Download or read book A Life Renewed 1983 1998 written by Roderick Stackelberg and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-06-21 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Life Renewed, 19831998 continues the personal story begun in Roderick Stackelbergs earlier autobiographical volumes, Out of Hitlers Shadow and Memory and History. The basic themes stressed in the prefaces to the first two volumes of his autobiographythe desire to honestly share his experiences in an aesthetically pleasing and enjoyable way retain their relevance for this later volume as well. This third volume covers his happiest and most generative years, including his new marriage to Sally Winkle and his work as a professor of history at Gonzaga University. His richly illustrated personal and professional stories are interspersed with a running commentary on the extraordinary political changes in the closing years of the twentieth century. The title of this volume, A Life Renewed, 1983-1998, refers to both his new marriage to Sally and to the birth of their son, Emmet, in 1991. The fifteen years covered in this volume are infused with the joys of a happy marriage, a gifted late-born off spring, and some limited but satisfying professional success. He also chronicles the successes of his older children as they pursue college and careers. Stackelberg considers this period to be the high noon of his life, before the onset of old age and ill health at the turn of the century.

Book Renewing a Modern Denomination

Download or read book Renewing a Modern Denomination written by Andy Goodliff and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-01-19 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an exploration of the renewal of the Baptist Union of Great Britain in the 1990s, the only historic UK denomination which grew in this period. It was an exciting time, with plenty of denominational activity and engagement, both theological and institutional. The book tells this story focusing on the particular individuals involved and the wide-ranging discussions centered around mission and identity, ministry, associating, and ecumenism. It argues that there were competing visions emerging from two different streams of thought which whilst not divisive caused tension. At the end of the decade structural changes were introduced with hope for the new millennium, but the book contends that opportunities were missed for a more deeply theological renewal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is my belief that the impending challenge to our civilization will not be how to cope with the future shock of a rapidly developing technology of material abundance but, rather, how to live with less. The pre-eminence of institutional schooling, either as a form of moral suasion to inculcate the masses in the age-old values or as a human assembly line feeding the economy, must give way to the learning needs of individuals struggling to reorient their lifestyles. This reordering of priorities will produce the most profound sense of change our society has experienced since the Great Depression ... Our present system of schooling by technician must give way to a new concept of teacher as change agent. This person will continue to stress literacy as a basic life skill, a fundamental on which to build patterns of lifelong learning. However, other basic skills must include cooperative problem solving, social and emotional fulfilment, and the ability to identify, analyse, develop, and use resources as part of a process of learning to cope with continuous change.

Book excerpt: This work represents a novel treatment of the mission of the Church fathers, the early Christian ascetics, and their disciples during the turbulent centuries that followed the passing of the apostles. Approaching a normally arcane subject largely through the interplay of character and incident, Outreach and Renewal provides a stirring account of the various ways in which spiritual leaders of the time promoted the Gospel message. Readers experience these leaders as they illuminate, strengthen, restore, or defend the faith, through their words and actions, of fellow Christians. Facilitating fresh insights and thought-provoking conclusions, the theme proceeds through the interaction of a varied cast of vital individuals engaged in lively and sometimes acerbic discourse, which is always aimed at the glory of God. With the careful attention the author gives to the early Irish church and its singular representatives, this work is a unique and valuable contribution to the study of the patristic era.

