Book Acidic Deposition and Aquatic Ecosystems

Download or read book Acidic Deposition and Aquatic Ecosystems written by Donald F. Charles and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 742 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acidic deposition and its effect on aquatic ecosystems have become major scientific and public policy issues in the United States since the early 1970s, and many diverse studies have been completed. This book is the first comprehensive, integrated synthesis of available information on current and potential effects of acidic precipitation on lakes and streams in geographic regions with a high number of low-alkalinity surface water from the Adirondacks and the Southern Blue Ridge to the Upper Midwest to the Rocky Mountains, the Sierra Nevada, and the Cascades. Written by leading authors, the book examines the current status of water chemistry and characterizes the processes controlling water chemistry on a regional basis by using and comparing high-quality data sets. Methods for the assessment of long-term changes in water chemistry and their effects in fish and other biota are also presented. The book amply illustrates the substantial diversity among geographical regions with respect to the nature of surface waters and the complexity of their response to acidic deposition. This volume will be of great interest to researchers in limnology, aquatic ecology, environmental chemistry, hydrology, and atmospheric sciences. It will also serve as an important reference for environmental managers and policy makers.

This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NCCN Mountain Lakes Monitoring Program (Glesne et al. 2012) was developed to characterize and detect substantive trends within a representative set of subalpine lakes in each of the three NCCN parks. The primary focus of this program centers on the detailed monitoring of physical, chemical and biological trends in the same 20 core reference lakes sampled annually. Of the 20 core lakes funded by the NCCN, six lakes are at MORA, six are at NOCA, and eight are at OLYM. A secondary focus of the program is to determine the status of a broader population of park lakes through the less frequent (once per decade) sampling of 40-50 lakes. This report pertains to only the 20 core lakes. All core lakes were selected randomly from a subset of the entire population of similar lakes at each park. The subset, or sample frame includes lakes found entirely within park boundaries, ranging in size from 0.4 to 6.0 hectares, occurring at elevations from 1220 meters (4000 ft.) extending to the upper limit of the subalpine zone at each park, and which are not heavily influenced by glacial runoff. Lakes were also required to have a maximum depth greater than 2.5 meters, be accessible within a two-day hike from a trailhead, and have low densities of fish. An additional sampling design objective was to disperse sample lakes across the wide range of annual precipitation categories found within these mountainous NCCN parks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lakes change constantly in response to their surrounding landscape, and their airshed. Mirror Lake, located in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, has been carefully researched since the 1960s. This book, edited by Thomas C. Winter and Gene E. Likens, summarizes and interprets the extensive data collected on this lake and its watershed from 1981 to 2000, a period during which the lake was affected by a variety of climate conditions as well as significant human activity. The findings documented also identify the panoply of chemicals influenced by limnological processes and include percentages of inflow sources, percentages of water loss from seepage, surface outflow, and evaporation, and the effect of water flow on the lake nutrients.

Book Protocol for Long Term Monitoring of Mountain Lakes in the North Coast and Cascades Network Version July 9 2012

Download or read book Protocol for Long Term Monitoring of Mountain Lakes in the North Coast and Cascades Network Version July 9 2012 written by National Park National Park Service and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This protocol describes the rationale, objectives, sampling design, field and laboratory methods, data analysis and data management procedures for long-term monitoring of mountain lakes in the North Coast and Cascades Network (NCCN). Lake monitoring will occur at three NCCN parks including Mount Rainier National Park (MORA), North Cascades National Park Service Complex (NOCA), and Olympic National Park (OLYM). This prototol utilizes a cost efficient comprehensive approach, applying multiple indicators representing key physical, chemical, and biological attributes (Vital Signs) which will serve to address current management issues as well as future emerging issues at park-wide and region-wide scales.
