Book Frontiers of Fundamental Physics

Download or read book Frontiers of Fundamental Physics written by M. Barone and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Olympia conference Frontiers of Fundamental Physics was a gathering of about hundred scientists who carryon their research in conceptually important areas of physical science (they do "fundamental physics"). Most of them were physicists, but also historians and philosophers of science were well represented. An important fraction of the participants could be considered "heretical" because they disagreed with the validity of one or several fundamental assumptions of modern physics. Common to all participants was an excellent scientific level coupled with a remarkable intellectual honesty: we are proud to present to the readers this certainly unique book. Alternative ways of considering fundamental matters should of course be vitally important for the progress of science, unless one wanted to admit that physics at the end of the XXth century has already obtained the final truth, a very unlikely possibility even if one accepted the doubtful idea of the existence of a "final" truth. The merits of the Olympia conference should therefore not be judged a priori in a positive or in a negative way depending on one's refusal or acceptance, respectively, but considered after reading the actual of basic principles of contemporary science, new proposals and evidences there presented. They seem very important to us.

Book World Development Report 2013

Download or read book World Development Report 2013 written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2012-10-15 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jobs provide higher earnings and better benefits as countries grow, but they are also a driver of development. Poverty falls as people work their way out of hardship and as jobs empowering women lead to greater investments in children. Efficiency increases as workers get better at what they do, as more productive jobs appear, and less productive ones disappear. Societies flourish as jobs bring together people from different ethnic and social backgrounds and provide alternatives to conflict. Jobs are thus more than a byproduct of economic growth. They are transformational —they are what we earn, what we do, and even who we are. High unemployment and unmet job expectations among youth are the most immediate concerns. But in many developing countries, where farming and self-employment are prevalent and safety nets are modest are best, unemployment rates can be low. In these countries, growth is seldom jobless. Most of their poor work long hours but simply cannot make ends meet. And the violation of basic rights is not uncommon. Therefore, the number of jobs is not all that matters: jobs with high development payoffs are needed. Confronted with these challenges, policy makers ask difficult questions. Should countries build their development strategies around growth, or should they focus on jobs? Can entrepreneurship be fostered, especially among the many microenterprises in developing countries, or are entrepreneurs born? Are greater investments in education and training a prerequisite for employability, or can skills be built through jobs? In times of major crises and structural shifts, should jobs, not just workers, be protected? And is there a risk that policies supporting job creation in one country will come at the expense of jobs in other countries? The World Development Report 2013: Jobs offers answers to these and other difficult questions by looking at jobs as drivers of development—not as derived labor demand—and by considering all types of jobs—not just formal wage employment. The Report provides a framework that cuts across sectors and shows that the best policy responses vary across countries, depending on their levels of development, endowments, demography, and institutions. Policy fundamentals matter in all cases, as they enable a vibrant private sector, the source of most jobs in the world. Labor policies can help as well, even if they are less critical than is often assumed. Development policies, from making smallholder farming viable to fostering functional cities to engaging in global markets, hold the key to success.

Book Investigating Classroom Discourse

Download or read book Investigating Classroom Discourse written by Steve Walsh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-04-18 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introducing language use and interaction as the basis of good teaching and learning, this invaluable book equips teachers and researchers with the tools to analyze classroom discourse and move towards more effective instruction. Presenting an overview of existing approaches to describing and analyzing classroom discourse, Steve Walsh identifies the principal characteristics of classroom language in the contexts of second language classrooms, primary and secondary classrooms, and higher education settings. A distinct feature of the book are the classroom recordings and reflective feedback interviews from a sample group of teachers that Walsh uses to put forward SETT (Self Evaluation of Teacher Talk) as a framework for examining discourse within the classroom. This framework is used to identify different modes of discourse, which are employed by teachers and students, to increase awareness of the importance of interaction, and to maximize learning opportunities. This book will appeal to applied linguists, teachers and researchers of TESOL, as well as practitioners on MEd or taught doctorate programmes.

Book Global Employment Trends 2014

Download or read book Global Employment Trends 2014 written by International Labor International Labor Office and published by International Labor Office. This book was released on 2014-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The annual Global Employment Trends reports provide the latest global and regional estimates of employment and unemployment, employment by sector, vulnerable employment, labour productivity and working poverty. They also analyse country-level issues and project trends in the labour market up to 2019. The 2014 report highlights the factors preventing a broad-based recovery in labour markets. Some countries have started to remain trapped in a downward spiral of high unemployment, stagnant or falling disposable incomes and weak aggregate demand. The multi-speed recovery in labour markets has had an impact on developing countries as well; reversals in in international capital flows, slower than expected growth in world trade and uncertainty about future global policymaking are adversely affecting job creation both in advanced and emerging economies. The rise in unemployment duration and the particularly severe situation for young workers are increasing the risk of long-term scars of the crisis on job and productivity growth. The report argues that countries need to step up their efforts to support aggregate demand. Those countries with improvements in employment need to allow their recovery to benefit those more affected. This can be achieved through job guarantee programmes for targeted labour market groups or through social protection measures. Also, new opportunities for growth and improvements in education and training systems can help jobseekers find jobs in new industries or occupations. The strong cut-back in public investment at the beginning of the crisis should also be reverted, helping countries both in the short and long run to promote growth and employment.

Book Global Employment Trends 2013

Download or read book Global Employment Trends 2013 written by International Labour Office and published by International Labor Office. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The annual Global Employment Trends reports provide the latest global and regional estimates of employment and unemployment, employment by sector, vulnerable employment, labor productivity, and working poverty, while also analyzing country-level issues and trends in the labor market. The 2013 edition highlights how the worldwide economic crisis is increasingly raising trend unemployment rates, partly driven by sectoral shifts of jobs that had been triggered by the crisis. The report argues that in countries with high and rising unemployment, job guarantee programs for targeted labor market groups should be a policy priority. Moreover, rising labor market discouragement and structural unemployment should be tackled with new skills and training initiatives to help jobseekers find employment in alternative industries and to promote their employability more broadly. Other possible areas of intervention are further investments in public infrastructure in developing countries and a swift implementation of financial market regulation to help stabilize the macroeconomic environment and stimulate job creation.
