Book The Lithuanian Family in its European Context 1800 1914

Download or read book The Lithuanian Family in its European Context 1800 1914 written by Dalia Leinarte and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-08 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates marriage and divorce in the nineteenth-century European territories of the Russian Empire. It uncovers the way a peasant community employed unsanctioned marital behaviour, such as cohabitation and bigamy, among others, in order to respond to the external factors that had an impact on the family life, including transmission of inheritance and household structure. Lithuania was part of the Tsarist Empire until 1914. This case study reveals how under often restrictive laws and policies – serfdom up to 1861, and the pervasive role of the Church, in addition to deep-rooted customary practices – women and men manage to normalize their family life. The volume is based on a wide range of archival sources and uncovers familial behaviour both from an individual and community perspectives.

Book Common Culture and the Ideology of Difference in Medieval and Contemporary Poland

Download or read book Common Culture and the Ideology of Difference in Medieval and Contemporary Poland written by Teresa Pac and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-02-10 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teresa Pac provides a much-needed contribution to the discussion on shared culture as foundational to societal survival. Through the examination of common culture as a process in medieval Kraków, Poznań, and Lublin, Pac challenges the ideology of difference—institutional, religious, ethnic, and nationalistic. Similarly, Pac maintains, twenty-first century Polish leaders utilize anachronistic approaches in the invention of Polish Catholic identity to counteract the country’s increasing ethnic and religious diversity. As in the medieval period, contemporary Polish political and social elites subscribe to the European Union’s ideology of difference, legitimized by a European Christian heritage, and its intended basis for discrimination against non-Christians and non-white individuals under the auspices of democratic values and minority rights, among which Muslims are a significant target.

Book Local Communities and the Israeli Polity

Download or read book Local Communities and the Israeli Polity written by Efraim Ben-Zadok and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the first systematic effort to analyze the role of local communities and regions in Israel's national politics. Traditionally portrayed as either elitist and highly centralized, or as pluralistic with very active interest groups, Israeli politics have seldom accounted for local and regional forces. The authors demonstrate the growing importance of these communities in the politics of the country. Their analyses are based on the concept of "spatial sector," and eight sectors are covered: The West Bank and Gaza Strip Arabs, Israeli Arabs, development towns, renewal neighborhoods, religious neighborhoods, Gush Emunim settlements, kibbutzim and moshavim, and Jerusalem.

Book Music in the American Diasporic Wedding

Download or read book Music in the American Diasporic Wedding written by Inna Naroditskaya and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music in the American Diasporic Wedding explores the complex cultural adaptations, preservations, and fusions that occur in weddings between couples and families of diverse origins. Discussing weddings as a site of negotiations between generations, traditions, and religions, the essays gathered here argue that music is the mediating force between the young and the old, ritual and entertainment, and immigrant lore and assimilation. The contributors examine such colorful integrations as klezmer-tinged Mandarin tunes at a Jewish and Taiwanese American wedding, a wedding services industry in Chicago's South Asian community featuring a diversity of wedding music options, and Puerto Rican cultural activists dancing down the aisles of New York's St. Cecilia's church to the thunder of drums and maracas and rapping their marriage vows. These essays show us what wedding music and performance tell us about complex multiethnic diasporic identities and remind us that how we listen to and celebrate otherness defines who we are.
