Book The Enlightened Joseph Priestley

Download or read book The Enlightened Joseph Priestley written by Robert E. Schofield and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-10-29 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Enlightened Joseph Priestley Robert Schofield completes his two-volume biography of one of the great figures of the English Enlightenment. The first volume, published in 1997, covered the first forty years of Joseph Priestley’s life in England. In this second volume, Schofield surveys the mature years of Priestley, including the achievements that were to make him famous—the discovery of oxygen, the defenses of Unitarianism, and the political liberalism that characterized his later life. He also recounts Priestley’s flight to Pennsylvania in 1794 and the final years of his life spent along the Susquehanna in Northumberland. Together, the two volumes will stand as the standard biography of Priestley for years to come. Joseph Priestley (1733–1804), a contemporary and friend of Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson, exceeded even these polymaths in the breadth of his curiosity and learning. Yet Priestley is often portrayed in negative terms, as a restless intellect, incapable of confining himself to any single task, without force or originality, and marked by hasty and superficial thought. In The Enlightened Joseph Priestley, he emerges as a man who was more than a lucky empiricist in science, more than a naive political liberal, more than an exhaustive compiler of superficial evidence in militant support of Unitarianism. In fact, he was learned in an extraordinary variety of subjects, from grammar, education, aesthetics, metaphysics, politics, and theology to natural philosophy. Priestley was, in fact, a man of the Enlightenment.

Book Coleridge and Scepticism

Download or read book Coleridge and Scepticism written by Ben Brice and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 2007-10-18 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coleridge tended to view objects in the natural world as if they were capable of articulating truths about his own poetic psyche. He also regarded such objects as if they were capable of illustrating and concretely embodying truths about a transcendent spiritual realm. After 1805, he posited a series of analogical 'likenesses' connecting the rational principles that inform human cognition with the rational principles that he believed informed the teleological structure of the natural world. Human reason and the principle of rationality realised objectively in Nature were both regarded as finite effects of God's seminal Word. Although Coleridge intuitively felt that nature had been constructed as a 'mirror' of the human mind, and that both mind and nature were 'mirrors' of a transcendent spiritual realm, he never found an explanation of such experiences that was fully immune to his own sceptical doubts. Coleridge and Scepticism examines the nature of these sceptical doubts, as well as offering a new explanatory account of why Coleridge was unable to affirm his religious intuitions. Ben Brice situates his work within two important intellectual traditions. The first, a tradition of epistemological 'piety' or 'modesty', informs the work of key precursors such as Kant, Hume, Locke, Boyle, and Calvin, and relates to Protestant critiques of natural reason. The second, a tradition of theological voluntarism, emphasises the omnipotence and transcendence of God, as well as the arbitrary relationship subsisting between God and the created world. Brice argues that Coleridge's detailed familiarity with both of these interrelated intellectual traditions, ultimately served to undermine his confidence in his ability to read the symbolic language of God in nature.

Book excerpt: This book surveys the ways analytic theologians have sought to understand the Christian doctrine of the Trinity. Applying the tools of recent analytic metaphysics, logic, and epistemology, they seek to provide a self-consistent and orthodox way to understand the trinitarian claims of catholic traditions. This issue goes to the heart of Christian belief, and is central to theological disagreements between Christians, Jews, and Muslims.Supplementary discussions survey the history of Trinity theories, unitarian Christian theologies, and Judaic and Islamic objections to Trinity theories. There is an extensive bibliography. This book is an authorized reprint of the article "Trinity" and its supplementary documents, from the online Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. http://plato.stanford.edu/
