Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Olden Time: A Short History of the Descendants of John Murray, the Good; With Memories of More Recent Date Mr. Murray's city residence was in that part of Pearl street formerly known as Queen street, and within a short distance of the Government House on or near the Battery, around which the houses of the wealthiest merchants clustered. The first fort built by the Dutch, known as Fort Amsterdam, was near this point, probably the original site of the buildings now occupied by the Commissioners of Emigration. It has known various transitions, from a simple barricade against the Indians to a notable stronghold of the Revolution, and lastly a reception house for the thousands who emigrate to these shores yearly. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Arbogast was restless He viewed his future in Baden-Württemberg, Germany as bleak. It was a part of his DNA to create a better life for himself and his descendants, at least give them a better opportunity than he saw in his existing situation. Local talk had it that the frontier wilderness in this place called America offered opportunities if one had the right stuff to survive the challenge. But was his life so reached in Germany that he should risk his future on a gamble of wrestling a small parcel on the earth surface from the current owner who would die before he gave it up, and ever mindful that the former owner lingered in the nearby forest. Could this be a better life, knowing most of his remaining years would be committed just surviving while getting a toe hole in the American wilderness? The payoff for the toil and suffering of the pioneer comes from the 'better life' of future generations .. And so Michael Arbogast came, leaving the hinder land of Baden-Württemberg. He put down roots in the heart of the Allegany Mountains, straddling the Eastern North America continental divide in what is now Highland County, VA. Here his family came into existence and prospered, expanding to well over 15,000 descendants. The size of the Michael Arbogast family exceeds what can be included in one volume. As a result it is presented in three volumes. Contents unique to each volume are: Volume One - History of Michael the Man, His immediate family, and the descendants of his oldest son Odessus Adam.Volume Two - The descendants of his children David, Mary Elizabeth, son Michael, Dorothy, Volume Three - The descendants of his children Henry, Peter, John and GeorgeThe bulk of each volume is a recording of the descendants of Michael and his wife Mary Elizabeth Samuels, plus interesting side stories about many descendants. This book is about caring for your ancestors. If you don't care then Dr. Price (William Price, author of Historical Sketches,1901) had it correct, "Persons knowing but little of those gone before is very likely to care but little of those coming after them." And why should you care? Consider this; if you are the product of an emigrant ancestor didn't some not-to-be-forgotten relative prevail over the obstacles so that you might exist. If any thread of your emigrate ancestry had wiggled ever so much from the path they followed you would have experienced an eternity of nonexistence. So why would one not collect the data and honor our ancestors? Thucydides said "Both justice and decency require that we should bestow on our forefathers an honourable remembrance." And the Good Book offers these words "Hath this been in your days, or even in the days of your fathers? Tell your children of it, and let your children tell their children, and their children another generation. Joel 1:1-3

This book was released on 2016-10-03 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Genealogy and History of the Clay Family In some respects the Clays were a peculiar people. They have mostly led very quiet and uneventful lives. Most of them have been engaged in agricultural pursuits. Some have been mechanics; a few in trade. Hardly any in what is called the professions. Some have been active in town and county affairs. But none have ever reached a very high position in the state or nation. In this respect we fall far behind our distant kinsmen, the Southern Clays. Book Captain Ninian Steele and His Descendants

Download or read book Captain Ninian Steele and His Descendants written by Newton Chambers Steele and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Captain Ninian Steele and His Descendants: A Short Historical Narrative of Ninian Steele and His Descendants, With Genealogical Tables Showing the Proper Place in the Family of Every Member of It Whose Name Could Be Learned Several years ago, while doing some other genealogical work, I made many inquiries regarding my maternal ancestry. The information thus gained I laid away until recently, when I began to think seriously of putting it into book form for the benefit of others. I sent out a circular letter stating my thoughts on the subject, and in a short time enough subscriptions were secured to justify me in going on with the work. I have made great efforts to get exact and detailed data, that this book might be complete and correct, and I felicitate myself that my efforts have been remarkably successful. I did my best to induce subscribers to furnish pictures of themselves and families for the book, and I am sorry so few have entered the family picture gallery. There will be many regrets that no more pictures were put in. There is not much of the book, but it contains the net results of my investigations along our ancestral and family lines. Those who read it will never realize the amount of time and labor required to collect and arrange for publication the material found in this little book. I hope it has not all been in vain, but that the little volume may be a source of interest, pleasure and profit for generations to come. This book was released on 2019-02-11 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancestors and Descendants of Joshua Williams, a Mayflower Descendant and Pioneer In preparing this little volume I have endeavored with utmost fidelity to avoid errors in names and dates. Handwriting is often difficult to decipher. Various members of the family have not always agreed upon essential facts. I have travelled hundreds of miles, examined voluminous records, and spent no end of time and money. That I have escaped errors and written an infallible history is too much to hope. This much, however, has been accomplished: Written records long buried have been unearthed. Oral recollections that must shortly perish with the passing of older members of the family are now in tangible form. To have assembled together this hitherto unwritten history is a satisfaction in itself. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Ancestry and Descendants of Josiah Hale

