Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of the Apostle St. John Who has not experienced during his life some of those blessed hours wherein one feels under the influence and as if under the charm ofa being who overrules and of a thought which subjugates? I was under the charm iof St. John; and it was in the light of that spot and of that day that the celestial physiognomy of the Apostle beamed upon me for the first time. I imagined that I saw and felt him, and, wishing likewise to hear him, I took his Gospel and I entered the cloister of St. John Lateran, in order silently to converse with him. Download or read book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint written by Ernest Edward Kellett and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book Saint John and the Close of the Apostolic Age Classic Reprint

Download or read book Saint John and the Close of the Apostolic Age Classic Reprint written by Abbe Constant Fouard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Saint John and the Close of the Apostolic Age Far more fitting would it be to devote all our attention to this winning aspect of his personality, if thereby we might but catch new glimpses of those heavenly features which had enravished his soul. But the never-ending attacks wherewith his works are assailed force us to forego this more agreeable plan and first seek a solid foundation for the objective matter of our present study: those inspired writings wherein he has revealed the Saviour to us in a new and striking light. Assuredly I have no intention of dis cussing such unsavory questions, much ventilated nowadays, as, for instance, Whether Jesus Himself believed that He was God, ' or again, Just when did He become aware of His Messianic Mission. Aside from the fact that the Mystery of the Incarnation must ever remain impenetrable to our puny intellects, inquiries so temerarious as these not to term them assaults upon the divine personality of the Christ would surely shock the pious instincts of my readers. This, however, is not the case with the proofs which go to establish the authenticity of the Apostolic documents. These we shall examine, beginning with those which have reference to the Fourth Gospel; then we shall pass on to the three Epistles of Saint John styled catholic finally, we shall see what claims his Apocalypse has to be treated as equally authentic. Book Saint John s Abbey Church

Download or read book Saint John s Abbey Church written by Victoria M. Young and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1950s the brethren at the Benedictine Abbey of Saint John the Baptist in Collegeville, Minnesota—the largest Benedictine abbey in the world—decided to expand their campus, including building a new church. From a who’s who of architectural stars—such as Walter Gropius, Richard Neutra, Pietro Belluschi, Barry Byrne, and Eero Saarinen—the Benedictines chose a former member of the Bauhaus, Marcel Breuer. In collaboration with the monks, this untested religious designer produced a work of modern sculptural concrete architecture that reenvisioned what a church could be and set a worldwide standard for midcentury religious design. Saint John’s Abbey Church documents the dialogue of the design process, as Breuer instructed the monks about architecture and they in turn guided him and his associates in the construction of a sacred space in the crucial years of liturgical reform. A reading of letters, drawings, and other archival materials shows how these conversations gave shape to design elements from the church’s floor plan to the liturgical furnishings, art, and incomparable stained glass installed within it. The book offers a rare detailed view of how a patron and architect work together in a successful building campaign—one that, in this case, lasted for two decades and resulted in designs for twelve buildings, ten of which were completed. The post–World War II years were critical in the development of religious and architectural experiences in the United States—experiences that came together in the construction of Saint John’s Abbey and University Church and that find their full expression in Victoria M. Young’s account of the process. Using the liturgy of the mid-twentieth century as a cornerstone for understanding the architecture produced to support it, her book showcases the importance of modernism in the design of sacred space, and of Marcel Breuer’s role in setting the standard.

Book Saint John Chrysostom His Life and Times

Download or read book Saint John Chrysostom His Life and Times written by W. R. W. Stephens and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Saint John Chrysostom, His Life and Times: A Sketch of the Church and the Empire in the Fourth Century The considerations which induced me to undertake this monograph are mentioned in the introductory chapter. How far the design there indicated has been satisfactorily fulfilled, it is for others to decide. I am of course conscious of defects, for every workman's ideal aim should be higher than what he can actually accomplish. The work has incurred a certain risk from having been once or twice suspended for a considerable period; but I have always returned to it with increased interest and pleasure, nor can I charge myself with having wittingly bestowed less pains on one part than another. I have endeavoured to make it a trustworthy narrative by drawing from the most original sources to which I could gain access; and where, as in those portions which touch on secular history, the lead of general historians, such as Gibbon or De Broglie, has been followed, I have, as far as possible, consulted the authorities to which they refer. To modern authors from whom I have derived valuable assistance for special parts of the work, such as M. Amedee Thierry and Dr. Foerster, my obligations are acknowledged in their proper place. Book The Holy Gospel According to Saint John Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Holy Gospel According to Saint John Classic Reprint written by John Mcintyre and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Holy Gospel According to Saint John T. Augustine said of St. John's Gospel, They are deep words that are spoken by him, not random words, nor such as may be easily understood. To speak clearly on such deep doctrine, especially to the young and with brevity, is no easy task; and even when one's best has been done, great attention is required on the part of the reader. If, when that attention has been given, much of what is here written still remains obscure, I will not join with the Saint in saying, He that is not able to receive it, let him not charge it on me, but on his own dulness, but I do join with the Saint in saying, If any one may not have understood because I have not declared it as I ought to have declared it, let him excuse the weakness of man. To keep the volume within reasonable limits I have omitted all formal mention of many disputed points. For information on such I must refer the reader to fuller com mentaries. Those most used in the present work were the commentaries of Knabenbauer and Meyer. The chief sources of the Introduction were Kaulen's Einlez'tzmg, Cornely's I ntroductio, Batiffol's Six Leeons, the 'intro ductions' of Salmon and Davidson. The grammatical hints will be made clear by a reference to Beelen's Grammatz'ca Greecitatis Novi Testamenti and to Burton's N ew Testament Moods and Tenses. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Epistles of St. John An exposition of St. John's Epistles by the present writer was announced, as one of a series of such expositions, in 1900. This was to have been a revision of lectures actually delivered in Westminster Abbey, but it was never accomplished. And now that I am taking advantage of some recovered leisure to publish the intended exposition, I have not gone back upon the reports of former lectures. The present exposition is entirely new. Both in the introduction and in the exposition itself I have had in view especially the ordinary man and woman who lack the equipment and knowledge of a scholar, and I have tried to take no knowledge for granted that an ordinary education does not supply. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pupils of St. John the Divine Looking back on the history of the Evangelist, we see how peculiar was his own zpreparation for his office in the Church. Youngest of all the Twelve, yet one of the first to become a follower of our Lord, he was especially distinguished by His personal love, and admitted, together with his own elder brother James, and with Simon Peter, to the sight of those deeper and greater manifestations of Divinity from which the others were excluded. Yet all this time it was the youthful qualities of love and zeal that chiefly marked his conduct throughout the Gospel history; he did not stand forth and ask or answer questions, or enter into arguments on the new sub jects then revealed, as did Peter, Thomas, Philip, and Jude; but he followed, he listened, and, like the Virgin Mother, laid up these things in his heart - above all, those deepest and most spiritual lessons that at the moment of their utterance passed over the heads of their hearers.
