Book excerpt: It's said that in America every 11 minutes, another life is lost to an opioid overdose. But not everybody dies. Living with the addiction is harder. This epidemic affects old and young, rich and poor. It stretches across genders, races and state lines, both the religious and the agnostics. Can you believe it? Ask Chekesha 'Kay' Ellis, an amazing young girl who sang in the church choir growing up, but found herself giving birth to a son in the back of an ambulance. Growing up in New Jersey, Kay Ellis was living well: a top-notch new job, the most expensive clothes, and being a model came with many friends and an amazing social calendar. But at 24, she had an accident and started using opioids for pain. What began as treatment became an unleashed pimp and prostitute relationship within herself with this new drug. This was the start of the addiction. The monster within, now known as substance abuse disorder. In this prequel to her forthcoming unapologetic memoir, Chekesha 'Kay' Ellis gives us a glimpse into the trappings of opioids. She opens up about her background and early life in church. She shares about getting into modeling, being beautiful and staying beautiful and how in a moment your life can change - for the worst. She was deaf and couldn't hear the cries of her new baby. Could the incentives provided to doctors by pharmaceutical companies have led to the opioid crisis we see today? How did a former model become a pill hustler and junky, simultaneously? Is it possible to come back from a dead place and really live? You've got to read this first installment from Chekesha 'Kay' Ellis - the woman, the model, the disc jockey, the survivor. This short read introduces you to the epidemic from the inside. It's just enough to whet your appetite for her full expose, coming soon. A Life of Kayos: My Opioid Journey through Hell, Hope and Healing is mesmerizing, revealing and necessary.

Book excerpt: It's said that every 11 minutes another life in America is lost to an opioid overdose. But not everybody dies. Living with addiction can be harder. What's now an epidemic of pain pills and controlled substances affects old and young, rich and poor. It stretches across genders, races, state lines, and religions. Growing up in PA, Kay was a fashion model, living well with a top-notch new job, the most expensive clothes, many friends, and an amazing social calendar. But at 27 she had an accident and started using prescription opioids for pain without being educated of the risks. What began as treatment became a decade of deception and disaster as she joined the millions of casualties in the opioid epidemic. Her fall was the start of addiction, the monster within, and substance use disorder. Her determination was the start of opioid recovery, the will within, now her desire to serve her community and bring hope to those personally struggling or loving someone struggling with addiction and opioid abuse. Lorcet 10/650 contained hydrocodone (an opioid pain reliever) and acetaminophen (an analgesic pain reliever like Tylenol) that blocked pain receptors in the brain and became more widely prescribed by doctors beginning in the 1990s, before information was widely available about its risks and side effects. Could the incentives provided to doctors by pharmaceutical companies have led to the opioid crisis we see today? How did a hard-working, compassionate, licensed therapeutic support staff become a pill hustler addicted to prescription pain killers? Is it possible to come back from a dead place and really live? You've got to read this brief memoir from Kay Ellis- the woman, the model, the disc jockey, the survivor. This short read personally introduces you to the epidemic from the inside, to just how easily a person can slip from upstanding citizen to desperate prescription drug abuser. He then guides us through the philosophical and theological maze he refers to as a puzzle. One piece of the puzzle may trigger us to question how our bodily form came into existence. Everywhere we look, from the color of our eyes to the people in our lives, we see questions, and we are propelled by our inner longing to seek satisfying answers. The Chain reveals startling revelations about age-old reflections. It takes its readers on the journey of their lives-and beyond Life challenges inspired author Samir Edward Morcos to become intensely interested in some tough topics, like guilt, evil, and truth. His drive to unravel the uncertainty of the universe, and to share what he has learned, impelled him to write The Chain. Book Paul Newman

Download or read book Paul Newman written by Shawn Levy and published by Crown. This book was released on 2010-05-04 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “[This] absorbing, affectionate portrait manages to bring [Newman] back to us. . . . Paul Newman leaves readers with a surprisingly cheering message. If the rest of us can’t aspire to having Newman’s life, we can at least take inspiration from the way he lived his.”—The Washington Post “A graceful tribute to a one-of-a-kind man.”—The Seattle Times “Newman’s life was never dull, and Levy re-creates it in vivid detail.”—Parade Paul Newman, the Oscar-winning actor with the legendary blue eyes, achieved superstar status by playing charismatic renegades, broken heroes, and winsome antiheroes in such revered films as The Hustler, Cool Hand Luke, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Verdict, The Color of Money, and Nobody’s Fool. But Newman was also an oddity in Hollywood: the rare box-office titan who cared about the craft of acting, the sexy leading man known for the staying power of his marriage, and the humble celebrity who made philanthropy his calling card long before it was cool. Unlike his father, a successful entrepreneur, Newman bypassed the family sporting goods business to pursue an acting career. After struggling as a theater and television actor, Newman landed the lead role of boxer Rocky Graziano in Somebody Up There Likes Me when, in a tragic twist of fate, James Dean was killed in a car accident. Part of the original Actors Studio generation, Newman demanded a high level of rigor and clarity from every project. The artistic battles that nearly derailed his early movie career would pay off handsomely at the box office and earn him critical acclaim. He applied that tenacity to every endeavor both on and off the set. The outspoken Newman used his celebrity to call attention to political causes dear to his heart, including civil rights and nuclear proliferation. Taking up auto racing in midlife, Newman became the oldest driver to ever win a major professional auto race. A food enthusiast who would dress his own salads in restaurants, he launched the Newman’s Own brand dedicated to fresh ingredients, a nonprofit juggernaut that has generated more than $250 million for charity. In Paul Newman: A Life, Shawn Levy gives readers the ultimate behind-the-scenes examination of the actor’s life, from his merry pranks on the set to his lasting romance with Joanne Woodward to the devastating impact of his son’s death from a drug overdose. This expansive biography is a portrait of an extraordinarily gifted man who gave back as much as he got out of life—and just happened to be one of the most celebrated movie stars of the twentieth century.