Download or read book Ancestry and Descendants of Josiah Hale written by Oscar Fitzalan Hale and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancestry and Descendants of Josiah Hale: Fifth in Descent From Samuel Hale of Hartford, Conn;, 1637 The work of compiling this record was not begun, nor has it at any time been prosecuted, with any expectation or desire of pecuniary reward, but, on the contrary, was prompted purely by a love of kinship, and a desire to get in closer touch with the various lines of descent. It is true, the work has grown to proportions beyond all expectation, and has required a large amount of time patience and perseverance, but it has at all times been a fascinating and delightful labor of love. It was the original intention of the compiler of these records to confine them to the descendants of his grandfather, Josiah Hale, but so much information, relative to his (Josiah's) ancestry and to other lines of descent therefrom, has been received that it has been thought best to extend the record to include his direct descent from Samuel Hale, "the settler" of Hartford, Conn., 1637. An epistolary appendix has also been added showing some of the sources of information and incidentally other lines of Hale descent. In this connection I would fain mention the names of those who have rendered conspicuous aid in the work, but so many have rendered such willing and more or less important service that to mention any names might seem to imply that the aid of all was not fully appreciated, and I must therefore content myself with this general expression of appreciation and gratitude. There is a growing desire among the descendants of the old New England families to have the genealogies of their ancestors compiled, and I shall be most happy if this little volume should prove one of the stepping stones to a complete genealogy of our American ancestor Samuel Hale of Hartford. But if it should only result in cementing the ties of friendship and consanguinity between those herein named, I shall feel amply rewarded. Book Genealogy of the Descendants of Omri Warner

Download or read book Genealogy of the Descendants of Omri Warner written by C. O. Warner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Genealogy of the Descendants of Omri Warner: And a More Extended History of Milo Warner and His Family Charles Warner, born Jan. 18, 1736; died Aug. 12, 1808. His wife, Martha Warner, born Aug. 20, 1788, died July 28, 1827. They were married April 2, 1759. Their children were: Orpha, Omri, Lucena, Levi and Asa Zimri. Martha Warner, who married Charles Warner, was the daughter (twelfth child) of Samuel Warner, son of Thomas Warner, son of John Warner, the head of the family in this country. I have long wished that I knew more of our family history, and believing there will come after me those who will have the same desire, I write down what I have learned and what I myself know of the family. Of the first of the name who came to this country we know little but their names, and not much even of my great-grandfather, Omri, except that he was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. Book The Descendants of Polly and Ebenezer Alden

Download or read book The Descendants of Polly and Ebenezer Alden written by Ebenezer Alden and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Descendants of Polly and Ebenezer Alden: Who Were Sixth in Descent From John Alden, the Pilgrim In the following pages an attempt is made to bring into order the details of descent of two of the lines of the posterity of John Alden, the Pilgrim. Mainly they are a record of our researches, and of the labor of our many friendly helpers. There can be no question of the value and the necessity of such work as this, even if imperfectly done, if it is once conceded that his worth while to preserve records of descent; and one who attempts to follow any line of our family in the first two hundred years, when there were few Plymouth or Bristol County towns in which a John or Joseph or David or Ebenezer did not live, and in some more than one at the same time, will need all the light that he can get from any source in arriving at the truth as to the parentage of a given person. It is useless for us to regret that this record of a sister and brother is in double form, and that some of the facts connected with their common ancestors are stated more than once in the historical sketch that precedes the matter comprehended under the title-page. The daily duties of each have left too little time for even this result, and the genealogist who uses our work must exercise what patience he can with the repetitions. To the descendants of either the duplications of fact will seem less vexatious. This double plan of work, by which each of us becomes solely responsible for his work, does not extend to the arrangement of the order of statement, in which a plan which seemed on the whole the least objectionable has been adopted. Each Alden mentioned will be distinguished by an Arabic numeral before the name, and the relationship to the immediate ancestor will be shown by the number of that ancestor after the name. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Isaac P. Carter Family and Their Descendants This little book is dedicated to the descendants of Isaac P. and Joanna (Gay) Carter in the hope that in the future some one who is more capable will take it up and write a more complete history of the family than I have been able to do. I have written several letters in my endeavor to find out who our ancestors were, and where they came from, and have only succeeded in getting the names of my great grand-parents, Edward Carter and Esther Powers. In getting the names and date of birth, marriage and death of others, I have been dependant on other friends, and I am very thankful to them for their services; and while there may be some mistakes, and some of the history came from father to son, in the main I am satisfied that it is very near correct. Isaac P. Carter and his children spent their lives in a new country with but little of this world's goods and I have tried to show the conditions of life that surrounded them and the hardships and inconveniences of that life with only the bare necessaries of life; and especially the labor the female portion had to perform in preparing food and clothing for the family and the poor chance they had for an education and religious instructions. When once the tangled skein of the family his tory began to unravel. The author's interest increased and he determined to complete the work. During his vacations, the records of towns, coun ties, courts, deeds, families and tombstones have been examined; aged people have been consulted; and every story and legend concerning the early members of the family, that has come to the author's knowledge, has been weighed and compared with the broken and deficient records, until the following history has been wrought out.
