Download or read book A License to Heal A License to Steal written by Robert Fineman and published by Robert M. Fineman, MD, PhD. This book was released on 2009-08-31 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physicians play a very important role in the lives of individuals, families, and communities. Their role involves medical, ethical, psychological, social, legal, financial, and other attributes. Sooner or later each of us, a family member, a friend, or someone we know will interact with a physician. The interactions of physicians with patients and their families, other physicians and allied healthcare providers, and others vary considerably; that is, from outstanding to awful. There are many reasons for this including doctorhood, which I define as the quality or character of a doctor(s). For the most part, understanding the attributes of doctorhood, the medical profession, health care, and health care reform in the United States are what this book is about.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set in a world of iron lungs, the Great Depression, and a World War, Courage to Heal is based on the true story of a young surgeon who, along with the twentieth century's boldest industrialist, changed the face of American medicine forever. History is brought to vivid life in this novel of an intransigent physician, his fight to provide health care to all, and his undying love for a beautiful nurse who marries the man determined to defeat him. At the height of the Great Depression, Doctor Sidney Garfield saw the thousands of men involved in building the Los Angeles Aqueduct as an opportunity to provide quality affordable health care for workers. He built Contractors General Hospital: a 12-bed hospital in the middle of the Mojave Desert, six miles from the tiny town of Desert Center, California, and began treating sick and injured workers. With the start of WWII, the need for health care¿for shipworkers¿was even greater. Working with industrialist Henry Kaiser, Garfield created the first true health care system in the Richmond shipyards, then opened a hospital in Oakland, still the headquarters of what is now Kaiser Permanente. When WWII was over, the doctor¿s private war began, when the AMA tried to shut down Kaiser (calling it ¿socialist¿) and take away his medical license. Through it all, Garfield persisted in his vision of affordable health care. Kaiser Permanente is the largest HMO in the U.S., serving over 8 million people.ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Paul Bernstein, MD, is a practicing Head and Neck Surgeon, Chair of the Head and Neck Division of the American Cancer Society, and founder of the Kaiser Permanente Historical Society. His novels have won awards at the San Diego Book Awards and the Asilomar Writers¿ Conference. He has appeared as a medical expert on Good Morning America, San Diego television, and was featured on the cover of MD Magazine.

Book excerpt: An emergency room physician recalls his eventful career in this insightful, occasionally harrowing, memoir. Despite the subtitle, debut author Bentley's reminiscences are hardly random. They have been selected to succinctly or dramatically convey the progression of a decades-long career. Leaving out personal details unless relevant to his anecdotes, Bentley emerges as a compassionate doctor who sympathizes with his patients, including those who have allowed their bodies to fall apart. He is also empathetic; for example, he rails against oncologists offering "the promise of 'more life'" without mentioning the horrible side effects that a patient might endure from a last-resort cancer treatment. Bentley, however, acknowledges that many ER admissions and treatments reflect the pressure from health care corporations to keep their hospitals as busy as possible-whether treatment or even, in some cases, admissions are justified. Sometimes, questionable admissions, like that of a patient who didn't have any discernible blood pressure because he was dead, illustrate incompetence rather than corporate greed. But Bentley also encountered many "patients" seeking treatment for fictitious problems solely to obtain a particular painkiller or to avoid a court date or some other selfish motive, which only added to the burdens of a largely broken health care system. The horrors documented here include a lab tech discarding blood samples and returning to the magazine he was reading; the "wallet biopsies," in which insurance policies dictate treatment; and malpractice suits filed almost automatically when ER patients die.

Book excerpt: The Institute of Medicine study Crossing the Quality Chasm (2001) recommended that an interdisciplinary summit be held to further reform of health professions education in order to enhance quality and patient safety. Health Professions Education: A Bridge to Quality is the follow up to that summit, held in June 2002, where 150 participants across disciplines and occupations developed ideas about how to integrate a core set of competencies into health professions education. These core competencies include patient-centered care, interdisciplinary teams, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and informatics. This book recommends a mix of approaches to health education improvement, including those related to oversight processes, the training environment, research, public reporting, and leadership. Educators, administrators, and health professionals can use this book to help achieve an approach to education that better prepares clinicians to meet both the needs of patients and the requirements of a changing health care system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Helping Soldiers Heal tells the story of the US Army's transformation from a disparate collection of poorly standardized, largely disconnected clinics into one of the nation's leading mental health care systems. It is a step-by-step guidebook for military and civilian health care systems alike. Jayakanth Srinivasan and Christopher Ivany provide a unique insider-outsider perspective as key participants in the process, sharing how they confronted the challenges firsthand and helped craft and guide the unfolding change. The Army's system was being overwhelmed with mental health problems among soldiers and their family members, impeding combat readiness. The key to the transformation was to apply the tenets of "learning" health care systems. Building a learning health care system is hard; building a learning mental health care system is even harder. As Helping Soldiers Heal recounts, the Army overcame the barriers to success, and its experience is full of lessons for any health care system seeking to transform.

Book Animals and the Shaping of Modern Medicine

Download or read book Animals and the Shaping of Modern Medicine written by Abigail Woods and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-12-29 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This book breaks new ground by situating animals and their diseases at the very heart of modern medicine. In demonstrating their historical significance as subjects and shapers of medicine, it offers important insights into past animal lives, and reveals that what we think of as ‘human’ medicine was in fact deeply zoological. Each chapter analyses an important episode in which animals changed and were changed by medicine. Ranging across the animal inhabitants of Britain’s zoos, sick sheep on Scottish farms, unproductive livestock in developing countries, and the tapeworms of California and Beirut, they illuminate the multi-species dimensions of modern medicine and its rich historical connections with biology, zoology, agriculture and veterinary medicine. The modern movement for One Health – whose history is also analyzed – is therefore revealed as just the latest attempt to improve health by working across species and disciplines. This book will appeal to historians of animals, science and medicine, to those involved in the promotion and practice of One Health today.

Book The Complete Guide to Male Fertility Preservation

Download or read book The Complete Guide to Male Fertility Preservation written by Ahmad Majzoub and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive, multidisciplinary guide provides an up-to-date presentation of fertility preservation techniques with male cancer patients and other challenging conditions. Divided into four thematic sections, part one provides an overview of the pathophysiologic processes interrelating cancer and its treatment with infertility and discusses different methods of sperm preservation and fertility outcomes in cancer patients. Part two then explores male fertility preservation in various non-cancerous conditions, such as immunosuppressed, hypogonadal and transgender patients. The fundamental principles of cryobiology and sperm optimization are covered in part three, which also offers essential building blocks for scientists to develop a sperm banking service and implement high standards of practice. The final section describes the current practices of male fertility preservation along with its psychological impact on patients, and extends beyond to future innovative methods—tissue preservation, xenografting and artificial gametes—being researched and implemented in this field. Fertility preservation among cancer patients and survivors is an evolving practice, which involves focused research and timely collaboration of professionals from related fields. The Complete Guide to Male Fertility Preservation is unique and original in its design and will appeal to a larger audience of andrologists, reproductive endocrinologists, urologists, embryologists, and all other clinicians practicing reproductive medicine and oncology.
