Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Letter to American Workingmen: From the Socialist Soviet Republic of Russia Four years of imperialistic slaughter have left their trace. Irrefutably and clearly events have shown to the people that both imperialistic groups, the English as well as the German, have been playing false. The four years of war have shown in their effects the great law of capitalism in all wars; that he who 'is richest and mightiest profits the most, takes the great est share of the spoils while he who is weakest is exploited, martyred, oppressed and outraged to the utmost. In the number of its colonial possessions, English imperial ism has always been more powerful than any of the other countries. England has lost not a span of its acquired land. On the other hand it has acquired control of all German colonies in Africa, has occupied Mesopotamia and Palestine. This book was released on 2022-08-15 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 'A Letter to American Workingmen, from the Socialist Soviet Republic of Russia,' Vladimir Il'ich Lenin reaches across national boundaries to communicate directly with the proletariat of the United States. Within this text, Lenin employs a direct, stirring prose style to appeal to the sense of solidarity among workers worldwide, and provides an exposition on the principles and practical aims of the Bolshevik revolution. The letter reads both as a persuasive political document and a significant historical artifact, standing in its literary context as a bridge between revolutionary fervor and geopolitical discourse. It offers readers a vivid glimpse into the early ideological exchanges that would shape the global narrative of the 20th century. Lenin, a seminal figure in the establishment of the first socialist state, brings to this composition a wealth of political experience and a fiery ideological passion. His tenure as a leader during turbulent times, his role as a revolutionary theorist, and his unwavering belief in Marxist doctrine undoubtedly shape the content and cadence of the letter. A direct product of the early Soviet zeitgeist, it reflects both the personal convictions of Lenin and the collective aspirations of the Bolsheviks, aimed at fostering working-class unity against oppressive capitalist structures. This edition, brought to readers by DigiCat Publishing, is thus recommended for anyone interested in the historical progression of socialist thought, the evolution of Soviet-American relations, or the literary methods used in political persuasion. Scholars and enthusiasts of political philosophy, history, and revolutionary literature will find Lenin's address a compelling call to consciousness and action, one deserving recognition not only for its content but also for the place it occupies in the pantheon of world literature.

Book Democracy s Prisoner

Download or read book Democracy s Prisoner written by Ernest Freeberg and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1920, socialist leader Eugene V. Debs ran for president while serving a ten-year jail term for speaking against America’s role in World War I. Though many called Debs a traitor, others praised him as a prisoner of conscience, a martyr to the cause of free speech. Nearly a million Americans agreed, voting for a man whom the government had branded an enemy to his country. In a beautifully crafted narrative, Ernest Freeberg shows that the campaign to send Debs from an Atlanta jailhouse to the White House was part of a wider national debate over the right to free speech in wartime. Debs was one of thousands of Americans arrested for speaking his mind during the war, while government censors were silencing dozens of newspapers and magazines. When peace was restored, however, a nationwide protest was unleashed against the government’s repression, demanding amnesty for Debs and his fellow political prisoners. Led by a coalition of the country’s most important intellectuals, writers, and labor leaders, this protest not only liberated Debs, but also launched the American Civil Liberties Union and changed the course of free speech in wartime. The Debs case illuminates our own struggle to define the boundaries of permissible dissent as we continue to balance the right of free speech with the demands of national security. In this memorable story of democracy on trial, Freeberg excavates an extraordinary episode in the history of one of America’s most prized ideals.
