Download or read book Imagining the Middle Class written by Dror Wahrman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-07-13 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why and how did the British people come to see themselves as living in a society centred around a middle class? The answer provided by Professor Wahrman challenges most prevalent historical narratives: the key to understanding changes in conceptualisations of society, the author argues, lies not in underlying transformations of social structure - in this case industrialisation, which supposedly created and empowered the middle class - but rather in changing political configurations. Firmly grounded in a close reading of an extensive array of sources, and supported by comparative perspectives on France and America, the book offers a nuanced model for the interplay between social reality, politics, and the languages of class.
Download or read book A Brilliant Little Operation written by Paddy Ashdown and published by Aurum. This book was released on 2013-05-02 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complete story of the remarkable canoe raid on German ships in Bordeaux Harbour – by the man who himself served in the Special Boat Squadron. In 1942, before El Alamein turned the tide of war, the German merchant fleet was re-supplying its war machine with impunity. So Operation Frankton, a daring and secret raid, was launched by Mountbatten’s Combined Operations and led by the enigmatic ‘Blondie’ Hasler – to paddle ‘Cockleshell’ canoes right into Bordeaux harbour and sink the ships at anchor. It was a desperately hazardous mission from the start – dropped by submarine to canoe some hundred miles up the Gironde into the heart of Vichy France, surviving terrifying tidal races, only to face the biggest challenge of all: escaping across the Pyrenees. Fewer than half the men made it to Bordeaux; only four laid their mines; just two got back alive. But the most damage was done to the Germans’ sense of impregnability. Paddy Ashdown, himself a member of the Royal Marines’ elite Special Boat Squadron formed as a consequence of Frankton, has always been fascinated by this classic story of bravery and ingenuity - as a young man even meeting his hero Hasler once. Now, after researching previously unseen archives and tracing surviving witnesses, he has written the definitive account of the raid. The real truth, he discovers – a deplorable tale of Whitehall rivalry and breakdowns in communication – serves only to make the achievements of the ‘Cockleshell’ heroes all the more heroic.
Download or read book The Duke Illustrated Edition written by Philip Guedalla and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 927 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes over 100 maps of the actions, engagements and battles of the entire Peninsular War. “Philip Guedalla wrote “The Duke” in 1931, when the exploits of the First Duke of Wellington were still generally known to his audience....In a brisk but witty narrative, Guedalla retraces the life and long career of Arthur Wesley, later Duke of Wellington. Wesley’s unpromising youth provides no foreshadowing of his future greatness...Guedalla rescues Wellington’s highly successful apprenticeship in arms in India from historical obscurity; only Jac Weller has covered that period better. Wellington’s successes in the Peninsular War and at Waterloo have been well-documented and Guedalla does not place undue emphasis on this portion of his career. Guedalla does carry the narrative forward into Wellington’s long career in government and in politics after Waterloo, where, despite long and faithful public service, he might fairly be said to have outlived his times. Wellington spent a military lifetime defeating the more rabid effects of the French Revolution; as a politician, he found himself often out of synch with the much more peaceful English Revolution that followed. It is Guedalla’s gift as an historian to place Wellington in the context of his times and especially of his social class as a member of the Anglo-Irish nobility. His extensive research into Wellington’s correspondence has produced a wealth of quotes that help provide a flavor of the man. Guedalla avoids the temptation to speculate; Wellington’s worlds and actions are allowed to speak for him. We come away with a sense of Wellington as a strict, disciplined, methodical, and confident military officer endowed with both an enormous amount of common sense about people and politics and with distinct pride and ambition about his own career. This book is highly recommended to students of the life of the Duke of Wellington.-D. S. Thurlow.

Download or read book British Politics on the Eve of Reform written by Peter Jupp and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on an extensive range of sources, this impressive book analyses the principal institutions and features of British politics on the eve of reform: the monarchy, the prime ministership, the cabinet, the departments of State, parliamentary legislation, investigation, debate and parties, and the relationship between Parliament, the media, public opinion and popular politics. Designed to provide an accessible guide to how British politics was conducted in the early nineteenth century, this book leads to two main conclusions about pre-Reform politics: the unpredictability and openness of parliamentary affairs, and the centrality of Parliament to the politics of all social classes.
