Book excerpt: An adrenaline-charged tale of unrelenting suspense that sparks with raw and savage energy... The newspapers scream out headlines that spark terror across the city. Ten murders on the New York City subway. Ten grisly crimes that defy all reason -- no pattern, no m.o., no leads for police to pursue. The press dubs the fiend the "Subway Psycho"; the NYPD desperately seeks their quarry before the city erupts in mass hysteria. But they won't find what they're looking for. Because they all think that the killer is human. Only a few know the true story -- a story the papers will never print. It is a tale of abject terror and death written in grit and steel... and blood. The tale of a man who vanished into the bowels of the urban earth one night, taken by a creature of unholy evil, then left as a babe abandoned on the doorstep of Hell. Now he is back, driven by twin demons of rage and retribution. He is unstoppable. And we are all his prey... unless a ragtag band of misfit souls will dare to descend into a world of manmade darkness, where the real and unreal alike dwell in endless shadow. A place where humanity has been left behind, and the horrifying truth will dawn as a madman's chilling vendetta comes to light... Filled with gripping drama and harrowing doomsday dread, The Light at the End is the book that ushered in a bold new view of humankind's most ancient and ruthless evil; a mesmerizing novel from two acknowledged masters of spellbinding suspense.

Book excerpt: A deeply panoramic tour of the night, from its brightest spots to the darkest skies we have left. A starry night is one of nature's most magical wonders. Yet in our artificially lit world, three-quarters of Americans' eyes never switch to night vision and most of us no longer experience true darkness. In The End of Night, Paul Bogard restores our awareness of the spectacularly primal, wildly dark night sky and how it has influenced the human experience across everything from science to art. From Las Vegas' Luxor Beam -- the brightest single spot on this planet -- to nights so starlit the sky looks like snow, Bogard blends personal narrative, natural history, science, and history to shed light on the importance of darkness -- what we've lost, what we still have, and what we might regain -- and the simple ways we can reduce the brightness of our nights tonight.

Book The Tunnel at the End of the Light

Download or read book The Tunnel at the End of the Light written by Jim Shepard and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Shepard may be the best lesser-known film critic." —The New York Times Book Review The first book of nonfiction from one of our great fiction writers. Given that most Americans proudly consider themselves non-political, where do our notions of collective responsibility come from? Which self-deceptions, when considering ourselves as actors on the world stage, do we cling to most tenaciously? Why do we so stubbornly believe, for example, that our country always means well when intervening abroad? The Tunnel at the End of the Light argues that some of our most persistent and destructive assumptions, in that regard, might come from the movies. In these ten essays Jim Shepard weaves close readings of film with cultural criticism to explore the ways in which movies work so ubiquitously to reflect how Americans think and act. Whether assessing the “high-spirited glee of American ruthlessness” captured in GoodFellas, or finding in Lawrence of Arabia a “portrait of the lunatic serenity of our leaders’ conviction in the face of all evidence and their own lack of knowledge,” he explores how we enter into conversations with specific genres and films—Chinatown, The Third Man, and Badlands among others—in order to construct and refine our most cherished illusions about ourselves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: OVER THE LAST decade or more we have become increasingly aware of how our materialistic, energy-intensive civilization has been destroying the fragile balance of the web of life that has sustained humanity and all living beings for millennia. Yet, while spiritual teachings tell us that the events in the outer world are a reflection of changes taking place in the inner worlds, we appear to have little awareness of how this outer darkening is reflected within. This book, written between 2004 and the winter of 2012, tells the story of these inner changes that belong to our spiritual destiny and the fate of our planet. It is a witness to the darkening of the light of the sacred, reflected in our continued ecological destruction, and what this might mean to our shared destiny. With this darkening comes the danger that we may lose the opportunity for the global awakening that was possible at the beginning of the new millennium. This story of our collective destiny, however painful, needs to be heard if we are to take responsibility for the Earth and reclaim our sacred role as guardians of the planet. "I bow to the courage in this book. Here Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee has allowed himself to hear the cry of the Earth. He has been brave enough to face and to feel the immensity of the loss. He has dared to share that with us and to hope we can wake up to save what's left of our world and our souls." —JOANNA MACY, Co-author, Active Hope: How to Face the Mess We're in Without Going Crazy "I was very moved by Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee's reflections." —MARY EVELYN TUCKER, Co-director, Yale Forum on Religion and Ecology "... insightfully calls us to action now to avoid further devastation of our planet—of the Earth which is our home. We can no longer afford to remain in a collective trance ignoring how the Earth is responding to our behavior. Llewellyn inspires us to turn within and engage in the work needed to transform our world. This book is a gem!" —SANDRA INGERMAN, MA, author Soul Retrieval and Medicine for the Earth,

Book Light at the End of the Bottle

Download or read book Light at the End of the Bottle written by Vanessa Bird and published by . This book was released on 2019-03-04 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you think of alcoholism as a mental illness or a choice? My name is Vanessa and I am an alcoholic. Has judgement already kicked in and you're starting to form an opinion of me from that one statement? If so, don't worry, I can assure you you're not the only one! This is my story about how alcoholism affected my life and the truth about how I was treated during my deepest moments of despair. Most people seem to think once you admit you have a problem, that's the hardest part done. In my experience, this was just the beginning of complete chaos. I struggled to get help and ended up completely desperate and fighting for my life. I have written this very personal account because in my case there was a huge lack of understanding on this subject and it seemed people around me were full of judgement. I felt I needed to write about the dark thoughts I had, and the crazy things I did during active addiction, so that others can know they are not alone with the insane head that alcoholism brings. I felt so alone until I reached out and realised other people had similar thoughts and behaviours as me, caused by the illness that is alcoholism. This is an honest account of what happened to me and the way I was treated by medical staff and alcohol centres when trying to get help. This is not just a happily-ever-after story, although the end result is recovery. It's a truthful account of the decade I lost through drinking, the ridiculous situations I got myself into, and the judgement I received from all and how it still affects my life now, years into sobriety.

Book The Light at the End of the Tunnel

Download or read book The Light at the End of the Tunnel written by Shawn Harper and published by Publishamerica Incorporated. This book was released on 2006-06-01 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Light at the End of the Tunnel is a poetic journey that allows the reader into the dark and sorrowful world of the author. The poems in the beginning are sad, depressive, self-loathing, and often bitter and angry. Here the author shares her most personal moments of heartache, depression, self-loathing, and suicide attempts. It is not for the weak of heart. The book then moves into a gray area that is more exploratory of the authors soul. She ponders the color of the sky to the power in the color of a childs eyes and the hold they have over her. Finally, we begin to see a glimmer of hope. There is a light up ahead and she follows it. The reader follows along with the author through love poems and admiration of nature, music, and art to the final poem where, at last, she finds where she belongs.
