Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sidelights on Life in Lithuania The Forget-me-not By Maironis That floweret delights Which so modestly grows And blooms by the stream in the dale; Not being bedizened Like the delicate rose, It fears not late Autumn's chill gale. Like the eye of a dove It is bashful and coy; Innocent as the heavens blue. It fills the beholder With affection and joy, And blossoms the long summer through. Bright wreaths of red roses Or garlands of daisies, Though gorgeous, stir not the breast. The glowing clove-blossoms, Like old copper pieces, Cause not e'en the miser unrest. In Nature's great garden Every blossom and tree By some pretty title we call. But of these lovely names, It seems always to me, Forget-me-not's sweetest of all. • Author : Kazys Boruta
  • Publisher : Central European University Press
  • Release : 2009-04-10
  • ISBN : 6155053286

Download or read book Whitehorn s Windmill written by Kazys Boruta and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2009-04-10 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of his political views, Kazys Boruta spent years in prison both before and after WWII. In the last phase of his life in Soviet Lithuania, he earned a living by translations published under a pseudonym. Most of Whitehorn’s Windmill (Baltaragio malūnas) was written in 1942, during the German occupation. Bearing a lyrical style that gives full rein to the oral folktale tradition Lithuania is famous for, the novel is by turns romantic, farcical, fantastic, and tragic. The sense of spirituality that permeates the work reflects Lithuania’s pagan roots that were overlaid with an occasionally over-zealous Catholicism not so very long ago. The story is about Whitehorn the miller’s efforts to find a match for his beautiful daughter, Jurga, against various calamities with and among suitors, neighbors, priests and other inhabitants of the village, and ultimately against the devil’s spell. The interesting plot made the novel popular as juvenile literature, too.

Book The Polish Lithuanian State 1386 1795

Download or read book The Polish Lithuanian State 1386 1795 written by Daniel Z. Stone and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For four centuries, the PolishLithuanian state encompassed a major geographic region comparable to present-day Poland, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Russia, Latvia, Estonia, and Romania. Governed by a constitutional monarchy that offered the numerous nobility extensive civil and political rights, it enjoyed unusual domestic tranquility, for its military strength kept most enemies at bay until the mid-seventeenth century and the country generally avoided civil wars. Selling grain and timber to western Europe helped make it exceptionally wealthy for much of the period. The PolishLithuanian State, 13861795 is the first account in English devoted specifically to this important era. It takes a regional rather than a national approach, considering the internal development of the Ukrainian, Jewish, Lithuanian, and Prussian German nations that coexisted with the Poles in this multinational state. Presenting Jewish history also clarifies urban history, because Jews lived in the unincorporated "private cities" and suburbs, which historians have overlooked in favor of incorporated "royal cities." In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the private cities and suburbs often thrived while the inner cities decayed. The book also traces the institutional development of the Roman Catholic Church in PolandLithuania, one of the few European states to escape bloody religious conflict during the Reformation and Counter Reformation. Both seasoned historians and general readers will appreciate the many excellent brief biographies that advance the narrative and illuminate the subject matter of this comprehensive and absorbing volume.
