Book A Letter to Thomas Clarkson Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Letter to Thomas Clarkson Classic Reprint written by James Cropper and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Letter to Thomas Clarkson In judging of this scheme we ought never to lose sight of two facts with respect to the enslaved Africans in the United States, in which the enormities of that free country have exceeded those of any other. The first is, that slaves are regularly bred for sale. The second, that in many of the States the laws affecting free blacks are of so violently persecuting a character as to compel those who obtain their liberty to leave those States. From the former of these causes, instances must: often occur (from the state of morals in slave countries) of fathers selling their own children 1! From the latter has originated the Colonization Society; it arose out of these prejudices against colour, and is a direct attempt to extend the same principle to transportation, Why are slave-holders so anxious to send away free people of colour? Because their slave institutions would be endangered by the competition of respectable free black labourers; and they dread still more their education and advancement in science. If they were desirous to serve the free blacks they would instruct them at home, (not a flaw of them, but every one that they send, ) and not send them in ignorance to a barbarous country. Grimke If every Slave has a right to freedom, then surely the man who withholds that right from him to-day is a man-stealer, though he may not be the first person who has robbed him of it. Hence we find that Wes ley says - J Men-buyers are exactly on a level with men-stealers.' And again Much less is it possible that any child of man should ever be born a slave.' Hear also Jonathan Edwards - 4 To hold a man in a state of slavery, is to be every day guilty of robbing him of his liberty, or of man-stealing.' This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Letter to Lord Brougham on the Subject of American Slavery My Lord, Nothing but duties of an imperative character could have prevented the writing of this letter at an earlier period. I make no apology for addressing it to your Lordship, feeling well convinced that the interest you take in the subject to which it relates, is such, as to render that wholly unnecessary. It is not, my Lord, in defence of Slavery that I undertake to address your Lordship. I bless God that this is an evil with which I have had nothing to do, except to endeavour, by humble means, to mitigate its pressure, and to hasten its peaceful termination. But it is with the view of defending my country, against some of the misrepresentations which have been recently heaped upon it; as well as giving to the British public some information on this subject which, I apprehend, they have not possessed. It happened to me, my Lord, to be called by duty to visit London during the late season of the Anniversaries of those Religious and Benevolent Societies, which are both the ornament and shield of Great Britain.
