Book A Literary History of Scotland Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Literary History of Scotland Classic Reprint written by John Hepburn Millar and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Literary History of Scotland The general scope of the following pages does not, it is conceived, require any elaborate explanation. The work is an effort to fulfil the promise of its title-page, and it is for the reader to judge how far that effort has been successful. Down to the date of the Union of the Parliaments, the authors task was a perfectly plain-sailing one, in so far as regards the choice of writers to be dealt with. Thenceforward, however, he was from time to time confronted with the question, whether a particular writer of undoubted Scottish nationality should or should not be included in what professes to be a record of Scottish literature. That question was sometimes by no means a simple one to answer, and it was not without misgivings that the resolution was ultimately adopted, to abstain from attempting anything like adequate criticism of men like James Thomson, James Boswell, and Thomas Carlyle, and to rest satisfied with little more than the bare mention of their names. The reasons which determined this course are in each case sufficiently indicated in the text. If it be thought, on the other hand, that, whatever may be said of such omissions, the last two chapters err on the side of overcrowding, there can only be urged in extenuation a desire to make the work complete in the treatment of a period as to which information is not yet so readily accessible, or at least so conveniently digested, as it will some day come to be. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History and Chronicles of Scotland, Vol. 1 HE early part of the Literary History of Scotland is involved in much ob scurity, and has not been investigated with a due share either of care or of candour. Many eminent writers who adorned the reigns of the Stuarts du ring the fifteenth and sixteenth centu ries, are now in a great measure unknown or forgotten. The difficulties these early writers had to encounter, from the limited sources of information which they possessed, - the absence of authentic records to guide them in their researches, - the romantic and fabulous times of which they wrote, - and the want of science to operate as a check up on credulity, seem entirely to have escaped those critics by whom their labours have been depreciated, and their claims to the gratitude of posterity denied. Book Scottish Vernacular Literature

Download or read book Scottish Vernacular Literature written by Thomas Finlayson Henderson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-03 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scottish Vernacular Literature: A Succinct History In such auspicious circumstances a succinct hand book of the Whole subject - a handbook Which should summarise the main features of this in many ways admirable literature, should trace its interdependence, even in prosody, from its earliest beginnings down to Burns and his immediate successors, and should serve as, at least, an introduction and guide to its more general and systematic study - is surely an almost imperative desideratum. No such handbook has up to the present been attempted, nor does any History of Scottish Literature exist that can be re garded as a substitute for it, the few Histories that have from time to time appeared, embracing only special aspects or special periods of general Scottish literature, While in none has the vernacular literature been dealt With as a separate entity. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Centuries of Scottish Literature, Vol. 1 Haliburton in his Horace in Homespun, or of Mr. J. M. Barrie in his pictures of Thrums. But probably these writers would be among the first to acknowledge that certain changes which have passed over the country since the days of Scott have narrowed the range of such work. The cities and the upper classes have been largely Angli cised. The Scotland of Lord Cockburn's Memoirs, with its Scotch-speaking Judges of Session, and its ladies of rank, entirely Scotch both in language and habits, is gone. Well marked national peculiarities are now to be found principally in the remoter and quieter rural districts, and in the lower classes of society. On the whole, it seems best to regard Scott as the last great figure in the Scotland which was the outcome of the Reformation. Book Scottish History and Literature

Download or read book Scottish History and Literature written by John M. Ross and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scottish History and Literature: To the Period of the Reformation In 1851, when he was eighteen years of age, Ross entered the University of Glasgow, where, in the Humanity class-room in an out-of-the-way corner of the inmost quadrangle of the old College, his pale face and finely cut features began to attract attention and to draw fellow-students around him. Neither then nor afterwards did he attain, or seek, distinction in class work. He did faithfully the exercises prescribed, but his attention was not concentrated upon them. He was occupied with a broader course of study, and devoted more time to English literature than to the Greek and Roman classics. He also, at this period, acquired a considerable knowledge of French and German literature. The only prize he won - and he won it easily - was for the poem in the class of Logic and Rhetoric. The subject prescribed was con genial - an address to Ailsa Craig - the sea-girt rock which can be seen so well from the Ayrshire heights on which he had wandered in his boyhood. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Origin of the Scots and the Scottish Language: Inquiry Preliminary to the Proper Understanding of Scottish History and Literature N 0 question has puzzled antiquaries more than the Origin of the Scottish People and Language. The fabulous derivations in which our early historians indulged - not even exclusive of the classic Buchanan - opened a wide field for speculation; and the few authorities, prior to the existence of indubitable national records, whose state ments can at all be relied upon, have had their facts twisted into all manner of meanings, or been wholly set aside, according to the peculiar views of the respective combatants. Book Scotland Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Scotland Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Sir Walter Scott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scotland, Vol. 1 of 2 The Author was invited to undertake this general Sketch of Scottish History in connection with a similar abridgment of English History by Sir James Mackin tosh, and a History of Ireland by Thomas Moore, Esquire. There are few literary persons who would not have been willing to incur much labor and risk of reputation for the privilege of publishing in such society. On the present occasion, the task, though perhaps still a rash one, was rendered more easy by the Author having so lately been employed on the volumes called Tales of a Grandfather, transferred from the History of Scotland, for the benefit of a young relation. Yet the object and tenor of these two works are extremely different. In the Tales taken from Scottish history, the author, throwing into the shade, or rather omitting all that could embarrass the under standing or tire the attention of his juvenile reader, was desirous only to lay before him what was best adapted to interest his imagination, and confining himself to facts, to postpone to a later period an investigation of the principles out of which those facts arose. Download or read book Scottish Chapbook Literature Classic Reprint written by William Harvey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scottish Chapbook Literature Much biographical and bibliographical information con cerning authors and printers and publishers is given. The greater part of this is presented in footnotes, which have been introduced freely with the view of enhancing the usefulness and value of the work, and at the same time preventing the text from becoming overloaded with details. To facilitate reference, an alphabetical list of all Chap books referred to in the volume is included. It will be found at page 1435. A Glossary and General Index have also been added. In the matter of Illustrations the book is well supplied. A number of the quaintest pictures are reproduced, many of which shew at once the crudities of art and the pictorial limitations with which early printers had to contend. No pains have been spared to make the volume worthy the subject of which it treats, and it is hoped that it will be of value both as a contribution to the literature of the social life of Scotland, and as supplying, in the absence of an exhaustive history, a hitherto unwritten chapter of the literary annals of our country.
