She also defines his work with the Confederacy and his fact-finding trips to Mexico after the War Between the States seeking the possibility of the colonization of "A New Virginia." At last the family is united in Virginia when Matthew Fontaine Maury accepted a teaching post at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington.