Book The Reformation as Renewal

Download or read book The Reformation as Renewal written by Matthew Barrett and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2023-06-06 with total page 1009 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A holistic, eye-opening history of one of the most significant turning points in Christianity, The Reformation as Renewal demonstrates that the Reformation was at its core a renewal of evangelical catholicity. In the sixteenth century Rome charged the Reformers with novelty, as if they were heretics departing from the catholic (universal) church. But the Reformers believed they were more catholic than Rome. Distinguishing themselves from Radicals, the Reformers were convinced they were retrieving the faith of the church fathers and the best of the medieval Scholastics. The Reformers saw themselves as faithful stewards of the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church preserved across history, and they insisted on a restoration of true worship in their own day. By listening to the Reformers' own voices, The Reformation as Renewal helps readers explore: The Reformation's roots in patristic and medieval thought and its response to late medieval innovations. Key philosophical and theological differences between Scholasticism in the High Middle Ages and deviations in the Late Middle Ages. The many ways sixteenth and seventeenth century Protestant Scholastics critically appropriated Thomas Aquinas. The Reformation's response to the charge of novelty by an appeal to the Augustinian tradition. Common caricatures that charge the Reformation with schism or assume the Reformation was the gateway to secularism. The spread of Reformation catholicity across Europe, as seen in first and second-generation leaders from Luther and Melanchthon in Wittenberg to Zwingli and Bullinger in Zurich to Bucer and Calvin in Strasbourg and Geneva to Tyndale, Cranmer, and Jewel in England, and many others. The theology of the Reformers, with special attention on their writings defending the catholicity of the Reformation. This balanced, insightful, and accessible treatment of the Reformation will help readers see this watershed moment in the history of Christianity with fresh eyes and appreciate the unity they have with the church across time. Readers will discover that the Reformation was not a new invention, but the renewal of something very old.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining ethnographic research with theological analysis, this book explores how the Catholic Charismatic Renewal (CCR), one of the largest new movements within the global Catholic Church, has developed in contemporary Britain and Northern Ireland. Drawing on extensive fieldwork, this study analyses the beliefs, behaviour, and worldviews of CCR members and considers how these relate to key theological themes in the movement’s unique encounter between Pentecostalism and Catholicism. The author explores the extent to which the CCR has been integrated into the mainstream of the Catholic Church, and how the movement’s members have adapted their theology over time. Painting a picture of a diverse community, this book enriches understanding of the CCR and contemporary Christianity in Britain.

Book Wendy and the Lost Boys

Download or read book Wendy and the Lost Boys written by Julie Salamon and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2011-08-18 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authorized biography of Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Wendy Wasserstein. In Wendy and the Lost Boys bestselling author Julie Salamon explores the life of playwright Wendy Wasserstein's most expertly crafted character: herself. The first woman playwright to win a Tony Award, Wendy Wasserstein was a Broadway titan. But with her high- pitched giggle and unkempt curls, she projected an image of warmth and familiarity. Everyone knew Wendy Wasserstein. Or thought they did. Born on October 18, 1950, in Brooklyn, New York, to Polish Jewish immigrant parents, Wendy was the youngest of Lola and Morris Wasserstein's five children. Lola had big dreams for her children. They didn't disappoint: Sandra, Wendy's glamorous sister, became a high- ranking corporate executive at a time when Fortune 500 companies were an impenetrable boys club. Their brother Bruce became a billionaire superstar of the investment banking world. Yet behind the family's remarkable success was a fiercely guarded world of private tragedies. Wendy perfected the family art of secrecy while cultivating a densely populated inner circle. Her friends included theater elite such as playwright Christopher Durang, Lincoln Center Artistic Director André Bishop, former New York Times theater critic Frank Rich, and countless others. And still almost no one knew that Wendy was pregnant when, at age forty-eight, she was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital to deliver Lucy Jane three months premature. The paternity of her daughter remains a mystery. At the time of Wendy's tragically early death less than six years later, very few were aware that she was gravely ill. The cherished confidante to so many, Wendy privately endured her greatest heartbreaks alone. In Wendy and the Lost Boys, Salamon assembles the fractured pieces, revealing Wendy in full. Though she lived an uncommon life, she spoke to a generation of women during an era of vast change. Revisiting Wendy's works-The Heidi Chronicles and others-we see Wendy in the free space of the theater, where her many selves all found voice. Here Wendy spoke in the most intimate of terms about everything that matters most: family and love, dreams and devastation. And that is the Wendy of Neverland, the Wendy who will never grow old.
