Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Letter to the Right Honourable William Wickham Chief Secretary to His Excellency the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, and One of His Majesty's Most Honourable Privy Council, &C., &C., On the Subject of Mr. Scully's Advice to His Catholic Brethren IF we are to efiimate the'merit of a work, by its tendency to promote the end for which it was defigned, and that the object of Mr. Scully was to animate the loyalty of his fellow fub jeas, I doubt whether Ihave ever met a worfe production, than that which he has lately of fered to the public. Indeed, if his wifh had been to damp that ardour which he pretended to excite, then his pages might be well calcu lated to attain their purpofes and by becom ing mifchievous, would ecafe to be contemp tible. To deny them this latter praife, would be a degree of candour, to which, if we are to fearch his paragraphs for his principles, a cenforious critic might alledge that he had no title. But I am content to wave all en quiry as to motive, and adopting the hypo thefis, that this pamphlet was Well intended, {hall examine whether thofe intentions have been carried happily into effect. In the mean time, let it not be fuppofed that I detract from the character, public or private, of Mr. Scully. I have never heard any thing that could war B, 2 rant[4. Book Serving Victoria

Download or read book Serving Victoria written by Kate Hubbard and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2013-04-30 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During her sixty-three-year reign, Queen Victoria gathered around herself a household dedicated to her service. For some, royal employment was the defining experience of their lives; for others it came as an unwelcome duty or as a prelude to greater things. Serving Victoria follows the lives of six members of her household, from the governess to the royal children, from her maid of honor to her chaplain and her personal physician. Drawing on their letters and diaries—many hitherto unpublished—Serving Victoria offers a unique insight into the Victorian court, with all its frustrations and absurdities, as well as the Queen herself, sitting squarely at its center. Seen through the eyes of her household as she traveled among Windsor, Osborne, and Balmoral, and to the French and Belgian courts, Victoria emerges as more vulnerable, more emotional, more selfish, more comical, than the austere figure depicted in her famous portraits. We see a woman who was prone to fits of giggles, who wept easily and often, who gobbled her food and shrank from confrontation but insisted on controlling the lives of those around her. We witness her extraordinary and debilitating grief at the death of her husband, Albert, and her sympathy toward the tragedies that afflicted her household. Witty, astute, and moving, Serving Victoria is a perfect foil to the pomp and circumstance—and prudery and conservatism—associated with Victoria's reign, and gives an unforgettable glimpse of what it meant to serve the Queen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vol. 1: In the essays presented in this volume, Bentham lays down the theoretical principles from which he develops his proposals for reform of the English poor laws in response to the perceived crisis in poor relief in the mid-1790s. In "Essays on the Subject of the Poor Laws", Bentham seeks to justify the principles on which entitlement to relief should be grounded, while in "Pauper Systems Compared", he presents a sustained comparison between home relief and institutional relief. The polemical "Observations on the Poor Bill" is a lively critique of the Bill introduced into the House of Commons by William Pitt in 1796. The ideas advanced here by Bentham were a significant influence on Edwin Chadwick, and through his mediation, on the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834. The essays are based almost entirely on manuscript sources

Book excerpt: The classic social history of the Great English Agricultural Uprising of 1830, from one of the greatest historians of our age. For generation upon generation, the English farm laborer lived in poverty and degradation. With the onset of the Industrial Revolution, however, new forces came into play—and when capitalism swept from the cities into the countryside, tensions reached the breaking point. From 1830 on, a series of revolts, known as the “Swing,” shook England to its core. Here is the background of that upheaval, from its rise to its fall, and the people who tried to change their world. A masterpiece of British history.
