nobility of his mind, are not for one memory alone but may be pub licly attested for admiration and emulation. That it has fallen to me to speak to the world of my brother as I knew him I rejoice. 1 do not fear that, speaking as a brother, I shall crowd the laurel wreaths upon him, for to this extent he lies in peace already honored; but itl can show him to the world, not as a poet but as a man, - itl may lead men to see more of that goodness, sweetness, and gentleness that were in him, I shall the more bless the memory that has survived. My brother was born in St. Louis in 1850. Whether the exact day was September 2 or September 3 was a question over which he was given to speculation, more particularly in later years, when he was accustomed to discuss it frequently and with much earnest. Book excerpt: A Little Book of Western Verse: Large Print Eugene Field Comradeship was the indispensable factor in my brother's life. It was strong in his youth; it grew to be an imperative necessity in later years. In the theory that it is sometimes good to be alone he had little or no faith. Even when he was at work in his study, when it was almost essential to thought that he should be undisturbed, he was never quite content unless aware of the presence of human beings near at hand, as betrayed by their voices. It is customary to think of a poet wandering off in the great solitudes, standing alone in contemplation of the wonderful work of nature, on the cliffs overlooking the ocean, in the paths of the forest or on the mountain side. My brother was not of this order. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tumbleweeds: A Book of Western Verse Of medium height, with deep, dark eyes glowing with the light of kindly sympathy from a face at once spiritually and volitionally expressive, Mr. Dunroy, even to the casual passer on the street, presents a more than ordinary appearance. His physical type is plainly that of the poet not made, but born; for no one could be more unaffected than he. Born thirty-two years ago at Galesburg, Illinois, he moved, while quite young, to the prairies of northwestern Iowa, where the earlier years of his life were passed, with nothing in sight but the broad expanse of green below and the bright blue sky above. Here, like the old poets, he became the child of nature; for out of her mysterious recesses he heard the voice of the muses, and from the earliest struggled to give expression to the words which he heard and the visions which he saw. But Fortune and the Muses are not always on intimate terms. Our young poet had many a grim battle to fight; yet out of this very strenuousness of fate, with singular triumph he has builded for himself a character and a work that are to endure. Mr. Dunroy has proved himself the master of his en vironment. This is the supreme test in the life of the man of destiny. I'm too well aware of what has been and ought to be done in metre to over rate my productions, which are now valuable to me only as means to an end.
