D. 1868: With Genealogical and Historical Notes While the antiquity and important of the office of Sheriff is generally admitted, there are on this, as on every other question in the least involved in obscurity by reason of its ancientness, various opinions as to its origin and derivation; but the most probable and best received opinion is that it is an office of Saxon origin, and that it dates from the time when good King Alfred bore the sceptre. This king, whose wisdom, considering the age in which he lived, and the consequent disadvantages he laboured under, cannot fail even now to enlist our admiration, for the better government of this country, and that the administration of justice should be placed on a just and fair basis, caused the whole country over which he had dominion to be divided into tithings, hundreds, and shires, over which last division a sheriff was appointed, whose duty it was to represent the king in such division, and to see that peace was observed.
